Thank you Edwin. It's been a fun build. As for my next project, that'll be the Claas. -

Thank you. Pictures really don't do her justice. She's a far better looking model in the brick. Thank you Bart. It's been an experience. This is the first old style Technic set I've built other than the 8461. I've had the set for at least 2 years but being studded I'd avoided building it, I'm really glad that I now have done. I have the 8880's 'cousin' the 8466 which I now look forward to building in the near future. My only regret is not taking stage by stage pictures from the start. I'll let you know if I decide to sell. If I do, you need not worry, I always check for and replace any marked parts on sets after disassembly. -

Build Day 8 - Days build time 2hrs 30mins / Total build time 38hrs 25mins Today I fitted the 'engine cover' and last few pieces to the car. I'm pleased to say the old girl's now finished. As most of you know, I'd never really rated the 8880. I'd read about it & seen pictures and while I admired the functions it wasn't one of those sets that I thought I must have. Anyway, I thought it was ugly as sin. Seeing it in the brick has changed that opinion somewhat. Building this has been a real experience, it's been challenging and at times deeply frustrating but more than anything it's been a joy. I just don't want to see another hinge for a while, this set has 54 of the little blighters. Speaking of hinges, I don't know who designed this set but they deserve praise for such clever use of the parts available at the time. Achieving those lines with not a flexi axle in sight is quite something. I'm still undecided as to whether or not I'll sell this set. Being the dust magnet that I know it is means it won't be sitting on the shelf for long and just keeping it in it's box on a shelf once dismantled somehow doesn't seen right. I'll have to think about it. Lastly, a few thank you's. It was reading Technicopedia a few years ago that persuaded me to seek out this set so thank you to Blakbird for all his hard work. Thank you to Grosse Kind for his build advice (apologies for not building it in RHD ). Finally, a big thank you to all of you who requested I build the 8880. Without you it'd still be sitting in its box, likely never to be built. That would almost have been a crime. Here's the pictures of the finished 8880. -

Very original idea to use pneumatics for your carousel. I like your use of the BWE parts. -

I'm not rich, very far from it and I don't buy UCS sets but of course you're free to buy what you want, Lego, Lepin or otherwise, I'm not saying you're not. All I'm saying is that for the reasons I stated I won't be buying anything other than genuine Lego and if there's a particular set I want I'll save for it.

I wouldn't buy these cheap knock off sets on principle, however good the fit and finish might be but what worries me as much as anything is the possible toxicity of the plastics used. In the past there have been cases where the materials used to make cheap knock off verisions of children's toys have been made children ill. Due to the way I build and the fact that I've got a Grandaughter who's of an age where she's likely to put pieces in her mouth I just wouldn't risk it.

Thank you Edwin. Many's the time I've seen pictures of this set and not really taken to much notice of all the angles. To be honest I'd always thought of it as quite boxy. As for frustrations, that just makes me more determined to accomplish what I'm doing. It's a masterpiece of design. Thank you Blakbird. The problem I had was I kept breaking the assembly apart when fitting parts to it. I lost count how many times I had to rebuild it. As far as I recall, the only other thing I've built that was this tricky & complex was the rotor head on the 9396. -

Build Day 7 - Days build time 6hrs 50mins / Total build time 36hrs 55mins Another good few hours building today with good progress being made. To be honest I've been a tad worried about this part of the build. Looking through the instructions last night to try and come up with a plan for todays building I came to stage 38, the engine 'cover.' A complex assembly with 14 stages. I won't say there haven't been a few frustrations, there have, but thankfully very few. Looking at the car and the 'cover' assembly I'm really impressed by the use of hinges (and there are many of them) to create the overall shape, it really works well. I guess today we'd use flexi axles. All being well this old girl will be finished over the weekend. Here's today's pictures. Note: I know the Technic sticker is on upside down. It's an old sticker placed across two 1x6 tiles and I didn't want to risk damaging it by trying to remove them to turn the sticker the correct way round. That's something I'll ask Gilly to do.
