[ENTRY] 6259 Broadsides Brig / 6234 Renegades Raft
MstrOfPppts replied to thewatchman's topic in Pirate MOCs
First of all, I'm very glad to see one of the fewer physical entries! It's a nice start though I do have quite some complaints about this build. The rockwork underneath is a bit too high for my taste and takes away some of the recognizability of the original set. I think that two or three bricks height would be more than enough since the original is basically built on a plate and also shown on a not so high island. Maybe even make it a tad bit larger - from 6 to 8 studs per model? As in some other entries I miss more yellow as it is the highlight of this set. I had it as a kid and that decorated yellow panel was such a great piece I wouldn't be ashamed to use it even in an updated version. Also sometimes the changes are unnecessary as with the arches above the prison window. The original would look better, for this one has a more Arabic vibe. Also as mentioned elsewhere black for the wood looks a bit outdated for a modern remake. And finally use some headlights or SNOT bricks with cheese slopes to further continue the line of the wedge bricks or mix in a 3x3 wedge to not make the wall look so serrated. I do understand that building physically has its limitations on the bricks availability though. Else I really like the modular approach for this remake! As for the raft I've mentioned in a previous entry - I think that the brackets add some unnecessary height to it. Use some 1x2x1 2/3 bricks with four studs on side underneath the plate and build the logs from there.- 25 replies

[ENTRY] 6262 King Kahuka’s Throne Remake
MstrOfPppts replied to SevenDeadlyStreamers's topic in Pirate MOCs
This is an incredible MOC, not that much of an official set potential, yet according to staff it seems to fit the competition rules. Anyway I really love the statue head, love the pointy nose and the inclusion of sand green to make it look a bit old and used. Unfortunately it's the only part that reminds me of the set you were trying to recreate. I do understand the artists freedom, though these recreations are slowly getting out of hand for my taste. It's like trying to recreate a 20-30 price point set in the style of an UCS ... This is just me, but I really don't like CREATOR line. Many say it has lots of interesting and diverse parts, but what I don't like is that we don't get specialized parts like sails and molded animals. Brick build sails and animals just don't work for me. The crocodile is built very nicely and could easily be a CREATOR set on its own, but for my taste it does not fit into a pirates set especially since LEGO has a recent mold for it. It is too big and uses too many parts in non existing colors to be included in an official set as a side build. Note that this is just my point of view. I've already mentioned this problem in the rules of this competition even before it started. Otherwise as said an incredible build nevertheless! -
What an epic entry and such a great choice of a set to remake! I liked both versions - the connected and separated islands. Can't make up my mind which one looks better. Though I do agree that a lot of black should be switched to brown. I imagine most of these would be brown back in the days if LEGO did all the pieces in that color already. Like the Barracuda Bay is mostly brown and something LEGO really screwed up with the Eldorado remake. I too prefer the newer style palm leaves and agree they would look good for roofs too. I'd also go with the older palm stern pieces, these new ones look too plain and smooth. Too add some new ideas, I really miss the feeling that this is a section of a much bigger island, for the old baseplate was green on all sides and the water looked more like a river to me - where crocs live. Though I have no idea how to achieve that with this style of shore - maybe skip the water and shore from the back and sides of the island? And I must say that I really miss the mouth on the statue, was such an iconic part of the old design. But all I can finish with is congratulations for such a great remake!

As I've mentioned before, I'm not a big fan of the big rounded slope for the sand shore even if it's the more LEGO way to do it. It really looks too unnatural of a shape to me. But I must admit that the first layer of plates under the slopes takes a lot of that away and looks much better for my taste! Would still like to see an entry doing the shore just with plates instead of these large slope pieces ... But I don't understand the two layers of water. That looks a bit funny. Otherwise a nice entry!

I like how only by switching the blacks into browns all these sets look instantly much better! For this entry my suggestion would be to skip the black brackets which add the unnecessary half plate height. Use some SNOT bricks in the construction of the logs and place the4x4 or even better 4x6 plate directly on them. As for the mast, I don't like the DBG mixel joint which pops out too much. Maybe do all the connecting plates in that color or figure out some other way to mount the sail ... which could also be smaller and use even just a cape or flags. The two plates thickness makes it huge compared to the raft.

Interesting approach with angled walls for this set, though I think that the walls are a bit too simple even for LEGO current standards. I'd suggest using a 6 long brick or plate for the base of each wall and get it angled on 2 studs (some Pythagoras stuff). One stud connection is flimsy and not suitable for such large objects. Also maybe try to make the walls look more like ruin instead of flat pillars. Throw in a headlight brick with a tile or some masonry bricks to add more diversity. Also the base looks too symmetrical especially with the leaves placement that should be the most organic thing.

This final version looks absolutely great! -
Nice entry. I'd suggest using cheese slopes instead of the 1x1 tiles in the wall, to catch the line of the wedges.

I do prefer it with the green plates! I'd also say, skip the tan plates in front of the cannon and connect the two greens instead. -

The new shape of the island is really great! Still missing some green on top around the build though ... (: -
This second version is far greater than the first attempt. The idea of using the vertical clips and fitting 5 guns in the width of four studs is excellent! Five studs would be too wide. I too would say skip the sand, it doesn't add anything to the set. As for the photo editing, it's hard to give advice about how to use a certain software from a very beginners perspective. I'd say it's better to use the images with no background, than with a not so good of an edit. Anyways the pros of building digitally is that renders give you a solid background. I usually use Photoshop to erase everything around my creation and make it white (:

[ENTRY] 6259 Broadside's Brig - Remake 2023

Although I do own the original, this remake came out quite unrecognizable to me. Only the positioning of the rooms is similar, but for my taste it misses a lot more yellow, an at least an angled wall. I did eventually come to the right set, but there really weren't that many to guess from. The build itself is not bad at all, but it could easily be an entry of your own designed set. And I do agree that the fasade is way too greebley. -

I think that editing your own topics as well as their titles should be in your powers. Edit this one for one entry and create another one for the other. As mentioned in another topic, I'd suggest to edit the first post with any updates and keep the previous versions in a spoiler tag (one image of each version would be enough for comparison). This way you make life easier for everyone for the voting phase. Also I did not mean that the island should be bigger, just that the size is too small for the use of the huge rounded slopes, or otherwise, those pieces are too big and too high. Would try using some plates and wedges. -
I'd go with the update of the first post. Maybe include previous versions in the spoilers tag if needed. That way when it comes to voting, people only need to look at the first post. Some might even miss the final version if it had to be searched for through the pages ...

As already mentioned this remake should be approached a bit differently. The original set itself is too small to effectively pull it of with the same size and color scheme and not make it look too similar. I like the way the whole cart is built with some slopes and more smoothed out but switching the black for either browns would look much better and more fitting for a reworked set.

Great reworks of some of the most iconic Pirates sets! I don't understand why combining them into one creation when they could easily be each an entry for themselves. Building digitally does have it's disadvantages, since the raft could really use the Silent Marry torn sail piece. I must say that the updated color scheme of the raft is spot on! My biggest complaint about the island is the sandy shore. Wasn't a big fan of the huge round slopes in the Barracuda Bay set and they fit even less here, for the size of the island is much smaller. Also maybe missing some green in the middle. And as mentioned the fireplace needs some more work. But the small roof is built nicely, the updated color scheme is also good and it really feels like a plausible set! -
[ENTRY] 2015 Pirates Shipwreck Defense Revisited
MstrOfPppts replied to eldiano's topic in Pirate MOCs
Expansion is OK, it could be a new set, that is modularly connectable to some other official sets. My suggestion would be to use some more LBG slopes in the mostly DBG rockwork to go more with the official sets. Also it'd be nice to first include the picture of what your set is supposed to be (your entry) and after that show, how it is connected to other sets. Since the rules want us to build an official set like creation, I also think that there are far too many minifigures included in the photos. And without the entry only image it is hard to tell which are from your entry and which are added by expansion of other sets. Otherwise a solid build I could easily see as an expansion to the official line! -
Commenting on the forums has been in decline lately so this is a nice idea. Good memories of the Tournament of Retribution, where comments were flying in from all sides! Will do my best to provide some feedback to the entries.

Would like to warm up for the commenting part of the contest! I must admit that Pirates is probably my next favorite LEGO theme to Star Wars, but I really don't lurk much around here for this part of the forum is too focused on the classic style. The inspirational threads are not that inspirational to me, since it seems that some of the creations have been stuck in the previous century. I would really prefer to see some high quality modern MOCs using all the advanced parts, techniques (even the 'illegal' ones) and licensed minifigure parts. Also I guess that the 'Build a classic set styled creation' rule is too vague and usually people taking more risk tend to have more chances for their creations being far more appealing. Anyway, just my $0.5 and looking forward for a more modernized competition around here in the future. Which does not mean I will not try to squeeze in an entry! Also, guess using fleshy heads in recreations is not an option? Asking for a friend, who happened to get rid of all his yellow figures - what a dumb thing to do (;

Awesome job man! Love the round shape of the cockpit as well as the snoted wings. Really one of my favorite entries and I'm not even a ship guy (:
-
Great work everyone entering this years May the 4th contest! Really like the new extended version of it and this years timeline is even better than last years. Though it didn't help me to squeeze in an entry. Family life takes a lot of time and some other projects have higher priorities. Might squeeze in a comment or two (; Really looking forward for the next years contest, hopefully I start organizing my time sooner!
