Thanks for the comparison photos! I'm quite content with the new one, I don't feel any need to hunt out a used copy of the original.

Now that you mention it, that seems to be the case on those parts from my copies of the set too.

Quoted from the first post Dunno if that helps or if it refers to the very tips of the guns at all

At $100, I was happy to get three copies for myself and one to give away (two from Lego, two from Walmart), but if the set had been priced at $200 or $250 in order to include a landing pad and a moonbase I would not have been willing to buy extra copies. So Lego got more money from me by making a single, perfect, affordable, spaceship than they would have if they'd included the other content. For me, 90% of the playability of the set would be in the spaceship, so the other content would not be "twice as good for twice the money." For comparison, I got one copy of the $200 Barracuda Bay for me and one to give away, and I only got one copy of the $200 Space Shuttle Discovery. As far as I'm concerned, the strategy of just releasing the single spaceship at a good price point, with two sets of extra instructions, was brilliant marketing.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
icm replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Just think of the grill pieces as anti-burglary bars instead of balconies, I guess. That brings them right back into minifig scale, even as the building itself is scaled down. -
The seating position in the 918 is really easy to modify using the remaining parts. Landing gear and an improved antenna module are harder and really need extra parts to do well. Even so, the 918 is much better than most 3-in-1 B models, and the 924 is as good as any A model.

They're hidden in the photo. I also left off some lights and antennas from the original sets.

@Murdoch17 You've got a pretty good Nexus Force fleet yourself, and your rail yard is totally loco too! (Pardon the pun, I couldn't help it :)

I built 75333 last night from your instructions, skipping the instructions in the box entirely. It is, I think, everything I have ever wanted a set of this particular vessel to be. Not as screen accurate as a MOC designed from scratch but accurate enough to satisfy me, not as small as it should be for strict 1s1f scale, but much smaller and lighter and sturdier than the 2002 model, and with this mod also quite noticeably smaller and lighter and sturdier than the 2018 model that was in yellow for Anakin. This is one of those sets that I've been wanting for nearly twenty years, so it was a must buy for me. Thanks again for the instructions!

I'm not going to look for the source right now, but I remember reading (or hearing) in one of the designer interviews that it's exactly that. The primary colors inside the wing of the 10497 are chosen to be only the colors available in 1979.

You built a time machine out of a DeLorean, out of a Ferrari? Very nice.

Santa's Sleigh was such a great set. I wasn't able to get it last year, but I was planning to buy it along with Santa's Visit in, say, October of this year to have it in time for Christmas. Little did I suspect that it was going to vanish from Shop at Home at the end of July to make way for the new Christmas sets. It seemed like the kind of set that would be sold for years and years to come. Now it's going for $60 to hundreds of dollars on Bricklink. I realize it's just a simple matter of supply and demand, but is there any chance that someone would be willing to part with a used copy of 40499 for close to its original RRP of $35? I live in the western US. Thanks!

The Forest Hideout was the GWP when I placed my pre-order for 10497 in June. My card was just charged for the purchase and the tracking number says it should be delivered on Monday. However, the Forest Hideout GWP will be shipped separately and its tracking number has no delivery date. We'll see if it gets here!

That is, indeed, a veritable Tower of Babel in Lego form. Congratulations on topping out, good luck on finishing the facade.

Latest impact of other themes on historic themes
icm replied to Wardancer's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
That would be nice, but I doubt there's any intention to do that. I think it's just part of the 90th Anniversary branding. -
^ Agreed on both points!

I like that last spaceship. Can you post more pictures of it?

If you count the studs, the 918 here is just about the same overall length as the last T-70 X-wing model. It has a smaller wingspan but much thicker, bulkier wings. Without building either of the two in Studio I'd call it a toss-up as to which is more massive. So this 918 is pushing the limits of the typical Lego single-seat starfighter size class, but it's not definitively oversized. Just scaled up in proportion like the 924 and the 928. I do think it's interesting that the 924 here is larger and bulkier than the original 928 set, but that's only to be expected if the 928 has been scaled up 50% in every direction.

Glad I'm not the only one who's been wondering about that.
-
It wasn't just the angles. It was also because of the 1x1 notch at the wider-angle corner. But mostly it was because they didn't have notches for studs along the edge, so they couldn't be layered on top of each other or other plates. The notched edges of modern wedge plates are the real game-changer in use case compared to the old wedge plates.

I agree with that. Modern wedge plates without the corner notch are much better. Also modern wedge plates have angle ratios that are easier to work with: 1/1, 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/6. The old wedge plates are 3/7, which is between 1/2 and 1/3. Every now and then, though, I wish there was a modern 3/7 wedge plate with stud notches, because sometimes I just want something in between a 1/2 angle ratio and a 1/3 angle ratio ....
