Wishlist: Future Star Wars Sets and Minifigures
Kim-Kwang-Seok replied to MKJoshA's topic in LEGO Star Wars
The linked brick set article compares actual minifigscale with the measurements of the official sets. Some are interestingly still too small (Slave I or UCS Sandcrawler; half the size even!) but probably perfect size for a Lego set. It's interesting though how many sets are just way out of proportions (meaning too big). Like the current - sized down - X-Wing is better to scale then the oversized predecessors. Whether they use new pieces or better techniques they surely should and could do better when dealing with Snowspeeders and other sets. Of course some will always be oversized due to minifig-proportions but as recent and older sets show: less pieces can produce a smaller set with better scale, more playability and probably still a certain level of stability. https://brickset.com/article/62976/minifigure-scale-star-wars-vehicles -
To me, minifig hands were always impossible to use for figures. And as i have so many spares I'd like to use them but yeah, they look horrible if attached to a gun or something

hachiroku has posted an amazing Bad Batch MOC that doesn't look like it would be too hard to build or using hard-2-find pieces. I think it I even see a bunch of pieces that could be reused from the official version. Not too big of a fan ot the BB myself but since people were asking a lot about better versions of the ship I leave his building tutorial here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3Pr37Isai8 -
What's your recent LEGO Star Wars Purchase?
Kim-Kwang-Seok replied to KimT's topic in LEGO Star Wars
I was getting the Mando Starfighter I scrapped half of the the wings away (front); looks much better and useful like that to be honeset. Also this way - with some parts orders - I'll be able to make it studless like all my other mod's So far it reminds me of the modified U-Wing version of Saw Gurerrera. comparing the original build to the last white Mando ship - the figs this time are a treat, but the set doesn't hold up against it's predecessor. The colour scheme is outstanding but the simpler build of the old set was way cleaner, had less gaps and working play features. It's really interesting TLG even scraps the small storage space units at the backs of ships nowdays. I am all about looks but it's an interesting choice of Lego to be all about stability and cool parts integration while a more simplified (and still stable) build could give more action. -
LEGO Ninjago 2021
Kim-Kwang-Seok replied to Driver Brandon Grumman's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
It's really a miss that Ninjago doesn't have more budget for figures. As far as I calculated correctly, they have slightly less budget but still there's a very good amount of new prints. As they have to divide between new seasons and Legacy though, both suffer significantly. Like the only inhabitants of seabound were the same water snakes. I think it would have been really cool to get more diverse unterwater figures (even just newly printed creature figures like sharks/fish would have been fine). ...and to get new figures for Legacy. The only pull for me are really just the great builds. I could make an army of Legacy Jay, Kai and Zane figures. Next to different ninja outfits, there's so many cool figures we could have gotten. I get the problem; not enough budget for prints - but I really hope next year, they kick out all the Legacy figures. 3 years is enough.. -

I guess it's about from what angle you view this. Take your example; the ofsprey: like many other sets did - they cancell it because it could destroy a certain image they want to keep? Is the image important for making profit or because of the values? I am quite happy with the company actually but at the end of the day they'll do what they need to do to make enough money. If some artsy-people up there can do some nice and social stuff and if they can combine this with marketing and "family values" or something like this, it's fine. But I've worked in enough companies that went broke to see which path they go when they are not the top dog anymore - or threatened to not be. hint: it's a dirty path. Paper wasn't purchased anymore at the local recyceling company but shipped from eastern european companies with horrible wages for their workers. Again, this ain't about shaming Lego. It's a system we live in and of course they're gonna give us the Ahsoka-Maul set for 20€ (more worth 15) because they know people will buy it. I am fine with that as I don't need to buy if I don't want. I will be happy whenever they (for whatever reason) don't make that 25% increase but I won't expect or complain too much if they do, because they are a business not a social club. Interestingly enough bits and pieces of that community do gain a certain attention. I don't know the answer but I'm sure some things can be done. Mostly I think an exchange of information is nice - I feel also like this has been slightly improved over the last 2 years. Like designers explaining certain reasons for certain choices which the community here was unaware of. about the MOC's: I think we gotta respect how far the parts production has come just in the last 5 years or so, compared to how blocky it was before. But still, Lego has a long way to go - other competitors have way more to offer in terms of mixed colours, studeless pieces and so on. I'm just thinking of how the inverted sloap pieces were a game changer. I'm sure comming developements will make easy MOC's and mods easier. -

of course a new cockpit would be important and really necessary. I'd argue they have (as for hairpieces) better molds already. But Lego is a company and you can think of it from a companys perspective: take the old design (it sold well), put some more stability, some new sleek pieces, updated figs and - voila; you got yourself a new set. It's horrible, I know. But why do people here even look at it? It's produced for some kids who don't own the previous 6 but probably not a single version of the vehicle. For some sets they can afford to make new molds and for some they don't. Because they have to invest in other things - like other new molds and high production quality for their in house themes (which makes sense as they make more money of them due to the lack of licence fee). As a designer you just sit there and someone will tell you: you have this, now design this. It's a company but for some reason people here act (often) like it's charity or fanservice. Just don't buy the set and you save some money anyway? And I'd argue many times there are actual improvements - the latest snowspeeders were becomming thicer and more stable - I don't care about this but for others this may be important. I've heard this a lot about the last 3 landspeeders: I think actually almost every version was a big step up from the version before. At least the last one was different enough; built up engines, better seats, overal waay better build! I would argue there's a middle ground: The Razor Crest had a good structure but I thought it was completely messy. So I ordered a lot of parts - mostly light grey plates - to make it completely studless. Maybe I spent about 10$, maybe a bit more. But now I have a much better looking ship. Would I have liked Lego to make sets with better colours and less studs? For sure! But it wasn't that hard to mod the set in the right direction. And if you have some sets already you may be even able to build some MOC's almost completely out of your own collection. I don't buy that much Lego but even I can do that. I think starting a dialogue with the company and demanding sleeker, more colour consistant sets, a better way to get old sets and parts would be very welcome to both companies. Otherwise many costumers will defacto turn to different brands. But as long as there is so much hatetalk (not talking about you guys and gals) and moralisation (ok this I read a lot here) I rear the AFOL community appears like a joke. Lego is a company within capitalism; they have no reason to act moral but every reason to act immoral. -

SW is like CITY - they produce what works. And why making a new windscreen if the old one still sells? I think especially the windscreen is horrible but not to mention even how oversized they are ...again I think those sets are not for the collectors. I always find it weird so many people here actually consider buying most of the sets. It makes much more sense to me to get some parts and make a great MOC. -
LEGO Ninjago 2021

I think the Legacy Bounty is the best build so far. The Movie Bounty may be more majestic but it was waayy more "stubby" with super unrealistic proportions. Should have been at least a third longer to look realistic. Colours were good but much more off and sails were just a joke and not worthy of that teriffic ship. The Legacy Bounty could be a bit longer as well but it works better in my opinion and overall its a more "advanced" and a clean build - which doesn't matter to me as I modded any non-fitting colour out anyway, as in all of my 5 Bountys When talking about the overall looks, I only improved some things at the "front deck" (which was surprisingly easy) and put plates under the technic mechanism at the bottom of the ship (easy cheasy to cover up). I think the looks work out very well. From the distance you wouldn't see any difference to mine and the official one. My other Bountys are modded so strong, that you could almost call them a MOC. I think this is one of 3 Lego sets were I was actually pretty fine with how it looked officially. Some guests asked me why there's a house on the boat (meaning the dojo) - but actually this depiction is pretty close to these kind of ships (some of them were looking like a weird ship hull with a huge asian house on it). The sails - like in the show - are more fantasy but accurate to the show version and a good size + very good quality. So the first good sails so far! I still think of making new sails for the Movie Bounty and the possession one as they are either too small or really bad plastic-quality. The wings I think are really huge (the biggest of any Bounty so far) but especially if put on a stand it works. But if you like to make them even bigger, I'm sure it's easy to mod If I had to only choose from all my Lego sets only one - I'd probably take this one. I got it on sale a month after release (like 90$) but honestly I wouldn't have minded the full price. Just the figures are boring. When I manage to make some flicr thingy - I'll upload pictures of my fleet -

Do you think designers (aka artists) really wanna do the same type of snowspeeder plus 4 new parts and some minor improvemenets again? I figure it's just what they are allowed and expected of to do: a vehicle that sells always, that has certain features and a certain elegance - therefore it must also keep this size (aka oversized and more expensive). Figures I guess are self explainatory: Luke, Luke, Luke, Han, Stormtroopers. ..it's a shame they barely do any Leia or Padme - but also there I assume there are reasons. Witth the relaunch of Harry Potter a few years ago designers had the luxury to put in a random hufflepuff student. With SW they gave us the old General guy (Dondnovo or something) from the rebellion in the X-Wing set - that's already something. Do you think this is for the general audience or already fan service for the hardcore collectors? I think most sets just aren't for "us" which isn't also too bad. I wouldn't have money to get any rerelease -

let's hope because I have no idea where it can go. Either due to leaks or our speculation - the last few waves we were pretty close to the actual content. People guessed after gaming and castle diving that we'd get island and Atlantis stuff. They also guessed Nya being the focus character and even her becoming the water dragon. But for the next wave I have no clue what scenario they could do. To me I'd think they could so something related with Legacy - like merging legacy with the current seasons. Time travel, old villains returning? I'd love for them to do something with the first legacy reimagined short. -

of course also here: I think it's a great set. With 2 times more parts each building could have been better of course but with all the restraints Lego did a phantastic job (only the figures I find just bad; *cough Lex Lucius Luther Malfox; no leg printing for Lockhart). ..Just I am used to asian architecture or something more "different" - therefore these kind of buildings are bland to me while the next D2C is something unique - like the giant figures or nanoscale Hogwarts. It brings something new to Lego and does a very good job while the sud-painting-artpieces are more controversial. I'll sell my modded (with rocks and so on) great hall - but seeing this, I'd want to also get the new one for combining them. Great find, great build! -
Unpopular Opinions about LEGO
Kim-Kwang-Seok replied to Lego David's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Some of what you say is a myth until proven otherwise - or at least until given some more substance. I am disgusted by the empty PR empire of Disney but people (not saying you but more describing a general phenomenon) take all their frustration and bigoted views to express: the mouse is greedy, Kathlyin Kennedy is the devil, etc. Im not saying she isn't a horrible corporate bloodsucker but what's the the difference to all the other (mostly men) money-makers? George Lucas was being greedy back in the 80's and made a junk ship like the Falcon into something it never was (fastest ship) or changing ugly reptilians into Ewoks for children, because he wanted to have some of that sweet money. SW was always greedy. Welcome to capitalism, brother. Now back in the first years of Lego SW, sets often had less pieces than today. BUT: there were bigger parts, overall bigger sets and more functions. Now my old Jango Slave I had many functions and cool interior - just it was also falling apart, as soon as you pick it up and it was well - blocky. Todays sets have even more smaller parts and are quite detailed, more structurally stable - but also more expensive and include less play functions. Remember the 1st Republic Gunship, which could turn into a mobile base? Or all the "split" functions for so many ships. Just think of how many parts Lego had 10 years ago and how many they developed in the last 5 years to make better sets. Not to mention the quality of figures. This is one positive side of the coin - the other is that we got a lot of insanely oversized ships that are sometimes even worse depictions than former sets - the Solo Tie Fighter would be the worst of them I'd say: practically no play functions other than shooting and sitting one figure, super expensive and not accurate in any way. Probably the both of us would agree that many re-releases are mostly the same structure (X-Wing I'd say) and still not accurate despide becoming more and more expensive. I think the current year is a turn in the right direction - but also in that regard the outcry in this forum was huge (against the sets). Still, I am convinced Lego can make affordable smaller sets like the current Slave 1, that look BETTER (or at least more accurate) than more expensive versions, while keeping a similar amount of interior and play functions. Of course there is people who may prefer the bigger sets - the question is though if Lego can keep making money like that. I think the current strategy (like with the X-Wing, Slave I and Tie Fighter) will lead to more costumers. Im not saying that I'm happy with everything, but overall we could appreciate how far parts developement was going in the last 5 years. And yeah, as long as oversized and super expensive X-Wings and snowspeeders are purchased - TLG will keep on making them. Another solution would be actual chibbi sets - there's great designs of the Razor Crest or other vehicles that would be much more affordable. Micro fighters are not even so far away from that. ...and midi-scale ships: we got two phenomenal ships with an ISD, the Nebulon and a Falcon - I hope there will be more because this way you could do the exterior justice, while also making something affordable (I would not have money or space for a single UCS ship). ...sorry for rambling. -
do you have pictures? I am thinking currently to buy some parts from bricks and pieces to build a version in some really weird colour - like purple. I love the current, slightly taller, version so much that I'd like to give it a sister.

I found myself pleasantly surprised by the current Ahsoka figure - but as I still have dual molded white-orange arms, I created a "Gandalf-style" Ahsoka (Rebels timeskip) with some Ninjago torsos, while her actual body parts are used to make a Mandalorian warrior. There's several dark blue arms with gold printing or yellow arms with dark blue or gold printing on them that fit. I also think the plain silver helmet or Mando fits really well. ...so another Mandalorian warrior. As soon as I manage to use some flickr or whatever I post them here

I have to find the pieces again and build it. Except for those weird battle pack obscuruties I build everything usually before putting apart again But yeah - looking at the pictures, a stand would have been cooler; comparable to the one for the classic Batman car. Still a nice throwback - back in the days I loved getting those side builds -

Oh there was a stand As I always change some things/mostly colours while building, I didn't think of the extra parts. I think the size really works - and you have about as much interior as in all other Slave I's Ironicaly Jango's Slave I (which I owned as a child) had the most interior yet. -

Who know's what kind of set makes sense on the market. Lego looks like they wanna go away from traditional sets - maybe they are wrong but maybe we are a minority here and for many collectors space has run out and they won't get any more 300€ builds with whatever 20 figures. This set or the nanoscale Hogwarts was pulling many of my friends who never purchased any Lego sets ever. So maybe it's a gamble by Lego to reach a different audience or maybe it's a safe thing. I think it looks phenomenal and much more interesting than the bland DA. -
So I looked at the sets due to 50% sale but since I spend more money (too many good sets) for Lego than in the last 3 years I didn't even want anything. ...but Smyths Toys has an offer to get a beatbox of your choice for free with a purchase of 20€. It's a crazy good offer. I took the golden Robot - and noticed the hands are silver - is this a first? So far hands were always light or dark grey instead of being silver?!

well people can argue and speculate. Surely I do the same - like speculating that maybe more prequel fans are quite vocal/on certain internet plattforms, prefer more affordable sets with some figs from a cartoon. Not saying there's anything wrong or that this is correct. It's just speculation. Maybe (and hopefully) the Gunship will be a huge hit despite these reasons or because my speculation is wrong.
