  1. I thought he number of AFOL's LEGO has identified and the spending by b AFOL was very interesting. I knew that AFOL's spend a lot, but 20 times more than the average family with kids, wow! I assume this means that if you find one family and one AFOL that the AFOL will out spend the family, but just thinking about the revnue generted by AFOL's is quite significant. Thanks for he link. Andy D
  2. This is amazing! My hat is off to you for this creation. Your selection and parts usage is incredible. I would never think to use some of he parts the way you did. This is very inspiring, one of these days I am going to have to experiment with micro scale. Do you have more photos from different angles? Looking forward to your next creation. Andy D
  3. I finally got started! Amazing I started this thread almost a month ago and just got around to building. Well, real life and responsibilities sometimes get in the way. I decided on the Fire Brigade! I started Monday, and should finish tomorrow. It has been a great build, lots of surprises and interesting techniques. To think, I almost passed on this one a couple of years ago. I sure am glad I didn't! Besides being a fun and quite an educational build for me it is a great parts pack! I went from almost not buying to buying 2 and I am glad I did. Andy D
  4. Thanks again. I have been considering several techniques for doing this. From using 8x8's on the bottom and top to 8x8's on top or a combination of 2x16's and 2x12's and 2x4 and one 2x6 brick for support. I have seen an estimate of about $2.50 US for a single unit as specified, so about $10.00 US for a 32x32. Of the two methods I have been considering, I believe using all 8x8's top and bottom would be less expensive than using some 2x16's and 2x12's. I just need to find time to order parts and experiment. BTW: do you hav any photos of you last weekend's display? My main LEGO interest right now is modular size and type buildings, but Micropolis does look interesting, so I am also considering some Micropolis as well. Thanks, Andy D
  5. This is a beautiful building! I really llke all the details in the Apple store, very realistic. The second floor is furnished very well, and I really like all the "texture" elements you added to the outside of he building. I hope you do make it in bricks. Did you get a parts count? Thanks for sharing this. Andy D
  6. Thanks for reminding me of this. I found an email to myself about looking at this back in mid-March, but somehow with all the things going on I forgot about it. This is one of the things I really like about this forum, someone (or several) usually have an answer, or several different ideas about how to do something. I think I will try this soon. I believe it will be great for what I do. I do not build cities, i just build individual display models, but I think this is the answer I am looking for. I am looking forward to trying 16x16, 16x32 and 32x32. I may modify the bottom to be a solid bottom of some sort, but I will have to try it out. But for now I am off to build my first modular in my new studio. Thanks again, Andy D
  7. Whoops... I forgot about that. How did that slip my mind? Maybe instead of base plates. Maybe make a pseudo baseplate out of large n x n plates and using them as a stabilized foundation on which to build. One could still use a baseplate as the bottom baseplate I described above, then build another baseplate (foundation?) out of 2 x n bricks and n x n plates to make the desired foundation, like a 32 x 32 baseplate. I am beginning to wonder about this. Might still try it sometime though. Andy D
  8. I really like this! The colors go very well together, the white and tan look very fresh and bright. I do agree with others who mentioned the window size on the first floor of the apartment, maybe some drapes. Lots of nice little details, flowers and the 1x1 rounds add a nice texture to the building. I would probably spend all my time with a cupcake and coffee on the roof terrace and never go to work, except on bad wether days ;) Looking forward to your next. Andy D
  9. Very nice! Just the escentials and a good minimalist construction and I do not believe it to be ugly. Great function, looks like you have good off road function and good speed combined in one! The video was great, not too long, very informative. Andy D
  10. Thanks for the replies. I have been doing some thinking about this as well. My thoughts are on reinforcing modular buildings and the like, though it could be applied to anything such as castle or historical buildings. I was thinking maybe use 2 baseplates. The bottom baseplate could have a foundation of 2 x n bricks from the middle to the edge with spacing to provide enough support, maybe every 6 to 8 or 10 rows of studs (from the center out to the edge) then put another baseplate on top of this, then build your structure on top of this. I believe this would help or eliminate the turned up corner on buildings such as the Grand Emporium and Cafe Corner. The only downside is it would add a bit of weigh and some expense, but it might add to the looks, like some of the Architecture series buildings are displayed. Andy D
  11. I have seen several MOCs built on baseplates with a row of bricks below. I have been wondering if his could provide additional stability and maybe prevent corners from turning up. For those who do build by putting the baseplate on bricks... Why do you put your baseplate on additionl bricks? Do you find it adds additional stability? Or is for looks? If for stability, do you use 1 x n, 2 x n or rows of 1 x n or 2 x n bricks? I am thinking that for stability it my be necessary to use several concentric squares of bricks from the center to the outside of the baseplate. Thoughts... Andy D
  12. -Chris... Your space is really starting to take shape. When you get your "Build Island" in place you should be ready to get some serious sorting and building done. I have some additional photos of my studio here.... http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=80916entry1586201 Let me know what you think. Andy D
  13. I would have to say... The Green Grocer. It was still available when I got started with modulars, but all I wanted was the Cafe Corner, or so II thought. I soon found out that with modulars "you can't have just one". I BL'ed both the CC and GG, I thought was saving money, but at that time I could have got them on eBay for about $350 each. Hindsight is 20:20. Now any set I really like I buy 2, no more regrets. Andy D
  14. Thanks for all the wonderful comments. I really like my new studio! I have several challenges now... 1. Get my inventory sorted and stored so parts can be easily located. 2. Keep the space organized so I will be able to maintain building space. 3. Build storage space for models to be put away while not on display. I know one of my biggest challenges will be not having too many sets on display at one time as that could look very cluttered and then no set would look special. Thanks again, Andy D
  15. Studio finally completed, new cabinets, desk and shelves installed and moved in! In late March I discussed my new studio here, and showed some preliminary 3D renderings. I said that I hoped to have it completed by the end of April. Well it almost was! The cabinets, shelves and desk were installed on May 2, 2013. Not bad, only 2 days after my projected installation date. Just for reference, here is what my studio looked like before we started work. The North-East corner.. And, the South-East corner... Below is the North-East corner, new carpet and ready for installation. Below is the South-East corner, new carpet and ready for installation. The North-East corner with the new cabinets, desk and shelves installed. The South-East corner with the new cabinets, desk and shelves installed. North-East Corner. All moved in. South-East Corner. All moved in. There are a few more photos on Flickr if you wish. http://www.flickr.com/photos/74992335@N05/ I am moved in, but not settled in. I still have a few things to store, then start sorting my inventory (again) and get it stored in bins in my new cabinets. I know it looks like my shelves are already full, but that is all the display I want. I plan to install some shelving in my closet to put models that I will rotate in and out of the display area in my studio. Of course, some models will not make it into the rotation, past the first assembly and display they will simply be displayed once, disassembled and put in to the inventory for future models. I was so pleased with the design that during the last week before installation I met with Jennifer of Norm Tessier Cabinets at: http://www.normtessiercabinets.com/ to start design on my office. While working in my home office, and thinking about my studio I decided (with the blessing and input from my wife) to get my office done as well. I hope to have it done sometime in June. Well, I am off to enjoy my new studio. Andy D
  16. I wonder how well 2 per year would sell??? Maybe not so well, one per year is enough for me. I think a museum or library or combo museum/library could be interesting. A pizza or deli with apartments could be interesting. Even a first floor bank with upper floors office building could be interesting. One thing I am sure of is whatever it is, it will amaze me! And I will buy it! The one LEGO purchase I am positive of is the modulars. Just MHO, YMMV Andy D
  17. I really like all three! I do believe the red and white could be more striking if there were some white accent pieces on the front, perhaps at the top of he windows. The brown building has some very clever elements to it, such as the roof garden, which could be very nice in an urban enviornmnt and the bay window also caught my attention. The white nd black building is quite striking. I really like the front windows, becauce using this technique windows can be made to any desired size. Overall, great! Andy D
  18. I second what streifen said. Great MOC! I may have to replicate this. Andy D
  19. Wow! An entire LEGO family. Welcome to Eurobricks. Andy D
  20. Try BaseBrick.com, you can enter your sets and get a listing of combined parts. It willeven tell you wht parts are in what sets. Andy D
  21. I really think the whole issue here is that the titile of the thread is incorrect. The thread should be titled "Stuff I like and stuff I don't like" The beginning of he thread, and many of he responses would be much different with just a change in title. Just MHO, YMMV Andy D
  22. Hmmm... I don't think I can handle that kind of stress in my life right now, but thanks for asking your Magic 8-Ball for me. After reading all the comments, it looks like it is coming down to the FB or PS. The TH is just more than I want to tackle right now, too big and I think I will save he PC for later. Thanks for all the help! Any more? Thanks, Andy D
  23. Great church. This just goes to prove... Everything is better with a hamster! Andy D
  24. Kalethrion, I get it, I think it is very humorous. It is unfortunate, but I think you may need to explain the joke at some future time. Not too soon, you need to wait until you see who else "gets it". Just MHO, YMMV Andy D
  25. Welcome to EB! You had to sell your collection to get re-infected? We all get bitten by he LEGO bug in different ways, but his appears to be one of be more unusual ways. If selling your collection was not your idea, I am sorry. Andy D
