The Lego Movie 2 - The Second Part 2019 Set Discussion
Lyichir replied to Fenghuang0296's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Sorry, I thought that was what spoiler tags were for? I hadn't seen any previous warnings, so it won't happen again. -
A thing that's worth pointing out about the possibility of a "Lego Movie 3" is that the franchise's use of real live-action child actors offers both benefits and drawbacks to a long-term plan. The Lego Movie 2 coming out five real-world years after the first movie allowed made the passing of time for the child actors take center stage, allowing for the radical transformation of the Lego world in the movie from the first's orderly dystopia to the segmented world of the second (both allowing for Finn's interests to morph from childlike optimism to a grittier post-apocalyptic layout and for Bianca to graduate out of playing with Duplo alone and into playing with a wide variety of themes, much like Finn's play in the original). If they were to make a third movie, they would need to continue to take advantage of the aging of their actors if they want to carry on the strong metanarrative of the first two movies, and the amount of time it takes for such a sequel to come about would shape what kind of story structure is best suited for a sequel. Five years from now, Finn will be 18 years old and could plausibly be heading off to college, which could offer some Toy Story 3-esque opportunities. But because the adult voice actors are likely to be less subject to vocal changes than the live action actors are to changes in their appearance, it wouldn't necessarily be impossible to deliver a sequel ten, fifteen, even twenty years from now, by which point Finn and Bianca would both be AFOLs like the Man Upstairs was in the first movie. My point is that that movie would be necessarily different from the one we get if a new movie goes into production immediately and comes out within the next five years. The time table influences the metanarrative, which in turn influences the main narrative. Anyway, if they do opt to make a third movie to round it out as a trilogy, what do you think they'd call it? "The Lego Movie 3: The Final Step" has a nice ring to it, I think.

New cameos from the movie that I remember: IMDB helped me remember some of these. There were others in non-speaking roles that I forget. EDIT: Here's a few more I just remembered:

As for the titanium metallic raptors, they appear as the baby raptor mold in the Rexcelsior. It'll be interesting to see whether we get full-size ones. -
Real spoilers this time: I’ll be honest, I’m not sure why I just put “it’s good” in spoiler tags the first time, when it all but guaranteed that people wouldn’t read it if they hadn’t seen it themselves.

I just saw it.

What do you reckon the chances are of getting "Bat-Unikitty" in physical form at some point? Don't know if they'd extend the Batman license to the next series of Unikitty figures, but it wouldn't surprise me if that wound up as one of the Comic-Con exclusives as a one-off release.

The current "classic" theme is their theme for pure creative brick building—the sorts of sets that used to be classified as Basic, Free Style, or Bricks and More, among other categories. In other words, the "classic" Lego experience, prior to the introduction of discrete "themes" and brick sets designed to build one particular model. If I had to guess why they picked that name, I'd guess it was to make them more obvious for the whiny parents who always complain about today's sets only being designed to build "one thing" despite the existence of instruction-based kits for decades and the presence of unstructured brick sets for the entirety of Lego's existence.

If you prefer it you can probably flip the tires around so that the solid side faces out.
-
Well, also RC cars designed for outdoor play, but those were always sort of an oddity. They didn’t really fit that well into the “system”, relying on bulky prefab body pieces and being extremely susceptible to wear despite being designed for it.

I was starting to wonder when we’d start to get Lego Movie 2 reviews here on Eurobricks! I almost thought the reviewers here might be waiting to review the sets until after the movie for added context. This set’s alternate builds definitely use a small selection of the parts, especially compared to Emmet’s House/Rescue Rocket that finds a way to use all the parts in both builds. I don’t mind too much, but I do think they could have maybe upped the number of parts being used in the alt builds... maybe by adding some sort of small outpost, drone, or fortification to each, or at least augmenting the Plantimal with some of the other dark blue parts. It’s a nice set, but I might pass on this one since both figs and the dinosaur also come in the larger Rexplorer (along with a second differently colored raptor).

Rotate them in place a little and they should come out more easily. It’s a common problem with polycarbonate pieces but the shape of the flame piece should allow you to get enough leverage to twist and pull them apart, unlike harder to grip parts like lightsaber blades.

Ugh... no wonder I hadn't seen it, since I prefer to get my news from text instead of video discussion. No offense to them, but this whole segment was a little hard for me to sit through, a bit too "inside baseball" for my liking in the discussion of metrics and box office numbers. Still, if their overall impression was positive, that's a good thing. Since they talked a little about word of mouth possibly boosting the movie's numbers, I'm hoping the advance screenings this weekend result in a much more widely visible positive buzz that reminds average moviegoers that hey, this should be on your radar. The fact that they're making that move with those advance screenings does give me hope that they're confident enough in the quality of the movie that they'll bet on it doing so.

Any sources for this? It's a great sign, just would love to read their responses myself if possible. Also, here's a great article from IGN with Lord and Miller explaining the metanarrative of the first movie and how that carries into the sequel. I love the direction they seem to be taking things in and can't wait to see it for myself!

Wow, very cute! I actually really like the minimalistic texture it has going on—combined with the clean rounded shapes of the turrets and the tasteful color variation it feels almost like something out of a video game!
-
I would actually argue the opposite—it's actually gotten a lot easier to follow the unlicensed ones, since ever since Series 17 in 2017 the unlicensed series number has matched the last two digits of the year of its release. For me, that makes remembering which numbered series is due for this year much easier.

Yeah, I would say so. There are plenty of figures from the previous three Lego movies that didn't show up in sets, and if a figure were designed for the movie with the intention of being released I don't see why they wouldn't make space for it in the movie theme itself and opt for a different series instead (developed independently of the movie theme).

The Lego Movie 2 - The Second Part 2019 Set Discussion
Lyichir replied to Fenghuang0296's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I just don't see how that would work. A spacious enough interior for raptors and minifigures to fit comfortably, without feeling as cramped as the Rexplorer, would have to be huge, and would need a ton of support just to make it rigid enough to hold its shape with that big an interior. And the result would still feel to me like a paltry imitation of the ship's true scale, especially since if it only fit one or two full-size raptors and a vehicle alongside the minifigures then it would offer remarkably few features that the smaller and cheaper Rexplorer didn't already offer on its own. By contrast, this one seems like it will provide a better impression of the kind of mothership the vehicle is designed to be by shrinking down the scale to allow for more accurately scaled interiors and a larger number of figures, and has a grip/shooting function that complements the ship's fist-shaped form factor. -

Good point. For reference, see those microscale ships? Two of those are Emmet's Rescue Rocket and Rex's Rexplorer. The Rexcelsior is supposed to be HUGE, basically a mothership for Rex's entire fleet. -

The Lego Movie 2 - The Second Part 2019 Set Discussion

I can't imagine the space to put your arm in would have otherwise been usable for an interior anyway, considering that space is in the core of the build, well-removed from any surfaces that could be removed or opened to allow access. This thing is big, and from the looks of it there's plenty of room on the sides for a microscale interior (certainly enough of one to display the nanofigures). -
I think the price increases may have another factor—to temper demand. I remember the earliest few series selling out incredibly quickly, to the degree that they would be sold out months before another series became available. The price hikes have helped to mediate that, with the availability becoming more stable (series don’t tend to sell out before the subsequent one becomes available, at which point remaining stock of the earlier series can be clearances). This benefits Lego because when the demand outstrips the supply, the portion of that demand that goes unfulfilled doesn’t bring in any profit.

I'm not an expert on German trademark law but here in the United States it is common for trademark holders to send cease-and-desist letters directly to perceived offenders to attempt to resolve a conflict without having to resort to legal action that could cost both parties significant amounts of money. Receiving a letter like that shouldn't necessitate completely baseless accusations of censorship. As for the German court case you're referring to, as far as I'm aware that case regarded the three-dimensional shape of the brick (which was held to have a merely technical function that could not be protected), not the two-dimensional image of the brick (which Lego still claims trademark protection of). Whether that claim is legitimate is above my pay grade to decide but in the absence of a court decision claiming otherwise it does not surprise me that Lego's legal team would take action to defend it.
-
So he tried to trademark his logo that used a Lego brick-like design to use on merchandise? And then blamed Lego's legal response on trying to censor his opinions? Color me surprised. There are tons of critical Lego reviewers out there who get by just fine, without a hint of legal trouble from Lego. But Lego's legal team is incredibly vigilant about protecting their trademarks. To turn that into a conspiracy theory about Lego trying to silence their critics strikes me as incredibly slimy, not to mention awfully self-centered.

While I agree that not every IP needs more than one series, I would expect that this movie will easily be able to provide enough figs to potentially justify a second series, especially considering that the Oz figs prove that Lego is willing to entertain the idea of including cameos from other IPs in the series. In any case, my point was that if we were going to get that Fox Suit Girl in a CMF I would sooner expect it to be one associated with the movie than one that's unrelated. That's not to say that there WILL be a second series, but rather that if there's not then I would expect the figure to either not show up at all (stranger things have happened) or show up as part of some other non-CMF set.
