LEGO Technic Rainbowgatti
jwarner replied to kraai's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I have to ask, when you build these do you strategically choose what "random" colors to use or do you just reach into a drawer and use the first part you get? Looking very nice by the way -
Can you explain what you mean by fully plated? Also yeah, red probably would have looked really nice, but deep in my heart I knew I wanted green Classic Space. I'm sure red would look just as nice though

I was initially hesitant to share this model since LEGO discourages sharing ADP entries, but I had to post a video to YouTube for my submission so I may as well share it here as well. Stud.io's renders look better than any photo I could get at the moment, so this is what I have: Rocketship - ADP Submission by jwarner1718, on Flickr The initial idea for this creation was something along the lines of "what if we made, like, a missile, but it was supposed to be flown?" Obviously this has seen quite a bit of refinement but I'm glad it could all come together it time for ADP. The rocketship itself can be removed from the stand and swooshed around quite nicely, and the stand doesn't use any rubber bands or dampers to hold the model in place (the ADP palette doesn't have rubber bands). Rocketship - ADP Submission by jwarner1718, on Flickr The ADP palette also has very strict limits on minifigures, so the submission version gets a simple astronaut. My personal model has a green Classic Space minifig at the helm, and I think he suits it much better. AFOL designer program
jwarner replied to anothergol's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
I for one am really excited about this program! I've got my entry finished on Stud.io but I'm waiting on some parts to test it in person. Can't wait to see what we get from this! -
Signature Technic Quirks?
jwarner replied to jwarner's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
As many as I have Most of mine went into my mobile crane, I think it's the only yellow piece in the whole model. Those accents right -
I haven't been very active here as of lately, I've been working on a fairly large project. But I got to wondering, what are some of your signature quirks when you build? Me personally, I hate the look of bushes; just can't stand them for some reason. I replace as many of them as I can with two half bushes; I know it's not efficient but IMO it looks a lot better What about you guys?

Ah yes, the coveted bottom view. How could I forget? Here it is: Mid-Scale Five-Axle Mobile Crane MOC. by jwarner1718, on Flickr The two inner steered axles use two of these on each side in order to vary the steering angle while still giving me a way to attach a wheel. It works better than I would have first thought. I also have a few renders of the guts: Mid-Scale Mobile Crane MOC by jwarner1718, on Flickr Blue is outriggers Green is steering Nothing special in the chassis, both the steering and the outriggers are run on single axles, and the outriggers just use worm gears to keep from collapsing. Mid-Scale Five-Axle Mobile Crane MOC by jwarner1718, on Flickr Pink is the cable Yellow is the input for boom functions Azure is boom raising (it controls the LA) Lime is boom extension The superstructure was a little more complicated since I needed three functions with really only room for two control knobs. the boom mechanism is based off of this design by Erik Leppen, though I modified it with 3x11x2 panels for aesthetics. the boom extension is also really slow right now since I had few ways to gear it up; most of the gears used can't be swapped out for anything else due to size constraints. However, as soon as I can get my hands on one of the new 20t clutch gears I can bump the ratio from 1:1 to 5:3, which should make it considerably more bearable to work with. Let me know your thoughts!

I've been floating around EB for a while, so it's about time I share my first Technic MOC: Mid-Scale 5-Axle Mobile Crane MOC. by jwarner1718, on Flickr Between wrapping up school and work, I've spent a lot longer on this project than I had anticipated, but I'm very pleased with the result. The finished model is around 950 peices, and with full manual functions: Four-axle steering One stage outriggers Boom extension Boom raising/lowering Superstructure rotation Cable extension/retraction Opening doors With the exception of the doors and superstructure rotation (which are operated simply by hand), all functions are controlled using 12T gears at the rear of the model. I made consolidating the controls a top priority since a lot of manual MOCs have control knobs all over the place. The lower superstructure gear operates both the boom extension and the raising/lowering, and there's a switch on top of the superstructure to switch between the two. Let me know your thoughts!

B model seems underwhelming IMO. Similar to 42056 in that it seems it's just a rebuild of the boom into something different- 1,224 replies

Considering all that's been learned from this, you could almost expect the 2020 supercar reveal to be flawless -

It looks like the build for the shocks is a simple x2 build for both sides, which means that the stops would face different directions when mounted. -

jwarner replied to jantjeuh's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I just recently got into Technic, so the few sets I've gotten are all built. Or rather were... now they're all broken down, waiting to go to college with me -

I'd be down for this. Maybe evaluate entries in part based on recognizability and retention of functionality. Sounds like a fun challenge! -

Technic 2018 Set Discussion
jwarner replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I feel like this might be in part due to the lack of really any useful brown technic parts though. If we had more brown pieces available I think we might occasionally see it used an appropriate way. -
42082 - Rough Terrain Crane
jwarner replied to Ngoc Nguyen's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Oh the irony, a rough terrain crane with no suspension! Unfortunately I've probably got to agree with you, I don't see it fitting in, and if it does there's very little freedom in it- 1,224 replies
