Had a productive building session today, I've built the complete tower structure to hold the rotating arm: It's getting bigger and bigger, I completely depleted my stock of yellow 15 and 13 beams on the tower frame! But it looks great if I may say so myself... I've used @tkel86's geometry tool for calculating all the triangles to create the tower structure, very useful tool.

  4. So smooth... but your main towers are indeed struggling a bit with the forces... Looks like this competition will spawn some really big creations.
  5. Also be prepared to spin the wheels for a long time. According to several people that have built the set ( I do not have it yet myself), it takes the car up to 70cm of driving before the pistons start moving after a gearshift. That is a lot of spins for those small wheels...
  6. I used two sets of double bevel gears at 90 degrees and an axle through the arm to connect the center motor to the outside wheels. Just make sure to brace them properly and they can hold quite some torque.
  7. WIP update. Its becoming a monstrously big build... Redesigned the arm to be stronger, using 4x the rack&housing parts. Integrated the tensioners on both ends to keep the chain links from sagging and produce enough friction to the wheels driving the chains: Hooked up an XL motor to one of the wheels at the end of the arm from the center turntable pivot (ouside the arm) and it runs : Speed of rotation looks good for now. I still have to connect the motor to the other driving wheel as well, so I'm confident it will work with the added weight of the remaining 7 pods. Then add the posts to mount the turntables and add drive to the rotation of the main arm. I have to make a frame on each side, because the arm will be to heavy to be attached from one end only...

  9. For this contest I'm building a ride inspired by The Zipper: Here is my current progress: I started with the rotating arm to get a feel for size and weight. Currently there is a lot of sagging on the chains, I tried to build in a tensioner with springs, but I do not know if it will be strong enough in the end. Also the driving wheels for the chains rely purely on friction, this might be to weak as well. I have an alternative in mind, but first I will create all pods to see what happens with all weight attached. More to come...

  11. Already did that . And I think it is actually BECAUSE it is "just" a small crane that cost you the same time as a much bigger MOC that you are getting all the praise. Anyone who has tried building in that compact scale knows how hard it is to make something that is functional and strong compared to bigger MOCs.
  12. I'd like to nominate this little beauty: Smallest representation of a full function folding crane I've ever seen, and capable of lifting (more than) it's own weight... Just. Wow.
  13. Awesome little model! Very well thought out, great presentation with the box and instructions and superb functions for this scale. Shows that you don't need 4000 parts to build a working crane... HOF indeed!
  14. I started Technic around 1990, straight from system without any 'dark age'. I still remember picking up 8880 brand new from the store a few years later with my hard earned weekend job money. That changed my life. All my early builds where full studded off course, mostly reverse engineering sets I didn't have. My real MOCcing only began way after the introduction of studless, and my style became mostly inspired by the dense style of Madoca and the clean style of Crowkillers. My goal nowadays is mostly to build something like irl, including the general positioning of elements and functions. Having two young kids as test team makes sure everything is as rigid as possible. This is not always the most efficient in Lego, but gives me most satisfaction (hence the 3600+ parts in my 7seater familycar for instance, which could easily have been done with under 3000 parts if I would have made consessions to my philosofy). I would describe my style and its evolvement as increasingly dense and parts heavy, but all parts should have a function (well, apart from bodywork which is only for show off course...). . My style follows the new available parts, so its evolving further as Lego evolves.

  17. I haven't built it yet, but watched a few speedbuild vids already. I stopped watching Brick Builder's vid after a few minutes, the build was so rushed and sloppy it hurts... many many small mistakes and misalignments all over the place...
  18. That's huge. Wonder if it would be possible to mod it so that the shock is at an even greater angle ( move top mount 1stud inside?). Guess that would fix a big part of sagging (although it will decrease bottom clearance as well...).
  19. Noticed that as well, crankshafts are wobly as h*ll so transferring power through them seems at least suboptimal... But seeing the density of the entire build, I think it would require loads of changes to accomodate 3x 24t on the other side of the engine. Especially since 24t are slightly wider than 3studs, you would need 5studs room or bushes in correct allignment to make that fit.
  20. I can't see it because of the density, but do you have the axle with the 24t gear that is meshing with the blue 20t on the D-N-R selector connected to the main driveshaft somewhere? Otherwise nothing will be driven when the blue 20t is engaged... Edit: oh wait... the red 16t on the D-N-R must be reverse (since it connects directly to engine, it is a single speed), so then the 24t-20t mesh is the gearbox output for 8x forward
  21. I've yet to see whether it is an actual bargain, but I recently preordered the 42083 chiron for €325. Have to wait until august for it to be shipped (for free), but 20% below MSRP before actual release date does seem like a good deal.
  22. I just pre-ordered mine, got my wife to agree with it and couldn't wait anymore... Not gonna look at this thread for a while, to make sure it has some surprises left when it arrives... Happy speculating everyone
  23. +1 Still, I couldn't resist checking the pics out, and oh my... this set just gets better and better. I'm really hyped for those new gearbox parts! Let's hope they got the gear sequence right this time... This is actually turning into a day 1 must have... Have to find a way to convince my wife that this set is money well spent at full price... But with fathers day and my birthday coming in a few weeks, I might just get away with it
  24. Thanx, I'm pretty happy with the engine myself as well. As for the gearbox, I get what you're saying, but it was the only way to make it fit in the confined space available. Control links would have taken to much interior space... As a whole, I see the gearbox as one big proof of concept, and the rest is the packaging. I think an 8speed gearbox in the center console at this scale is just a bit too much...
  25. So it's been over two months, but here's an update to this build. Haven't had much time for building, but managed to get some things done nontheless. I built a second chassis next to the orange version, including all the tweaks I did in LDCad. Started with the red and blue livery (scavenging the parts from 42070): After seeing @Pvdb's double shifter solution on his gearbox in the Ultimatum GTR v10 supercar MOC, I knew I had to implement that myself as well. So I made v2 of my gearbox: Apart from working smoother compared to v1, the stepper mechanisms are much smaller (sitting lower) now and better divided over left and right side. This gave me the opportunity to increase the interior space and even include two small backseats with center armrest (still WIP): And last but not least I shortened the engine into a V6, giving me more room to properly connect the gearbox to the engine. I started working on LDCad to flesh out the engine a bit more, and came up with this V6 biturbo+intercooler design: So tell me what you think so far. A little side note, here are some comparison pics of the orange version alongside 42077, to answer @Jeroen Ottens's question. On average they are quite comparable in size (wheelbase/trackwidth are almost exactly equal), although 42077 has a shorter rear overhang, a much narrower passenger compartment and about 4 studs less height: Guess I don't need to explain where the dark azure parts are going to end up soon...
