  1. Yes, the Instagram link was also posted on the previous page. I did consider swapping the forehead print for a 1x2 grille slope, but now that I have it in person I prefer the print. Some of the suggested head mods reduce structural integrity, so I've opted to keep the head changes minimal. I haven't applied stickers though, so I did also end up adding some 1x2 ingots to the legs and front bumper, as the 2x6 tiles there otherwise end up looking a little plain. One other small improvement worth mentioning is to swap the four blue axle pins in the ankles with black ones, as they can be seen from the outside on the finished build. The TFW thread was very interesting. The knee-joint solutions are good, though I can see why they were left out of the official design. Unless you're actively playing with the model, the improved pose-ability is going to be rather offset by reduced sturdiness. I quite like the white and black recoloured models shown in the thread, and took note of their improved wing mirror design.
  2. Sure. The 'how it's done' couldn't be any simpler, but here's how he looks after replacing the printed 1x2 plate:
  3. Built my Octopus Prime today. Still not happy about the price, though VIP points brought it down to a more reasonable value. But wow, what a great set! The transformation process is straightforward and very satisfying, and for a transforming model the sturdiness is pretty good. The only weak area to be aware of is the hips-to-torso connection. The model is definitely more impressive for display in robot mode, but I love how you can also attach the jet-pack to the rear deck of the truck. The orange axe, pink power cube, and display plaque seem superfluous to me, though I certainly don't mind their inclusion. I did swap out the eyes for trans blue Medium Azure 1x1 round plates, as the print here was the one weak point aesthetically. Other than that though, the prints and metallic silver parts really set if off. 9.5/10 from me, and arguably a better set than the Delorean (which I also thought was superb).
  4. A lot of people have mentioned the eyes, and I agree. I'm thinking that a pair of trans blue 1x1 round plates will look a lot better than the side-printed 1x2 plate there. Possibly also a 1x2 grille slope in place of the forehead print, if that will still fit when the head is retracted.
  5. Looks really good. New wheels, suspension, and differential, though same gearbox and no new engine parts. The door mechanism looks interesting, and I like how the rear engine cover lifts up to expose the engine bay. The lack of any luggage is a tragic omission, but one I'm sure others here will correct :) I will probably get one, though I'll be content to wait a year or so until I can pick it up at 10-15% discount.
  6. Did TLG underestimate the interest in this one? The Tallneck's been out of stock on S@H since the day of release here in NZ, but I've finally been able to order a copy from retailer ToyCo. Looking forward to the build. Update: Built it today. Fantastic model, and quite reasonably priced. 9/10.
  7. Agreed. It also looks horizontally flipped from the directionality in the earlier picture from the opposite side, so two different wheel molds. Nice. It looks pretty faithful to the real vehicle, but they'll need to offer something new in terms of functions for me to really be interested, given that I already have the Sian.
  8. I bought two copies of set 8169 back in 2009 when it was released, and it was a great set for its time. But I've long since used the parts in other MOCs and found myself missing the original set. The first step was building it in LDraw prior to ordering parts, but it became clear that the set would need an upgrade. So here is my GT3 version featuring the following improvements. (The LDraw File and XML Parts List are also available for anyone interested.) • Wide-body kit • New wheels (Mustang/Porsche rims) • Front splitter & rear wing • Extended diffuser • Brick-built head & tail lights • Improved seats and new dashboard • New engine
  9. Yes, all perfectly true and worth pointing out. But while this may go some way towards explaining the price, it doesn't do anything to make me as a potential customer feel any better about it. Still, these will sell like hotcakes so Lego can pretty much charge whatever they want for the set, and still have them sell out and go to back-order before many can even get an order in. Nice to see that much of it is printed rather than relying on stickers though, so I appreciate that. I might have to wait for this one to be discounted after release.
  10. The Horizon Tallneck set is also licensed, yet with only some 300 less parts is literally half the price. The Delorean, also licensed, was the same price but had an extra 400 or so parts. I think Optimus looks great, but I don't know that I can justify spending NZ$280 on a 1500pc set.
  11. Based on the same picture we're all looking at. There may be some angling to the spokes, but it looks much reduced from the source material, and I expect the same wheel mould to be used for all four wheels.
  12. Based on that picture, I'm not convinced the Lego rims are directional at all.
  13. Well, obviously doubling up the set will make it more expensive. That goes without saying.
  14. But it's not 240EUR. It's 140EUR. Where are you getting 240 from?
  15. I'm not sure I follow your math. 21058 is 140EUR while 3x 31120 would be 300EUR. The Architecture range has always been a bit pricy, but 1476pcs for 140EUR isn't terrible.

  17. Yes, that and also you would need to redesign a custom base to fit just the additional rear half pyramid. I wouldn't place too much stock in that, as they note themselves that the dimensions may have changed. Also, if you're looking to add a second land area behind the completed pyramid, then you'll need to build a custom shortened base with the river space removed. This would leave you with a strip of some 10x40 studs behind the pyramid to build upon, if that's the goal.
  18. Yes, I'm aware of the connectivity. Not quite what I meant :)
  19. It will be interesting to see whether Lego offer instructions for completing the pyramid, or whether they just leave it to the AFOL community to find our own solutions.
  20. I was suggesting adding the second half of the pyramid without mirroring the rest of the diorama, which could be done with a second set though I personally don't think it would be worth the cost. The set has definitely been designed with such an option in mind. I'm actually okay with the half-pyramid though, and can see why they chose this. For one thing, the full pyramid would make it a very deep set and difficult to display on most shelves. It would also make the interior access awkward given the set's specific functionality.
  21. With two sets you could easily complete the pyramid without mirroring anything else but the surrounding frame. But you'd be doubling the price without really doubling the display value, so while I'm sure someone will do it, I don't really see it as being a popular option. If Lego want to encourage such a mod then they really ought to release digital instructions for it, as I agree that doubling the entire set would look rather silly.
  22. 21058 has not been delayed. TLG are just doing really well at keeping a lid on this one.
  23. Speaking as someone who would like to be drawn back into buying more Technic models, I would agree that Lego Technic is missing the mark a bit. On the positive side, I bought the Ducati Panigale bike and loved it. Same for the Lamborghini Sian. Both were well-designed, satisfying to build, and very functional, and the Ducati at least was very well-priced. But then there are sets like the recalled gear-shredding Osprey, the flimsy Ferrari 488, and the 1-wheel-drive McLaren Senna that could have and should have appealed but just didn't. Looking at the 2022 models, both the large BMW bike and the (also recalled) McLaren F1 car struck me as must-have sets on first viewing, but then quickly lost their appeal as reviews and closer inspection revealed their significant flaws (being flimsy and sticker-reliant for the bike, and lack of functionality & authenticity for the F1 car). I would like to see more in the intermediate size range - more products between the kid-targeted pullback models and the super-expensive premium sets. This year's ATV fits that category, but for me was letdown by a poor colour scheme and messy stickers (the recoloured blue version shown on Brickset was far superior). More generally, the trend towards low-function licensed display sets seems like a step away from what Technic has traditionally represented, and I just find the present line-up to be very underwhelming. Still, if TLG nail the next Ferrari supercar then they'll probably still manage to empty my wallet there.
  24. The issue with the self-closing doors can be fixed by swapping the pair of #2780 friction pins in the hinges for the older (1980s-vintage) #4459 friction pins.
