It's confirmed that it's going to be the Kwik-E-Mart? (or at least, the "little bird" said that it would be) That's interesting. I was honestly expecting the elementary school, or something, but I'd like to see what they come up with for this. D2C sets are out of my price range, but I am looking forward to seeing how the design it. Knowing what the D2C is does help give us some idea on the CMF. I'd say Snake and Apu are guaranteed (though Snake is questionable, they did Nelson, and his role in the show is about as controversial). I'm still hoping for Skinner and Moe, and hopefully they'll make Willie as well, but so far we have no indication of that.

Decal when printed seem to have loss of quality?
Borador replied to Divine's topic in Minifig Customisation Workshop
I don't currently have time to check out that website, but sticker paper is not usually better than waterslides. It's easier to use, and much cheaper, but does not look nearly as good. I have seen some people do good things with it, but that takes a lot of practice and money. $2 a sheet is not that bad, you could shop around and wait for sales, etc. But a different method probably won't get you a better price, unless you sacrifice quality. The only exception I can think of is rub-on film, which is completely different than rub-on-transfers. I don't know how to explain it without glorifying it, but basically, you print a design onto a film, and then rub the ink off onto the piece. I have yet to see it used on LEGO, so I don't know how well it would stick, but I imagine there are some ways of doing it. Once used, you can wash the film and use it again. However, there are many problems... the main one is that there is no way to get colors to show up since the ink is transparent. So you could only do it on light pieces. The other major problem is that it is very difficult to do. Cheaper? Yes. But very impractical. So, as far as cost is concerned, I don't have a better solution for you. There was a guy a little while ago who was doing all kinds of experiments with different methods. Some of his ideas were pretty cool. I'll see if I can find a link...- 17 replies

Borador replied to Divine's topic in Minifig Customisation Workshop
I've never heard of decal paper that works like that. Do you have a brand name or a link? I may be able to help you more if I know exactly what you've got. I thought you just had sticker paper or waterside decals.- 17 replies

LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 13 Rumours and Discussion
Borador replied to just2good's topic in Special LEGO Themes
No, not possible, and here's why: confederates are often associated with racism. Now we can debate politics all day, whether such a figure would indeed be racist or not, but the fact remains that when people see a confederate, they know what cause they were fighting for (well, it was actually way more complex than that, but whatever), so LEGO would be taking a bit of a risk making one. -

I agree that the names could have gotten obscured in translation. I've gotten a few ideas, the only one I can't explain satisfactory is confederate soldier... Hobo could be a tramp, but I think a medieval peasant is more likely. However, I have to agree, even if these are within LEGO's standards, they are a bit mundane. I guess we'll see. -

Okay, those displays are awesome, Cammo. And very well photographed. Did you do something to that Ent, or is that what it normally looks like? I don't think I've ever seen it close up.

Lego Star Wars Painting Help?
Borador replied to ToaofPlasma's topic in Minifig Customisation Workshop
I'm not 100% sure I understand what you want. Are you asking what tools or paints to use, or do you want techniques? If you want tools and paint, I'd directly ask someone like Bilbobful, FlamingBricks, or someone of the like. Most pros on Flickr always tell their materials when asked, so you might have more luck there. As for technique, I hate to tell you, but practice makes perfect. What works for me might not work for you (and since I rarely paint, I don't know what works for me, so I can't help there). You have to experiment. Get some cheap figures from Bricklink that are faded and full of cracks and just practice. Reading glasses might help you to see the small details better (for me, they're a placebo; they don't actually help, but I feel like they do). Learning how to draw (assuming you don't already know, good if you do, fine if you don't since you can learn) will help you out too. Even if drawing on paper and on a figure are two different things, the skills you need overlap a bit, so it'd be worth your time to do so. If nothing else, it would help you develop the skills of turning a real thing into a LEGO design. I mean, I wish there was more I could tell you, but frankly, that's it. You need to discover what works for you; all anyone else can tell you is what paint and tools to use (not me, though. Ask a pro). This is a very non-standard thing, as it should be, since it's about creativity. So just practice until you get it. Sorry there isn't more I can say... -
Decal when printed seem to have loss of quality?
Borador replied to Divine's topic in Minifig Customisation Workshop
The white background is being printed when it should be clear? Two possibilities. If you're using white paper, the clear will cover the white, and you get white. Kind of a hard phenomenon to describe, but the clear prints the color of the paper, it only prints clear if the paper is clear. Either that, or you've got it off-white instead of white, which would only happen if you have clear paper. I wouldn't think that'd be that a big of a deal, though, since once applied to color, the off-white would be just as clear. Another thing to note, and I know you weren't talking to me, but there are many, many ways to do custom decals. Decal paper is only one. I use (or used to use) something called Rub-On-Transfers, which, while hard to use, can work nicely. But due to their difficulty, I don't really recommend them. They aren't too cheap, so you waste a good 20 bucks just learning how to use them (or at least I did). That is one other option, but there are many, many more, I just can't think of them.- 17 replies

It won't let me see it without logging in (don't have an account), but I'm using my context clues and guessing it's Mina Tirith? I wouldn't get my hopes up if I were you...

LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 13 Rumours and Discussion
Borador replied to just2good's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I can't help but wonder what language these were originally in? Do we know? Because if so, we can look at alternate translations to see if things like "Confederate Soldier" are really accurate. It may well be a member of the cavalry and be part of the western theme (which, I admit, the two look nothing alike, but for someone who knew very little of American history, they may have thought it to be a civil war soldier, and their mind jumped to "Confederate"). It's possible. Hobo still throws me off, though... Maybe a medieval peasant? -
Excellent. Might I ask what pieces you used on the hood? I don't recognize them.

That's pretty much my philosophy on LEGO investing. Though I try to be reasonable about it (for buying LEGO because one thinks one possibly could resell it is not good. LEGO is expensive and the value usually doesn't go up. Money does not grow on trees), if you can get it cheap enough and can afford it, then it isn't a bad idea, but just be careful since LEGO doesn't go up in value that much. assess the risk. It looks like a good set to me, but make sure your money is in the right place... EDIT: Did the filter seriously change assess to megablocks? HA! Must've spelled it wrong!

LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 13 Rumours and Discussion
Borador replied to just2good's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I don't about that. Even though the last series was very heavy Sci-Fi/Fantasy, I'd think that there'd at least be SOMETHING. As far as I can recall, there has yet to be a series without anything from some fantasy genre, and so I find it hard to believe that it wouldn't have any. But I agree that some of the figures on the list are... Unlikely... I think they could. If not a better one, they could make it more generic or different. Army Men also come in tan, and the green that they use is usually closer to LEGO's Dark Green than regular green. I bet they could figure something out. Although I wonder if that isn't going too close to a military theme? I wonder if that doesn't violate the company's values, even if it is a toy? I mean with Toy Story they didn't have much choice. Here, though, they do, so I wonder whats up... -
Both Orcrists looks really great. After seeing close up pictures of most of these figures, I can definitley say that this wave is good. The build aren't that great, and a few more new characters would have been nice, but if we ignore what we didn't get, this wave is quite spectacular. Excellent stuff.

Brickin It Custom review: The Destructor
Borador replied to WetWired's topic in Minifig Customisation Workshop
It's Gozer, from Ghostbusters. I wasn't sure about this at first, but it's grown on me a lot. It actually looks quite nice. Good rendition of the character, it actually looks like an official figure. -

Nice job hiding the BURP. I couldn't even tell it was there. Nice build.

Depends. Do you have any plans to sell? Any rare/valuable sets? I think it largely depends. I'd save the box to, say Cloud City (I don't have it, but if I did, I'd save the box), but for something ordinary or cheap or common, I'd just toss it. I normally recycle all of them, though that may be a mistake. I don't have anything rare, so whatever. So, if you need space, so through them to see what you've got and decide on each one. There's no all-encompassing answer.

LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 13 Rumours and Discussion
Borador replied to just2good's topic in Special LEGO Themes
On the picture... Remember, they practically reused that bat guy. So that isn't a dead giveaway. A Crusader? THAT is a dead giveaway. Oh, and so is the drunk dude, the Toy Story arms and legs... I mean, I would love if it if these were real... But I don't think so... Now, as for the list? I don't know about it... Army Man? Maybe a toy soldier of some sort, as mentioned before (possibly a tan one this time) but I wonder how they'd pull of the base with the CMF base... Bartender is possible... Hobo is less likely, but possible. Confederate? That's pushing it, all things considered... I don't know. I guess we'll see. The lack of anything Sci-Fi whatsoever is odd. I'd say probably not... Do we have a release date? If it is later, than we probably won't get any real information until closer to it. -
Johnny Thunder: The Myth, the Minifig
Borador replied to Peppermint_M's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
I used to have Adventurers as a kid. This was a very interesting article, never knew one mini figure could have so much going on. I think the regional variation on names is especially interesting. I wonder if there are any non-AFOLs out there who still know him by one of those names. Also never knew of all those video games. He looks weird in some of them.- 24 replies
