DC Superheroes 2021 - Rumors & Discussion
RedHoodPug replied to Captain Nemo's topic in LEGO Licensed
With that film there’s potential for Adam, Dr Fate, Atom Smasher, and Hawkman with non flimsy wings. With the Squad there’s King Shark, Peacemaker and his toilet seat helmet, Starro, and so many others. I shan’t get my hopes up though. -

I kind of get the spin they gave for doing it. It’s a crowded field and they want to focus on the immediately upcoming ones, but it seems daft when recognition of Darkseid couldn’t be greater. It was worded like it was benched rather than canned, but we shall see. I can’t say the same for The Trench. I really hope Lego restores its faith in this theme. It seems crazy that the MCU is getting retrospective sets and the Worlds of DC gets sets almost out of reluctance. If they only did tie-in sets for The Suicide Squad I’d be happy. A Black Adam JSA set won’t go wanting either. -
Nope, he was based on a radio character who was a senator famed for the “I say” and “now listen here boy” vernacular, with a Texas rancher thrown in. Nothing plantation about it. She’s been around since the 1930s, but it’s fair to say that she has had more work in the last few years than she did back then.

Lego strives to be fair and representative, so Petunia will likely have been added to dilute the mainly male environment. Seeing as they dismissed Elmer and Sam I would say that they dismissed Granny and Witch Hazel for the same reason, meaning they would have to go deeper to find female characters. As Pepe has been ostracised it stands to reason that Penelope has been too. I can’t think of one reason for Foghorn to be considered controversial, though.

So the development of New Gods as a film series has come to an end, as does hope of any sets based on it. -

The retailer has potentially ripped off the minifigure design if they aren’t using actual Lego, and you can be damned sure that they didn’t get permission from DC to make them, nor entered into a contract. It’s not illegal in the UK but the purchase of counterfeit goods is illegal in America and many others. Purchasing knockoff goods might not always be illegal, but it’s perpetuating the market, which is valued in the trillions of dollars. -
FRIENDS 2021 - Rumours & Discussion

I don’t think it’s hate, that’s overused on social media when the more appropriate word is disagreement. It’s neither stealing or profiting. The person who submitted the idea to Lego doesn’t own any rights to anything. I wouldn’t be surprised if there is small print that states that Lego is well within its rights to make further sets if the Ideas set sells well. The entire premise is profiting from someone’s idea, and if that idea is an existing licensed property then the idea isn’t original anyway. The submission comes with a financial cut, so in essence it’s no different than a company using agencies to outsource work. Every for profit company profits from the work and ideas of its staff. It’s called capitalism. It’s ok to be wrong, it’s part of how we learn. -
If only Wiley had a sign saying “What am I doing?” rather than an anvil. I know ideally he would have had Roadrunner as an animal mould, but given the fact that everyone has a new head mould it would be apparent that the budget for accessories was lower. On the strength of that, I’m not sure what people were expecting with Roadrunner. I think Taz could have benefited from a better whirlwind than a PDM’s plate. I get the need for balance but if they had to include a female character then Petunia wasn’t it for me.

All of this.

Both carry weapons as part of their character. I would have liked to see them, but if they wanted to even the gender balance then someone had to give. Pepe doesn’t comprehend that no means no, so he’s out.

I have to say that as much as I like these, it does appear that Lego are stuck on a loop with this theme. Clearly we were spoiled with the JL wave. -

I like both of these, finally a’66 Batmobile that I can get to add to the lineup. Weird there’s no Robin but it is what it is. The 4+ Joker mobile is pretty sweet, I like the dragster look. Roll on the big boy. -

A £200 Bat pod would be vast. I don’t see it myself. The existing one already goes with the Tumbler, with the matching front tyres. -

I haven’t got all of the figures from the original Batman run, but I do have the figures from the Batmobile and Catwoman sets. From the relaunch I don’t have the Catwoman set or the second Arkham, nor any of those figures. I’ve got Superboy and Lightning Lad, which had to be imported at (annoyingly) great expense. I don’t have the ‘66 Batcave, which I regret not buying, nor the Wonder Woman movie set, the Knightcrawler or the Flying Fox. I have everything from the TLBM run except the Batwing, the shuttle, and Wayne Manor. I don’t have the Bat truck yet, but I feel it’s going to come my way anyway. I don’t have, nor am I interested in the SDCC figs. -

They aren’t going to blow everything in the trailer. It’s there to tempt you in. I for one was excited about this the moment I found out that Gunn was doing it. I still feel the same. If Lego can react like they did with the other one, then I’ll be even happier. -

Who said it has to be two hours? If your story takes longer than two hours to tell, then two hours isn’t enough. It’s why there are sequels and second parts. Would the Avengers Infinity War saga have worked in one two hour film? There’s no restriction on how long a story has to be. Snyder clearly had a longer film planned, and being given a slot on HBO has meant that he can flex more. He even admits that there’s more he has cut out of this one. Look at it this way; comic books, the source material for these films, don’t fit a set number of issues to tell a single story. There’s single issues, one shots or graphic novels, two-twelve or more parters, year long stories, company wide crossovers, and retrospectives. The contents of the plot are not a reflection of the quality of the director. In this case it’s a matter of a new director trying to outdo the original, and it backfiring. In the age of home streaming runtime isn’t really a concern. That and the length of the film used to depend upon the length of physical film available and the can size, which would have been a cost issue. -

By the looks of it Snyder got to coherently tell the story he wanted to, which I would rather have instead of Whedon’s botched surgery attempt at Snyder’s vision. Granted there’s moaning about the runtime, but if it’s going to make sense I don’t see the problem. I say bring on the version we were always meant to see. -

If they are gender swapping the existing character it’s not really creating a brand new character, is it? That’s just lazy and not exactly creative or new. If they use Plas’s backstory, but as a woman, that isn’t new, it’s an overused trope. Earth-11 had the ability to be something decent, but just flipping the dynamic and giving the characters similar names isn’t a great stretch of creative muscle. There currently isn’t a Plastic Woman on the roster, and the original isn’t widely established enough in pop culture for the edgy move of switching things up. There are myriad Golden Age female heroes that they could draw on and still have a decent film, seeing as they want a female led effort. By no coincidence Phantom Lady made her first appearance in the same comic that Plas did - Police Comics no. 1 from 1941. I have an early reproduction copy because I don’t have the money for a real one; it’s a good piece of comics history and worth looking up. The heritage is there for the taking. By the same token I see no issue with a Calvin Ellis headed Superman film, because his character is established, popular, and not Clark Kent in black face. If you want to try and label me as a misogynist then the rest of this conversation is going to be very short, as unless you want to discuss this like an adult then I’m not going to respond. My apologies to the mods for veering off topic, but as you can appreciate the fruit that DC Lego is bearing is limited to a well printed Batman. -

To be fair to me I wrote that on the fly and was generalising with faithful. Keeping up with the times in terms of filmmaking. I won’t cover all, only the stinkers. Catwoman - just terrible and missed every mark it could have aimed at. Constantine - a controversial one but Reeves was not Constantine, as well as a few other nitpicks for me. Jonah Hex - a bugbear of mine, this was more than just the writing, this was the majority of the production itself. Green Lantern - a few swings and misses, but nothing as bad as Hex. It could have survived without the whole Hector Hammond storyline. They over CGI’d the whole thing to me. A shame, because Mark Strong was brilliant and the late Michael Clarke Duncan was the right choice also. As for the Snyderverse, Batman shouldn’t kill, and Superman shouldn’t be so grouchy. That’s just the surface layer. On the bright side, I’m really looking forward to TSS, Black Adam, and Shazam 2. The near inevitable meeting of the latter is high on my list. In the further future I am also keen to see Spielberg make Blackhawk, allegedly he’s making West Side Story first. I just read that a Plastic Man film with be made as a female centred story, which just annoys me. Not in a sexist way, but he’s a long established character with over 80 years of history. Make the film about him or create a completely new character. He doesn’t need gender swapping to succeed. If the Blue Beetle goes ahead and does well, hopefully they will get to unite Jaime with Booster. I’m also very interested to see how New Gods fares, being a Kirby fan. -

Indeed, all good directors who are all savvy with the genre and modern film making. One of the biggest problems has been them making something that may possibly be faithful but misses the mark in terms of keeping up with the times. -

They’ve got nearly 90 years of history, dozens of worlds and genres, and thousands of characters worth of material. There is so much to delve into, they just need more content aware script writers, directors and casting directors. -

I’ve made purist versions of the main three, Chief, Jane, and Brain. I don’t know whether to try and do something with a Grodd fig to make Mallah, or build one. Dorothy is next on my list, which is going to be a case of switching out the head of TLM2 Dorothy, most likely for one from Clone Wars. Making Mr Nobody and AVM Man might be outside my remit. In the pipeline are a bunch of WW2, Western and Golden Age characters, and the odd vehicle. I really don’t want to go down the custom road because some of them are insane money.
