The Lego Movie 2 - The Second Part 2019 Set Discussion
Lyichir replied to Fenghuang0296's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Probably because they're not literally being paid by sponsors to do so? Not to mention a 10 or more episode TV series requires a heck of a lot more animation than these commercials, and in fact runs for much longer than any of the full movies. I would not be surprised if the production timeline is much different as well. EDIT: Anyway, big news! An official Lego News video from the Lego Lab YouTube channel features more pics of the Rexcelsior, which should put any fears of a paltry interior to rest: -
As @Pdaitabird suggested at the beginning of the thread, it's so that people who are browsing through the recent activity page don't get bombarded with spoilers despite not specifically choosing to visit this topic. Anyway, after my first rewatch I'm much more confident in my judgment of this one as on-par with the first one. Both of them are not only incredibly funny but also good at making me tear up at the most emotional moments.

Because of the fluorescence I personally see the most difference in low-light conditions (where it retains its hue and visibility slightly better than your average color), or under a blacklight (where the effect is dramatically amplified). But really, apart from that the main "special" thing about it is that it's a new color that occupies a red-orange part of the color scheme that few other modern colors occupy.

The Lego Movie 2 - The Second Part 2019 Set Discussion
Lyichir replied to Fenghuang0296's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I feel bad because I was just trying to be helpful and you tried to make me out to be lording it over everybody else because I'd seen the movie. That's not fair, it wasn't my intention, and I'm sorry. I've put the offending part of the original post in spoiler tags. But if we're going to take a hard line on spoiler tagging discussion of whether or not purported "leaks" appear in the movie or not, then I feel that should be applied to all discussion of those leaks. It's hard for me to remember what needs spoiler tagging and what doesn't if everyone else is discussing them with no concern over whether they're a spoiler or not. -
The Lego Movie 2 - The Second Part 2019 Set Discussion

Hey, could you maybe drop the attitude? I'm getting exceptionally tired of you lashing out at my sister and I. I don't know where you got this chip on your shoulder but it's getting really old really fast. I already apologized. I could delete the contents of that post if that makes you happy. But frankly, when people were just blindly assuming that those different versions of the characters were unseen versions from the movie, not one person was complaining about being spoiled by THAT. Only when I helpfully tried to point out that they seemed like unused prototypes did anybody make a fuss about it. -

I don't know about that—these days prototypes can get 3D printed and even painted without the full expense of putting them into mass production. It's possible that these shoulders might have been planned for something else, or conversely, might now be used on something different despite not appearing in the movie (since, after all, no need to waste the design if it ends up being useful for something else). But it's wrong to assume that because a part looks real that that means it will be coming in sets, especially when it is shown in an exhibition that extensively features unfinished concept models and designs. -
This is really cute! A shame though that the suspension and steering are more display-oriented than play oriented. Just my preference—I understand how impractical it would be to implement independent four-wheel suspension and steering at such a compact scale.

The Lego Movie 2 - The Second Part 2019 Set Discussion

*shrug* There's no guarantee that any figs will use them at all. The fact that they were developed for a concept model doesn't mean they'll end up in sets—there are most likely countless prototype parts Lego has abandoned due to either refining them, replacing them, or just ending up deciding that they aren't necessary after all. Wouldn't it have been spoilers either way? That's why I decided it didn't merit a spoiler tag. I apologize if it lessened your enjoyment of the movie... -
The Lego Movie 2 - The Second Part 2019 Set Discussion
Lyichir replied to Fenghuang0296's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Almost all of the Lego Movie concept models are designed by Lego designers with the idea that they could become sets. That doesn't mean they all will, or that being designed like sets means that they will be released as one. There are countless concepts from the first movie that didn't become sets, and in some cases didn't even end up appearing in the movie itself. -
Also worth keeping in mind—one of the reasons Lego introduced Space sets in the first place was because of a surging interest in space and sci-fi, in no small part thanks to movies LIKE Star Wars. How many kids bought Classic Space sets in part because it was the closest thing Lego had to Star Wars at the time? I reckon it was probably a lot.

The Future of Lego Space. (opinions, ideas, discussion)
Lyichir replied to Trekkie99's topic in LEGO Sci-Fi
I mean, I cared about it 20 years ago when it was already 20 years old, after my dad showed it to me. Call that "pushing" if you like, but parents share movies they liked with their children all the time. And the presence of modern Star Wars movies creates plenty of opportunity for kids to get into the franchise of their own volition, even moreso than when I was a kid watching the movies with the prequels still several years away. And I could turn that back around on you—how many kids do you think would care about the also 40-year-old Classic Space theme if they weren't introduced to it through their parents or through modern media featuring it like The Lego Movie? It's the same kind of nostalgia at work, just on a much, much smaller scale than Star Wars.- 991 replies

The Future of Lego Space. (opinions, ideas, discussion)
Lyichir replied to Trekkie99's topic in LEGO Sci-Fi
The Creator Expert buildings are actually an example I was thinking about—designers of the modulars have cited the plethora of amazing fan designs as one reason why recent buildings have tended toward multiple types of businesses sharing a roof and a baseplate, since it helps them to stand apart from the single-purpose banks, barbershops, pool halls, flower shops, and so forth that fans have already designed. Call me cynical but my experience with the adult Lego fan community has generally been one where they are perhaps one of the hardest markets of Lego fans to satisfy. That's the difference between redoing Star Wars ships umpteen times and doing the same for classic space. The former is done primarily to entice new child fans who recognize the ships from the movie but haven't gotten a chance to get their own versions. The latter wouldn't do that—the sole benefit of bringing back Classic Space instead of doing a new sort of space theme would be to entice nostalgic adults, a much more challenging proposition since you'd be competing both with the fan community's talented creations as well as the rose-tinted recollections older fans have of their childhood favorite themes.- 991 replies

The Future of Lego Space. (opinions, ideas, discussion)
Lyichir replied to Trekkie99's topic in LEGO Sci-Fi
This actually makes me think of another possible reason why Lego might not opt for an updated Classic Space theme—that it has already been done so well so many times by AFOLs that it would be that much harder for a Lego-designed take on it to measure up in the eyes of all fans. It's very possible that something more novel that doesn't invite direct comparisons to past AFOL MOCs might be received more favorably overall than a theme that has already had so many different takes on it over the years. I know that I was personally surprised by how the reaction to the Benny's Spaceship set from the first Lego movie among Classic Space fans included not just strong positive reactions but also a fair number of negative reactions from people who felt that its weaponry, or its use of dark grey, or its use of curved elements instead of just sharp angles, made it seem false or inauthentic to the original theme.- 991 replies

Quote from... who? Meaning what exactly? I haven't seen any indication that either Star Wars or Lego Star Wars is significantly underperforming compared to previous non-movie years. It's still among the top-selling themes, not even limited to just licensed themes. I won't argue with the fact that a new Space theme could potentially sell well. But selling better than Lego Star Wars is a tall order for both licensed themes and original themes—and Lego would be foolish to even aspire to that with a Space theme, since they have more to lose than to gain by cannibalizing sales from their longest-running and most successful licensed theme.

REVIEW: 71023 LEGO Minifigures - The LEGO Movie 2 Series
Lyichir replied to WhiteFang's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Proves that they can, not that they could. The fact that some of their European factories have recently expanded enough to satisfy the global demand for CMFs doesn't mean that they had that capacity to do so when the series was first starting out. (also quality has improved over the years for CMFs even when they were still being produced in China and has very little to do with the country of origin but go off I guess) -
Good question! The Porsche is definitely precedent for trying to recreate the real-life building process for the vehicle in the building process of the set. But as a motorized, remote controlled vehicle i'm not sure whether that'd be more or less practical than designing the build process from scratch.

[ spoiler ] at the start of the spoiler tag [ /spoiler ] at the end of the spoiler tag But without the spaces inside the brackets. On desktop browsers, at least, there's also an eye symbol above the text entry field (beside the smileys) that will automatically add spoiler tags for you.

It seems like the reason they've opted for the new design for the bottom is to make it better suited for what has become one of its primary uses—being used alongside tiles to create a semi-secure attachment between sections of a build (like the floors of a modular building). The new style has more clutch power on the bottom so that when you remove a section from on top, this part is less likely to come off with it. And the groove makes it blend in more when used alongside other styles of tile or jumper plate.

BrickHeadz 2019 - Rumours, Speculation and Discussion
Lyichir replied to Anonknee Muss's topic in LEGO Licensed
Nice! What color is that for Sweet Mayhem's wings, though? Looks almost like you used Phosphorescent Green/Glow in the Dark Trans, when I'm pretty sure the actual parts are Trans. Light Blue with Glitter (which might not be available on Stud.io, but regular Trans. Light Blue would be a better substitute).- 238 replies

The Lego Movie 2 - The Second Part 2019 Set Discussion
Lyichir replied to Fenghuang0296's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Worth mentioning that these are not factory leaks, they're on display at the Lego House alongside both various physical props for the movie as well as concept designs. As such, while it's certainly possible (and in some cases, like Balthazar and the new versions of Benny, Batman, and Metalbeard, highly probable) that they are designed to appear in sets, it shouldn't be taken for granted that all of the figures appearing here in physical form means that they will be released in sets. In any case, loving a bunch of these—lots of fun Systar System animals, cool Apocalypseburg citizens including a post-apoc version of Marsha Queen of the Mermaids, and great Systar System variants of the heroes.
