  1. When I saw your profile pic and the title, my first thought was "Tourist Trophy!" Cool model. I think you did quite well at that scale. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the last cancellation of the races (2000?) due to foot-and-mouth disease? Kinda like now... I'll just have to watch "The Greatest Show on Earth" again.
  2. I just had to use them!! @Brickander Brickumnus It's definitely the . The is an old one.
  3. Ha! Fun progression of the minifigs. I had to look closely to spot the differences in their clothing. #epicbeards
  4. Beautiful remake. I have to look closely to spot the differences, but some of the newer vegetation does stand out pretty good. And it's great that your little one can play with your builds. And yes, those big cats are just cool. "Because they can" is, like, the best reason ever for fighting a war, mannnn...
  5. This blacksmith is my favorite of your land builds, Professor. The whole thing is very artfully done. It is nice and clean looking while also looking appropriately busy. And those bellows are really nice. Excellent work.
  6. @gatorzip02 "Honey, I shrunk the ship!" That would be right at home in a pirate comic/cartoon.
  7. Is new? And have the & always been there? I always got my thumb-ups from the main list.
  8. Interesting. I don't put much thought into the minifigs and wouldn't have known on my own. The Cross Bone "Clipper" might be one of the least favored of the old classic vessels, but it's still a neat set. Pity more small ones weren't available to use as merchants a la ITP trade ship, but then... you can't have everything...
  9. I wanted to expand my prior thoughts, quoted above, and after the most hectic workday in months I am just now able to do that. I hope I don't sound really negative about IDEAS. In general I think it works well. I just wish this particular project's submission had been better. My thoughts have completely flipped on this set: The designer's comments make it obvious that he wanted more color. Perhaps he decided this after completing and submitting the design. At any rate, LEGO obliged him with the classic colors. There were always going to be significant ship parts in the set, and combined with classic colors, lots of minifigs, and a high price tag, it just seems like a logical next step to include the full ship in such a large set -- especially with fans of the Pirates theme clamoring for a significant anniversary release of some type (even though technically it missed the anniversart timeline...) The final design seems like a great way to bring all this together. I'm tempted to call it brilliant, but it mostly strikes me as logical. Due to its color confusion, the submission, on the other hand, strikes me as -- how may I politely say this -- something less than brilliant, and I'll leave it at that. I was initially disappointed by the final design, but upon learning the truth of the designer's actual color preferences, I think TLG hit a home run -- knocked it out of the park, so to speak. I suspect that this set will go down in history as one of the Pirates fans' top picks.
  10. I just realized you and I signed up for Eurobricks on the exact same day. I never met Chucky Boy. Is he still around? Someone once told me that he could cut through a knife with hot butter, so... what can Redbeard do???? It's also been a while since I uploaded to Lego Ideas... like never...
  11. Wow. Just... wow. So he actually did intend for this set to be colorful and he never had any real intention of the set becoming a "big brown pile" despite the fact that he submit it as such... It sounds like the classic pirate colors were something he did want included to some degree... but he "forgot" them in some way -- either forgot what they were, or just forgot to include them? I can't quite tell from those comments. Both seem a bit... odd, frankly. Wow. On the one hand I feel rather duped. On the other hand I just don't care anymore. Which is to say, IDGA* In the past I never looked at or supported IDEAS submissions, but I always looked at the final sets out of curiosity, even though I rarely had an interest in them. I'm going back to my old approach. It is a neat program after all, and it's fun to look over finished designs. As for the process of getting there? Well... if I can't honestly know how to interpret the visuals -- if I can't really, truly know if I am properly comprehending the purpose of the design in front of me -- I think I'm done. Subjugate the creative light of my soul to that corporate prism? No, thanks.
  12. Price-wise my "Pirates Bay" was a giant bag of cereal pearl gold from BrickLink. I had a bowl-full. It was extraordinary.
  13. Could it happen? Asking about the possibility? Here is the full statement I quoted above: If the LEGO Group releases follow-up products based on the same original concept or licensed property, we produce them ourselves. If we produce your product idea, it is possible the LEGO Group could consider your set as a starting point for a new playtheme, or release additional sets based on the same license. Any follow-up products based on the same concept or licensed property will be developed internally at the LEGO Group and independent from LEGO Ideas. We do not credit or compensate LEGO Ideas members for follow-up products. Read more in Prizes and Rewards. And: There is a possibility your product idea and our own new product development will unintentionally overlap. Great minds think alike! If you get an idea for a new LEGO set, it’s possible our team of designers has had a similar idea on their own. If the LEGO Group introduces a product similar to an idea submitted on LEGO Ideas, you understand and acknowledge that any coincidence is unintentional and release the LEGO Group against any claims of infringement. The site plainly says follow up material is possible without offering any specifics. I take this to mean that yes, it's technically possible for a set to revive a theme, although I'm guessing the likelihood of that happening is pretty poor. Do I expect it in the case of Pirates? Heyww naww. They know the market pretty well and seem to have a schedule of every so many years for the theme. Apparently there isn't as consistent of a market as there is for, say, Ess-Dubya. Agreed. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the only scenario I'm familiar with has been getting the singular Ideas sets and nothing more. Your last paragraph pretty well echoes some of what's on the Ideas site. Agreed.
  14. From the IDEAS website: If the LEGO Group releases follow-up products based on the same original concept or licensed property, we produce them ourselves. That sounds like an answer of "Yes" to the title question.
  15. From the Ideas website: We accept ideas for LEGO construction toys using currently available LEGO bricks Must've updated their policy recently...
  16. The names. I believe you meant LOUDMARY (Alternately, for, like, left-handed fans, the Silent MaryJane, mannnnnnn.) Perhaps the Skoal, I Spoon 'er And maybe the Armada Sip of Flagons How about Caribbean Flippers Or The Quack Earl Maybe the Rent-a-day Bummer And finally It Sounds Like Someone Needs To Just Give It Up Already.
  17. It's a beautiful MOC, but... I think I'll spare myself on this one. All eleventeen gazillion tall ships sailing Ideas have been sunk one way or another. A new Barracuda is already prowling the seas... a Creator ship is already in the "docks" ... And TLG doesn't have a big "dockyard." But I will definitely use the color scheme as a reference.
  18. And here I was slightly disappointed not to have seen an official EB April Fool's joke (and slightly relieved, after the last couple fell flatter than Kyrie Irving's world). I don't know whether to or
  19. With that, I want to apologize to@Medzomorak for participating in this conversation.
  20. Isn't this the crux of the whole discussion: some people wanted something fairly specific while others simply wanted a good pirates set, period? Umm... yeah, I think it's fair to assume they were going for the shallow lagoon look, yes. (Maybe that's why they wrecked their ship -- these LEGO pirates are kinda known for that.) While a multi-colored blue, trans-blue, clear base would've been cool, I wonder if perhaps it just might have increased the cost? But then I'm no set designer. I didn't realize at the time of the submission that so many voters did, in fact, see this as just a big brown pile. That's cool.
  21. Thanks. For anyone who wanted the drab, muted color scheme, it makes a bit of a visual difference. But dumb. Of course. That drab, muted color scheme didn't feature much in the way of accent colors, and being rather consistent throughout, didn't have a lot of vibrant focal points. Introduce one or two accents, even in small amounts, and they really stand out. Like dandelions on a lawn, it's just about impossible to not see them. For fans of the muted colors, this does somewhat "corrupt" (to borrow from you) the look. Purely a matter of preference. Edit: I apologize for the double-post. The editor wouldn't accept the quotes for some reason.
  22. The best submissions, if I may politely say so, make use of current production parts or temporarily discontinued parts (in this case, theme-specific items like tricorns, bicorns, etc) that could easily be put back into production. The big baseplate was realistically wishful thinking on the part of the designer, and it was obvious from the start that it would demand a thorough rework on the part of the eventual set desig
