  1. 100% agree. I saw your note and went exploring to figure out why I didn't get the HD PDF files... Well I ordered it on November 7th so I guess I jumped the gun too soon so I planned to email the PV Production folks and politely ask for the file... well they had already sent me an updated link to download the file earlier today without my having to ask. I like that!!! The pdf file is 47 mb large but the instructions are beautiful... I wish I had these to start. I won't be using the LDD file anymore! FYI the axle lengths are still not indicated but other than that the HD pdf instructions are high quality!
  2. Maybe I'm missing something but I don't see the part description in "building mode" which I use to generate the step by step instructions (there are no groups as you said). Either way, I am progressing but its slow going. If high resolution pdf files are simply an exported version of the "building mode" steps, I am not sure if they are good enough because I often have to manipulate the model picture (left, right, up, down) to get a good view of where the piece needs to go. Anyways... 60% done and for anyone who hasn't built it yet, I highly recommend adding in the batteries early so you can make sure the gears and mechanisms are working along the way. This is my first LDD build so I don't want anyone to assume my struggles are the fault of the LDD file or the instructions. Aside from adding in groups, which would have been nice, most of my difficulties are due to my lack of familiarity with the software.
  3. @technicfan I do not think so. instead of being self contained modules that are built into a chain, each GBC/C Model is more of a self contained loop. Only the last of the three midels for 42042 is readily usable in a true GBC module way. Of course that does not prevent you from getting creative!
  4. Mr. Prolific a.k.a. PV Productions has created another C Model/GBC Model for set 42042 and the buildiing instructions are available now too. That makes three C Models for the 42042 set. He clearly loves the flexibility of this set!
  5. Life, work, kids and LDD software frustrations are delaying my progress on building this model. I sorely miss the ease of knowing the right axle length, not having the building instructions change every time I open the sofware again after shutting it down for the night... If anyone knows an LDD tip or secret to identify axle or liftarm lengths quickly, please let me know.. Until then, the company/guy has produced ANOTHER GBC model/C-Model based on this set (3 total) and the building instructions are already available. (see video linked above)
  6. Excellent C-Model... especially for those of us who missed out on 42009! Kudos!!!
  7. Excellent c-model. This and the GBC C-Model by PV Productions for this set make a compelling case to pick up this helicopter. Thanks.
  8. The C Model /GBC video was updated for the 42054 model today so you can now see the full model vs. just one module (as I posted above)... and for anyone who like it (like me!) you can now buy the LDD/HTML instructions for 15 EUR.
  9. Excellent work... I've been meaning to purchase the instructions for the bulldozer. This just makes 42042 that much more awesome and a must buy for any remaining skeptics out there. ????
  10. PV-Productions.com has five GBC Models that are good for beginners as they are also C Models of official sets. Knowing that an official set can build them makes these, imo, excellent starter GBC models for those who are intimidated by the sheer complexity and costs of building some of the models I've seen in YouTube. He has GBC/C-Models for: 42042 - 2 separate GBC Models 42043 42052 42054 He sells GBC balls and LDD/PDF buildinginstructions too. One of the 42042 models is available now and the 42044 model will be available in by the end of November 2016. Here is the YouTube video for the one model that has published LDD instructions that I bought recently...
  11. I'd love to see a video or pictures when your done... Are you adding parts or still trying to keep this a C model?
  12. Minor correction... he was advertising two upcoming GBC model instructions for sale... NOT a combined 2-set GBC model. The sets were this one (42042) and 42054 which comes out in a week or so. AND @Carl86. I just placed my order for 50 orange balls... Thanks for the heads up! For everyone else, I noticed that the website changed the lower price shipping option to make it obvious it's for worldwide delivery too... maybe he monitors these Forums... if so... live your stuff and please publish the 2018 instructions EARLIER. 42043 might be out of production by then which would seriously hurt your sales opportunities IMHO.
  13. So you bought the balls from PV productions and shipping was 9 EUR? I saw that price and assumed it was for continental Europe shipping, not the United States.
  14. You're welcome! This may not help you in Russia but for anyone who is aware of Etsy.com, I found a few alternatives to buying the expensive ? or ⚽️ from Lego. You can buy marbles (no hole so better imo) or beads (cheaper) that are 14mm in diameter. EBay had some options but Etsy had a lot more options. If you go the bead route, be sure the hole in the bead is as small as possible so that it doesn't affect how it rolls. I bought 50 white& red beads for $7 a few days ago. It costs 29 Euro (outside of Europe) to ship 15 Euro of the balls from the company who published these C Models, otherwise I would have bought them from him to take out the trial and error of picking the right alternative and making sure the weight of each ball as well as the diameter are close enough to work.
  15. Sounds promising but without video and a non public link it's hard to tell.
  16. Congratulations! I loved all of the out of the box creativity in many of the entries. ??
  17. Three of the 5 C Models (all GBC) by this guy just made it into the C Model Index page. Hopefully the other two will be added soon... I'll be building this one this weekend!
  18. I see you added the two GBC C Models from PV Productions for 42042 and the one for 42043. There are also two more by the same guy/company: 42054 and 42052
  19. I'd have to agree with you on all fronts. My young son doesn't want to build complicated sets and my wife thinks I'm too old for this hobby BUT of all 23 sets I've owned, they both have asked to help build this one because they love it's look and play factors! The only other contender, in my limited experience is 42039 due to all of the C Models but I like the main model of 42042 a lot better than the main model of 42039. I'm with you. I just made my first purchase decision because I want to build it ASAP. The website, videos and building instructions are professional enough that I believe the GBC balls he sells will be legit and the specs will be consistent enough to rely on. I'll say this... I'll be buying ALL the GBC models based on official sets that he makes including the one coming out in a few weeks. It's a nice way to bide my time while I wait for next years sets because I'm not experienced enough to create my own MOCs yet. Completely agree 100%. I have 42043 and 42054 new in the box too and I would definitely build his GBC C Models first if I could!
  20. For me a GBC model, unless sold by Lego would seem to be prohibitively expensive to buy all the necessary parts due to the inclusion of system bricks (which I never buy), the sheer number of parts needed and my limited budget . But to be able to buy a current set and have it have a GBC C Model with instructions to boot is a big deal. This guy has some more GBC C Models already and they are supposed it be released as follows: 42042 #2 - July 1018 42054 - end of November 2016 42052 - July 2018 42043 - July 2018 There are already YouTube videos for all these GBC C models and the image quality and editing are very good. Only problem is that he appears to be taking a sabbatical in 2017 per his release dates for more instructions. As I said earlier, I bought the 42042 set and am just starting to learn the LDD software for this and other rebrickable.com instructions I've found but the packaged zip file was in good order and I appreciated the inclusion of an HTML file with the instructions too (although I would have preferred a PDF file). I ran across that recommendation too but I haven't been able to find any vendors selling it in the USA yet. I'd buy the balls from the same site (their specs exactly match the official Lego weight and size) but I'm too impatient to wait for a shipment from Europe and too cheap to rush the delivery. Cost is 16 EUR for 50 white or orange balls.
  21. I have been shamelessly plugging the Lego Technic 42042 Crawler Crane over in the "What should I buy" thread here at Eurobricks but I just came across a new reason to buy it that I thought was relevant to a more general audience. A company in Europe called PV Productions has created a C-Model that is a GBC contraption. (No relation, ownership nor knowledge of who they are.) calls it a D Model because he has two GBC C models created from the set, but only the D Model is available for purchase now... and purchase it, I did! My seven year old son is into small Lego Techic models as he doesn't have enough patience to build the 1,000+ piece models, but after showing him the video, he wants to build it with me this weekend. Only problem... I don't own any of the Lego soccer or basketballs that are used for GBC models and I have no desire to pay the crazy $2.50+ costs per ball!! I've attached a video below (I assume that's okay) to the Youtube video he created of the D model. I'll be picking up the C-Model as soon as it's available for purchase. He also has pending future GBC models for sales that are all C Models of 42043, 42054 and another that is a 2 set C Model but I cannot recall which... Watch the video and you want to buy the set and want to figure out how to buy some Lego balls or alternatives. If soeone has a good recommendation for an alternate source, I would love to know it. Update: just checked my Paypal receipt and the PV stands for Phillip Verbeek, I think.
  22. Excellent fourth rule! I learned to love 42039 because I liked the numerous C-Models for that set and believe me they are numerous (at least 7 that have published instructions). The C-Model Index here at Eurobricks is good and mostly up to date. One thing I discovered as I was searching for the 42042 video that Sariel made for my earlier post was a fabulous C Model by a guy who sells his models under the PV Productions company name. He has a GBC (Great Ball Contraption) C Model that is available for purchase that after seeing it I bought it immediately (it's a zip file with an LDD file or an html file that both work). It is built 100% from the 42042 model and makes what is an already compelling model even more so... Trust me, the video is worth watching. The only downside is that I just spent an hour of unproductive time trying to find the Lego Balls used in the model (he sells an alterate version on his website). *Just in case someone is cynical about this plug, I don't know the company or the guy and he is located somewhere overseas (Europe?) which is why I didn't buy the balls from him.
  23. It's pretty obvious to me based on all the recent recommendations that three things are good rules to follow as a newbie to Lego Technic (one is cited above): 1. If you love multiple sets and have limited dollars buy the oldest set* that is sold in stores first. The model numbers reflect how new a model is (smaller number = older). 2. Buy medium to larger sets for AFOL folks. The small sets (roughly 350-400 pieces or less) are geared for kids (6-12 or so). The medium and large models are more interesting (imo) because the incorporate more functions, take longer to build and require more advanced building techniques, attention to detail and patience. 3. If the other two rules don't help you to determine which set(s) to buy, look at some speed builds/set reviews on YouTube. There are a number of good folks who do these speed builds, but my personal favorite is "Sariel's Lego Workshop" not because of the speed build sections of his videos but because he provides really good details of how the functions work at the end and he uses a rating system AND Pros and Cons about why you might like or hate the set. I personally have come to love sets that I never had an initial interest in because of Sariel's reviews (like 42042 which is awesome!). *Retired sets can be purchased used or new from private source like BrickLink.com. Used models of recently retired sets can be quite reasonable or not, depending on popularity. "New in box" models of sets no longer sold in stores can be ridiculously overpriced so beware.
  24. I would stick with medium sized sets or a large one. My suggestions of what a new Technic lover should buy to determine if they want to go all in and buy the big stuff (Amazon has the best deals, but Toys"R"Us will price match them if you want a local pickup in the U.S.): 1. 42037 - Formula Off Roader "buggy" - $40 2. 42040 - Fire Plane - $39 and if you want to go bigger but stay close to $100... 3. 42039 - 24 hour race car - $102 4. 42042 - Crawler Crane - $116 Prices are from Amazon.com (to find them simply type Lego + model #) Last thought: The artic truck and mine loader are both heavily discounted on Amazon compared to MSRP. In my opinion this is because the mine loader is boring compared to other sets you could buy for a similar cost and the artic truck's tracks only work on carpet. However if you buy the Off Roader, you can take off the tires and add it to the truck and have a cooler vehicle. I've only considered these two sets as parts packs AFTER I bought almost 20 other sets first.
