  1. Maybe the Sean Kenney version here: http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/156919 ? Pretty incredible
  2. Cant wait to see the next set of images lightningtiger, this is looking great! You really captured the feel of how I picture historic deco or moderne gas stations (like the links below) http://www.20th.ch/Dansk_Esso_service_station_small.jpg http://www.peachridgeglass.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/texacogas.jpg
  3. Gongoro73, great photoshop work! I think the enlarged dark brick version of Al's 'XXX' looks much more realistic than the original model and very similar to the type of NYC building I imagine this set was based on - a quick 'stroll' on google streetview (see two links below) results in lots of images of real life buildings that are very similar to your version. I cant wait to see the mods everyone makes to this set - I think, like the PS, the DO will lend itself very well to all sorts of mods (different color bricks, more height, different commercial businesses/storefronts, etc) that help make modular streets unique and interesting. https://goo.gl/maps/EBfoV https://goo.gl/maps/sERDu
  4. Just noticed this MOC from 2012: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=72469 Incredible how similar the new Lego DO is to it!
  5. Finnbricker, looks great! Really like the floor tile, water cooler, and wall/protection for the tellers
  6. LegoSjaak - I had the same concern! Luckily the top is deep enough for 48 studs so I plan to put the PS halves around the corners (one half behind GE, the other behind PC) to make room for one more 32x32 along the front. That should "buy" me one more year before I need more storage...
  7. I got the IKEA Hemnes (inexpensive but made of solid pine so pretty sturdy) and then used mirror clips to attach an acrylic sheet (plexiglass) to the front for protection (main goal was baby-proofing). The back is open and the mirror clips are removable so its still easy enough to get inside to make changes. See pic below:
  8. Would be interesting if Lego "unbundled" the interior and exterior on future modulars - ie put all the model parts and money into exterior mass and detail then sell a seperate "furnishing" set. That set could be inexpensive and include details like furniture and wall art (could be minimal like the upcoming Lego movie couch set or more involved like the ideas Big Bang Theory set). Then people would have the option of if and when buy interiors and Lego could maintain "grand" exteriors at the usual modular price range.
  9. While I'm a big fan of this set, I am torn on the trade offs between interior and exterior. it does seem like the interior is very interesting here at the expense of a bit plain or cartoony facade...but real life buildings do have the same trade offs, often for similar reasons ($). Like this set, many real city buildings have a base, middle, and top where decoration happens at the base and top but not middle. Also, the part of town where detectives and pool halls can afford the rent often have more utilitarian style buildings. A 32x32 three or four story modular with lots of interior and exterior detail would be great but probably also well over $200 - with so many modulars now you can see the trade offs chosen in each one (interior details, exterior details, or mass/height). For what it's worth, I still like the interior/exterior balance struck with the Fire Brigade but realize using only two floors, one being an open bay (ie less floor area to "furnish"), probably allowed that. Anyway, I'll be getting this one day 1, building it, admiring it, then anxiously awaiting the next likely great modular with a different set of trade offs.
  10. Im excited - love the era/theme. Also, the minfig wanted poster is hilarious, the mirror looks like a great part, and all the details will make for a fun and interesting build - cant wait for January!
  11. Great work tobysan! Really like the idea of combining a cafe and bike shop into one storefront - feels like something you would see in the cool part of a real city. Excellent photos too!
  12. Thanks Johnny6666! Will definitely provide updates as I find the time to make them... This was all done freehand so no LDD unfortunately but thanks for asking Thank you lightningtiger! I do plan an interior and will upload pics as soon as soon as I build it out Thanks WarSquirrel, much appreciated! Thank you PBarzz! I was pleasantly suprised by the number of dark red bricks too (helpful for the "historic" look) - turns out the ground floor of the cafe in the original set had plenty of them in the rear and side walls. Thanks for noticing the offsets and cornice details too - went through lots of design iterations trying to add some interest to that portion of the building and may still keep messing with it...
  13. Wondermonkey, thanks very much for the encouragement and advice! The lack of height was my first concern too - couldn't figure out how to come up with enough pieces to add the third level but felt a bit better when I saw that the DA only has two as well. That said, great thought on using a sign to get more height, thanks. I do have a fair bit of interior pieces left over and plan to furnish things plus add stairs (right now I just have a rear balcony/fire escape with ladder as the only upper floor access, which I know is less than optimal). Finnbricker, thank you very much! I did enjoy the challenge (and money saving) that came from using just one set and was happiest with that SNOT portion of the building you mentioned too. I am very impressed with what you and Sonicstarlight did with this set - incredible work, something to aspire to, thanks for sharing!
  14. Thanks very much for the advice - I had tried that with no luck but finally figured out that an old version of ie was giving me the issue - no problem once I tried with chrome Thanks
  15. Hi All, New member, new to MOC'ing... Like a number of others, I have been trying to MOD (or completely rebuild) the Bike Shop & Cafe into a modular scale building. I have only used parts from 1 copy of the set but...I did use my own baseplate and one or two sidewalk tiles (wanted to incorporate the manhole cover I had). Tried to go for an older industrial feel on upper floor with the look of a newer storefront and canopy below. Still need to add details (and an interior) but please let me know what you think of my first attempt in the meantime. Photos below show the building alone plus with the Pet Shop for scale. Thanks! http://www.brickshel...ry.cgi?f=549764
  16. Thanks Gaofar, great advice (I was wondering about the local/real life community) - will check out the websites now, much appreciated!
  17. Great work! Amazing how these are instantly identifiable (a Jeep, a Unimog, a Bronco, etc.) even in minifig/City scale - very impressive.
  18. I'm liking this set even more after seeing the close up shots - the fire escape looks really well done. Hoping S@H has a cool giveaway set to tie in with this - maybe a larger newsstand/kiosk?
  19. Hi All, I'm a long time Eurobricks reader (great site) and finally joined to discuss the latest modular. I was a huge lego fan growing up and, despite a "dark age," luckily still have all my childhood sets (tons of City/Town, Western, Pirate, Castle, etc.) from the '80s and '90s. Modulars got me back into things a few years back and now I'm addicted to multiple themes again and have started to do MOCs again too. Even thinking about a trip to Billund.... Anyway, happy to finally be part of the Eurobricks community! Thanks, PastVPresent
  20. Looks like a great set - provides much-needed small/"filler" buildings for the modular street while still managing to be very interesting. In fact, the mix of uses makes it one of the more interesting recent modulars I think. I also really like the variety of heights here (good for visual interest on the street) but I'm still trying to figure out where the stairway (or elevator) is and, if there isn't one, what I think about this new "precedent."
