We do live in a weird place in the UK, units wise. We like MPH, Pints, Stones and feet. That said, anything which isn't a pint, I want in litres and millilitres. Anything which isn't height, I want in centimetres and millimetres. Anything which isn't a person's weight, I want in grams and kilograms. Looking at up coming generations, I think stones and feet are on the way out. I don't think MPH and pints are going anywhere though.

[GBC] Cardan Lift
Ankoku replied to torso's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
It has been an interesting one for me. e.g. the GBC machines I like the best, are the ones with the smoothest motions. So this wasn't up there on my priority list to build as at certain points it isn't perfectly smooth. Also, it is so complex, gearing wise, I didn't feel as though I would learn that much from building it. e.g. still going over my head having built it :P That said, it is an amazing thing. I have only heard great things about it, reliability wise, which is the gold standard really with GBC. Also, it uses a lot of mainly Technic parts, which makes it more desirable to build when your collection is mainly Technic. Whenever I do a BrickLink or LEGO purchase, it is nearly always basic bricks, plates and tiles that I am buying for GBC builds. The real winner is having all that gearing on display for all to see. I love that aspect of it. I also love the unique use of the differential gear. -

Metric is the only way... for most thing. There are a few things better in imperial, but not many.

@djm You are a star! Thanks :) And thanks for the insight! -
Only just realised, that the red/blue/yellow ball factory above isn't sitting on the usual grey base plates.

It is the combination of art and engineering! They have always been popular from films to TV ads to displays: You find Rube Goldberg machines everywhere. The thing I like about GBC, is that the balls loop back, so it just keeps on running. Rather than being a one off thing.

Does anyone have a BrickLink friendly parts list for this? -
If you get the GBC bug, you will spend a lot of time thinking as you travel, how to make things more reliable :)

I stand by my previous comment. It is sooo red. One thing of note, which is worth mentioning: The owner of the red one has chosen to use a clutch gear in case of jams. Jams happen with most GBC machines at some point or another. A jam with the Ball Factory will most likely cause a gear to slip and thus desync. So a clutch gear is well worth considering to avoid that. In this case, the gearing down of S motor to clutch gear means the machine is running slower than it really should be.

Found a blue version! This is pretty much an exact copy of the ReBricker version with some heavy duty mods to the dropper.

Have you seen this @Berthil? He does hand cranked versions of various GBCs, including a lot of Akiyuki ones, for kids to play with.- 1,124 replies

Came across this the other day. Ignoring the electronics, I really like the solution he has found to send balls either one route or the other. I think it could be used quite well as a simple timer. Just leave it rotating at the desired speed in a single direction. Thus allowing you to get a ball every X. He is using an old Technic piece for it, but I suspect that this would work fine:- 1,124 replies

Mine just sits on an overly heavy slab of wood at the moment. I love your idea with the 3L Axle pegs. Good work!

It is entirely up to you. Doesn't really make any odds. I have mine sat on the outside, mainly because I am endlessly swapping out the motor and messing about with things.

Yeah, have bought my hockey sticks too, before they become hard to get. I doubt he is going to make much off sales, but it may be enough to cover the time and effort to make the instructions. I think he got someone else to do the instructions for the train stuff, but this time, the instructions seem to be by him. With Blakbird not doing GBC stuff for the most part any more, this is, in many ways a welcome development. It will be interesting to see where TLG is with it all. e.g. they were paying him to do videos not too long ago. There are some people who love the digital design stuff, but I am certainly not one of them. So if I was in his shoes, I would want some sort of motivation to actually make the instructions too.

I have used both. The XL one isn't needed, as the whole thing runs smooth enough to be happy on an L. Speed wise, you basically run the machine at the speed you are happy with. So it doesn't really matter. My comments about speed is more to do with running it very slow and running it normally. Rather than the difference you would see between L and XL.

Well, people can still reverse engineer it. They have the part list and there are plenty of images on the blog.

With the latest train stuff, he provided the instructions for free. I really like this though. It lets you support his work and the price point is great. I also love how you can get the parts list before buying the instructions. It is a nice touch.

This is the white, purple, pink and aqua coloured ball factory I mentioned. You can see it at the 7min mark. As you can see, it is quite heavily modified. I like the extra conveyor at the end to get it back up to GBC standard height. They also rotated the spiral tower to gain the space they needed at the other end.

Remember to take photos of any modifications, issues etc. that you come across, so others can learn from your experience! Also, for other owners of the Ball Factory on here: Post photos of your reliability mods etc.!
