Brethren of the Brick Seas (BoBS) Intro Thread, Era II
Bodi replied to Bregir's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Meaning there isn't big difference between an individual player and a trade company, if the TC isn't chartered. Sounds less interesting now, thanks for the clarification. -
To: Count Mesabi of Debonshire Sometime you have to be patient when dealing with OL aristocrates, since they have to follow all kinds of etiquettes and formalities. However, the fact they are having this negotiation with you countrymen means they wish to improve the mutual understanding and smooth the tension between our two kingdoms. Personally, I'm looking forward to meeting you soon, whether on OL soil or COR territory. Cordially, Berart Mazan, Duc de Boussac.

@Mesabi Where did you find all these rules? I want the links. Btw, I'm not the leader of Oleon anymore, I asked in the faction pm a couple of months ago to find someone to replace me, unfortunately it took more time than I expected but now we have a new co-leader: @CapOnBOBS One person for now, other players are welcome to join in. If Cap wants to have his own TC, I'm perfectly fine with that. -
Most of the ships I'm posting here have been posted in the Bobs subforum previously, but part of them became undisplayable since Mocpages shut down. So I thought it would be a good idea to provides some sort of summary. I started shipbuilding about ten years ago, in the beginning, I haven't a clue about how to make my mocs look right, then after some searches on Brickshelf and Mocpages, I found some plans, and it was a "Aha" to me. La Combattante was my first ship in the Bobs, it was built 4 years ago. Now looking at the picture, I can find a few problems with it. The most notable one is the stern, it's too large compared to the rest of the ship. Usually, it should be narrower than the waist of the hull. So I should have had a closer look of the real ship. Then comes a pair of two-deckers, I forgot their names, since they had been sunk or captured after one turn of MRCA, I had to find a new name for each of them. In brief, they are bigger variants of Captain Greenhair's frigate, using basically the same technique for the tumblehome. Here's my version of Silent Mary in its complete form, as you can see here, same technique was used for the tumblehome, it can effectively reproduce the inward tilt of the hull, nevertheless, it was inevitable to have the tumblehome divided in several sections, so I wondered if I can find a way to make it look more smooth. I got the occasion to try find an answer in my next ship. Oleon always needs more ships so why not build another frigate. In the meantime, I bought a few books on ship model building, which were very helpful. To achieve that smooth transition, hinge plates were used to create the curve, and hinge bricks were fixed on these plates to create the inward tilt. It looks indeed better imho, but there's a shortcoming, it works with smaller ships but not with larger ships. When I try to build a twodecker with this technique, the bricks are pressed against each other so tight that it becomes impossible to tilt them inward. After several tentatives with custom hulls, I started the building of a large two-decker. The hardest part was ofc the hull, luckily, I was aiming for a waterline model, much simpler than a full hull model. But even so, I started over two times, because the hulls weren't sturdy enough to support the weight added on them. The final version was of more conventional build, two layers of bricks to form the bottom, the hull was in two half and connected together on some sort of keel. Unfortunalte, I don't have any pic showing this, but there's a pic of another ship built with the same technique, hope you could understand what I'm saying. Photo showing the difference between custom hull and prefab ones. Once the hull completed, the rest was a piece of cake, but it still costed me nearly a year to finish it, with sails and rigging. 2019 was a rather unproductive year, I only a few smaller boats. Then in 2020, the general knock off has increased significantly my lego time, so I took the chance to build another two ships. Here and here. Followed by two frigates, of similar size but differ on certain details. As you can see on the pics. This one and that one. The reason why these ships were built with prefab hulls is my faction was going to war and I had to work out something fast, well relatively, 'cause tying knots is time consuming too. Here come some smaller boats. TLG used to give us narrower hulls, too bad we don't have them anymore in newer sets. Two boat built with these narrower hulls, a bomb ketch and a galleon. I've also tried to build hulls with plates, as we can see two examples here; The prefab shrouds can also be used to build smaller boats:

[OL - Faction Flavours - Micro Reward] Le Petit Bleu

Neat build, nice pic too, it's hard to tell if it's an actual photo or rendered by LDD. -
Clever use of the Friends hull, white and blue is very OL-ish. I like how richely decorated she is, though I think you could try to build custom guns, instead of using TLG's as chasers, unless if you want to keep the playability feature.

@CapOnBOBS Congratz, wishing a properous future to the LBSF. Also, To whom it may be concerned in the court: I'd like to take this opportunity to ask if it's possible for Oleon to have more than one trade companies, since I'm planning to create my own too, I have a large commercial build ready, which comprises a headquarter and a warehouse, I own some ships too, if there's other things I need to do, please let me know. -
Thank you evan, these narrow hulls work quite well for small ships, glad you like my boat. Thanks mate, so it's a Fluyt, I thought it was a galleon. Thanks NOD, glad you like it. That's true for the moment I have to borrow from other OL members to licence them, but they should bring profit in the long run, as long as they still afloat. Thanks Thaum, the forecastle was the trickiest part to build, as I had to achieve a transition between that blocky structure and the pointed bow, and I'm happy that it turned out not so bad.

Looks really good, really good, I'm impressed. Some interesting techniques here, taking notes.

You did some decent works, Nod, impressive fleet, the large galleon in the first pic is my favourite.

As said in the title, something has to be done about my accounts, after having realized that I own only 7 dbs. Luckily, there are 3 ships readily available, I built them many months ago, now it's time to put them into good use. I hope they'll sail safely and swiftly and earn me a bunch of doubloons this turn. It's an upgraded version of the new Creator ship, it has a longer and taller hull than the original one. Here's the third one: Le Fastoche Class:4 Cost:300 Range: 4 Maneuvre: 2 Firepower: 2 Crew: 3 Cargo: 5 Hull: 2 Total: 18

Very nice depiction of Lotii (Chinese) warriors of 16-17th century, the equipment and armament they are using are era-appropriate, and I'm glad that you managed to avoid the stereotypes like bamboo hats and pigtails. I should check those Koruits too.

Thank you Ayrlego for typing all the words above, I have a clearer view of the situation now. Only a question, if I understand correctly, Nola Mar is now a city, even it doesn't have a royal property? -
[Esl-FB] Ténotclaxcans are going to war
Bodi replied to Tezclatipoca's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Biensur, sans rancune, allez on se serra la main. I beg you pardon, but the current situation in TV is the outcome of OL's adventure started roughly 4 years ago. If you've some time to spare, I suggest you to re-read the RNTC adventure, it's a long and complicated story, involving COR, ESL, TV, Atwi, Loyalists and OL. It'll be quite interesting to find out how this adventure ended in a war.
