Wild West - Skull Rock silver mine / train tunnel - real life MOC
icemorons replied to Murdoch17's topic in LEGO Train Tech
@Murdoch17 I love what you've done with this! Makes me wish I'd bought one of those silver mine shootout sets when they were being clearanced. Alas, I didn't. The only Lone Ranger set I have is a sealed 79111 Constitution Train Chase, awaiting a rainy day once my Lego layout has a permanent home and can begin construction... You've had some inspiring ideas, and I might need to look on Bricklink/Ebay for a mine or two... Keep up the great work! -
There isn't anything listed for 60203 either. But I'm thinking that 60199 would be a more likely candidate for a station, since it is directly adjacent to the two trains. Let's hope one (or both) of them is train-related!
-
Nicely done!! The initial 60198 prototype lives on in alternate livery! Have you considered adding perhaps a flatcar or gondola holding pallets of Octan fuel/oil drums, and/or a depressed-center flatcar to haul Octan racing team vehicles?
-
@dimaks13 Do you happen to know which set numbers may be attributed to these unknown train-related sets?

Lego Train MOC's. Saddle Tank, Tram, Shunters and more
icemorons replied to LegoDad01's topic in LEGO Train Tech
@LegoDad01 Wow! I really like what you've done with those MOCs! My favorite is the 60052-inspired blue shunter. Keep up the great work! -
I'd concur, it sounds exactly like what's currently in 7895. The only plausible reason I can think of is to update the packaging/graphics, or the insert/instructions printing. 7895 has to be the longest-tenure continually available set on the market. Think about it: It's been around since 2006--that's more than 12 years on the market. It's lasted from the original RC-era trains until now, three complete train-release generations. Although it seems that TLG may have done a mid-run back-of-box graphics refresh at one point (or more), since I have an unopened 7895 box that features 60050, 60051, and 60052 featured on the back panel. I have several 7499 boxes, two with the most recent 6005x, and another one with the 7938/7939, so apparently there have been mid-run refreshes. Maybe TLG decided they wanted to be done with the 4-digit set numbers, since everything else is 5-digit (or longer)?

@Bartosz I've found that sometimes when new, the switch mechanisms are fairly hard to throw. However, with time, I've found them to get a little easier. Keep in mind, it is never going to feel smooth, that's just the design. I don't believe there are any metal parts inside the switching mechanism. The only possible place where there could be, would be a spring that keeps the switch points oriented the way that you've thrown, but allows a train traveling in the opposite direction to continue on, without derailing. Not having opened up one of the mechanisms before, I don't know firsthand whether that spring is metal or plastic. My gut tells me it's plastic, though.

Well, since the rumored new 60205 track pack has straights (8), flex (8), and curves (4), perhaps they've removed curves from the upcoming 60238? What would make the most sense if if they put two pairs of the existing left- and right- switches (points) in the 60238 package. What I'd hope for is a pair of existing left- and right- parallel-track switches, and a pair of new diverging left- and right- switches (like the ones some 3rd parties are 3D printing now). However, given TLG's previous track-record in bundling "things you want" with "things you don't want", into the same package, rather than selling each separately (think road baseplates, or the existing 7499 or 7895 track packs), I'd bet we'll get merely a pair of the existing switches, 8 flex, and a price increase...

Any information about what is different from 7895? Have they changed geometry, or merely the number of tracks included in the set? 7895 had 1-left and 1-right switch track, in addition to 4 standard R-40 curves. edit: Or, is this not a train-track set, but a coaster-track set? (Just thought about this after seeing posts about a rumored new fairground coaster set...)

Wallsend Railroad and Raceway - Picture Heavy!!
icemorons replied to dundarach's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Looking good!! Is that the start of an aerial crane for unloading ships at the port? -
Great rendition! I especially like the details inside the cab. Great work.

Curiously, though, there have been no prior references to any set 60196 existing from any other sources. That number had been skipped between the big new Arctic set 60195 and the 60197 passenger train. Fitting previous train release patterns, it would make sense for 60196 to be a station, but there's been no whiff of any such release this time around. ...Unless you know something?

I found the following on http://jedijacpenguin.com/everythingweknowaboutLEGO2018.htm , but I don't know where that website got its information. The Cargo train piece count is the same as above, but the passenger one differs... Set 8 : 60197 - {? Passenger Train ?} - Includes 707 pcs, 2+ Minifigs? - $TBA / €129.99 or 149.99 Set 9 : 60198 - {? Cargo Train ?} - Includes 1226 pcs, 8 Minifigs? - $TBA / €249.99

Small layout on a door - now completely custom!
icemorons replied to sed6's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Fantastic work! It's really compact, and keeps getting better! Keep it up! -
@Bartosz You might consider swapping the locations for the IR receiver and the battery box. Due to the presence of a pair of grey shutters on the front (long hood) of the locomotive, you'll have five studs' worth of the battery box that can be hidden by shutters if it is moved to the front. The remaining three studs can be occluded by the cab, and perhaps the wiring connections also. The IR receiver will be occluded by the shutter on the rear. It's a suggestion...

icemorons replied to sed6's topic in LEGO Train Tech
@sed6 You've done a great job with this! Lots of action packed into a very small space. It looks like you either modified some of the Lego switches, or bought 3rd party ones, since there are some "turnouts" that don't have the normal switch curve pattern. Can you provide any detail as to what methods you used to customize them, or which 3rd party parts you used? Thanks! -

Built a GE Dash 8-40C MOC I found on LDD Gallery
icemorons replied to judegreer's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Wow, that's enormous! Beautiful job though. When I first started looking at the pictures, I thought, "What is THAT piece, with the rivets on it?", but I soon realized the scale of the creation, and those "rivets" were actually studs! Kudos! -
Looks like a good start! How did you handle the articulation?

@richpantson I really like what you've done here. Despite the dizziness induced by watching this from a camera POV on the tilting train, the affect is significant! Have you done testing as to how fast you can get this tilting train to go on the standard R40 curves, compared to the same train without tilt? Does the tilting have a quantifiable impact on speed?
-
Supported.

@peterab Can you provide any input as to the track plan included with the Cargo train? Is there only one set of points (Left)? Or is it similar to what was included with 60052 (20 curves, 2 points--1 each direction, and 8 straights)?
-
I'm going to have to try this out myself, too! Thanks!

Nicely done!
