LEGO Ninjago 2021
Pirean_Grammaticul replied to Driver Brandon Grumman's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
interesting thread. to no one's shock, the most visibly avid gurren lagann fan on the lego design team was the one responsible for getting a skull face into the mech (not that i'm complaining; i love gurren lagann and this is frankly an improvement over the last titan mech) interesting design stuff too; the process of realizing a set was cool to learn about, but the way he pulled off the knees was :chefs_kiss:. guess i don't have to worry about the mixel joints failing me. now if the x1 charger was anywhere near as good... -

i will say it's interesting that they're capturing jay again/putting him in the big sets with main-ish characters after nearly two full years of not doing that -

very interesting wave overall, glad to see the sets still hold up; insofar as ninja designs go, i like them all but prefer simpler designs like kai or nya or cole over jay and lloyd (but i'm glad they've got the stranded look to them: zane looks almost identical to his hunted variant funnily enough). villains look very interesting, sets themselves are neat, and i'll probably try to get a couple if only for those hairs -

ngl i'd like to see different leg prints with differently-colored sashes and leg wrappings but as far as they go right now they look fine (and best on kai of course). legacy's figs in general seem to be lagging greatly, however: with the repeated eyezor and no cultists (likely lego threw out the anacondrai skull sometime after using it on the bounty in 2017), lack of legacy 2 zane despite how well he would fit in the boulder blaster cage (which i suppose has to do with choosing yellow or titanium zane but still), the ghosts all being ghoultar with different hats, lack of leg printing on all nindroids despite their torsos implying some robe continuity, and a hypnobrai finally popping up this year, it seems like the ninjago design team's priorities do not rely whatsoever with minifigures or creating interesting legacy variants of old costumes. im no serious advocate for "accurate legacy figures", but certainly (taking the bounty as an example) figures like young lloyd and a somewhat improved samurai x would be preferred over "zx" ninja with a single shoulderpad each and the same wu with the same movie face multiple times. -

new tie is swell but im thinking back to when we got one for 394 pieces if lego was fine with making a new piece for the x-wing at a smaller scale maybe creating a 4x4 or 5x5 (blegh) cockpit would've helped just a tad bit -

like that lego's trying to fix the x-wing's nose but it seems they forgot the indent anyways lol, shouldn't be a hard fix; the leadup to it, however, could use some work, starting with a modification of the nose technique from 2004 to save 2 studs' space and get the flow right. back could've used the 2018 windscreen technique (which could really have saved parts and space ironically) but overall it's on the right path tie on the other hand is just a microfighter promoted to $40: im fine with it but my only thoughts on it are that lego needs to get a 4X4 canopy out there: with how the hulkbuster this year turned out a 4X4 dish with clips would be more than welcome. -

overlord dragon doesn't look half bad; it's got some weird aspects to it sure, like the choice to use a whole plate on the base of the wings or the addition of dark blue to match garmadon's newer colourscheme, but it's relatively imposing and has the look of the show's overlord dragon for the most part: you get the stick-arms connecting to the wings, the near-skeletal wings (which could've used some plastic but it works as a contrast to the golden legacy dragon), the beefy legs and torso, dragon head, etc, with an additional homage to the overlord's design with a golden ribcage in the chest; and there's the golden master overlord updated! it's not half bad, though it could definitely use some modification, and it's still a far better translation of a show model into a marketable product than that of a previous model that was nearly perfect... -

just kidding, thought it was funny that 2 guys with the same-ish username would post similarly about this set and instinctively thought to burner accounts anyways love the overlord dragon, may consider getting it and hoping to get the golden dragon before the end of the year; love the new overlord insofar as i can see it -

i'm seeing 2 mixel joints from the box art, which is certainly odd given all other knees on mechs like the titan mech have used ball joints; hoping it's stable -

i never implied you were asking about the family? i was just saying his family hasn't provided an answer and that should mean something to all of us like asking about how he died is kinda insensitive next to the fact that he died at all; not everything needs an answer because awful shit happens sometimes, and we might get angry about it but ultimately it's not in our control and knowing how he died won't really do much to fix that. im sure you mean well, but idunno asking how he died just seems callous in light of everything else- 4,591 replies

well by all means go ahead but if his family hasn't provided an answer it's good to assume they're not comfortable with providing the cause of death, maybe have some empathy?- 4,591 replies

i believe their designs are essentially the same outer robe over a their suits from their focal years: if you look closely jay's got some digital-looking pattern under his suit and kai seems to have either the legacy or sotfs robe under his. words do not contain my disappointment; good to know the original's something like $33 used on bricklink -

LEGO Ninjago 2020
Pirean_Grammaticul replied to GarmaFan's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
yeah certainly, but at the very least it would be nice if they weren't worse: if they're supposed to be modernized forms they could at least build off of what came before. the x1 charger is iconic despite its scene being one of the most blatant commercialist displays in the show (which fortunately doesn't happen often), and virtually a masterpiece in the original rebooted lineup; this new one is a model that doesn't have the angles or style or bravado of the original and ultimately will disappear from your mind as soon as your eyes leave it. like, take the titan mech: that's a clear upgrade from the original, a mech that was largely composed of the conventional brick-on-brick build and lacked the visual splendour of, say, the original fire mech or earth mech at the same scale. the boulder blaster pulls from an impeccable set that functions well as a lego nerf gun and adds details like landing gear and the noodle machine decoy and spices the colors up with sand green and orange. the earth driller and lightning jet from legacy wave 1, back when the subtheme looked to have more potential than old ninja vehicles with different interpretations, turn relatively shabby models into larger, more show accurate vehicles with more flair and greebling than the originals had. besides that, certainly part of the point is to get more accurate vehicles and characters with hindsight: there's no giant stone warrior to reference in the lego sets, yet we got one with the earth driller; the ultra dragon in the sets was a mess of green and grey and brown, but in legacy form it's a wonderful white and tan with hints of grey. the ninjago design team can absolutely create legacy models with the original sets as a good benchmark of what to improve or what aspects to model after, but with this wave and especially as a 10th anniversary wave it feels like lego's skimping on the figures that are actually theme-related, and notably in tournament (condrai cultists, clouse and chen, jade blades which i can kinda get) for a guy in a turban, a guy in an afro and a guy with a beard (and they're cool and i get it but i can't imagine they pulled too much out of the budget to design). so yeah, for 10th anniversary i think they're nice but relatively disappointing for a winter wave: even one legacy location would've been neat; frankly, im just glad i can save 8 dollars by buying the 2014 x1 charger for $8 less than the new one's msrp -

hate the new x1 charger with a burning passion, i know the original hood pieces are gone but at the very least they could've tried to mimic that angle; it's very chunky and lacks the flair of the set from 6 years ago, so gonna have to buy that for a couple dollars more than the original msrp if i didn't have the boulder blaster or the titan mech tho i'd consider getting both: boulder blaster looks like they translated the function over form into a more formidable vehicle but i guess im just not drawn to it that much (also put zane or karlof in cowards), while the titan mech looks like a worthwhile upgrade over the awful secondary to the ghost samurai mech: love the way the legs are built (though wish the thighs had some rotatable joint to simulate realistic legs) and the torso gives off gurren lagann vibes (toothdominoes was definitely behind this one). might sell mine actually to get the upgrade going. funnily enough i've made a dojo showdown remake but i might've overpriced it; not a fan of the trans-green weapon pack used for the "jade blades" and reusing eyezor everywhere really sucks but i guess they threw out the moulds. this kinda stuff gets really disappointing insofar as "legacy" goes: you don't get what you got in 2014 but better, you get something new that in some cases is better and some worse. with the skeletons not resembling their prior figures outside of the head, the nindroids lacking leg printing, and the two singular venomari and pythor (glad we finally get a hypnobrai ig) comprising the ranks of serpentine legacy doesn't exactly deliver on bringing a "legacy" series to ninjago. idunno im kinda disappointed with this wave; i guess it's neat that some of the best ninjago vehicles are getting remade in this style but i'm starting to get tired of just ninjago hero vehicles being the only thing remade (exception being the cole vehicles: those have hit it out of the park each time and it's a good way to remember mr morrow ig) when we've got a fire temple in need of remaking, or a temple of light that isn't lackluster and isn't confused about whether it's the inside or the outside, or really any big ninjago location or interesting "villain" vehicle with its own flair unlike the increasingly similar-looking ninja vehicles -

oh neat they remade lego set 7113 with the huts and a different speeder for mando but seriously it looks nice, mando has nice arm printing and the ballista is pretty well built. probably worth getting more than one copy of the hut to finish the circle and line em up with an angsty anakin to chop through -
