  1. Really cool, thanks for preparing. btw, I have v4.3.8 of LDD but I don't see the "Outlines on Bricks" option, how do you access this edit: I found it, thanks to a hint from Oldnut: I moved the compatibility mode level slider all the way to the left
  2. The last two 8110 Unimogs available for retail sale at TRU, with a surprise not-announced (at least to me) 20 % discount. I just wanted the tires and portal axles. (Hint, go to BL for the rest )
  3. Nice review, makes me want to get this for my kids. The worm gear is an extra part? Did it come with two? Is the worm gear for the combined B-model?
  4. There is a thread on dyeing parts elsewhere on the site: I'd give a link but I am on mobile right now. Just search for dyeing Lego. RIT dye has been used by others successfully.
  5. Thanks for all of the comments, guys. Certainly tires from 9397 are great, I'll be using them as appropriate as scale demands. I'm going to go with 8110 tires for larger MOC's and with the portal axle/hubs, I might be able to get a good deal on a new 8810 set or two,,,
  6. If you had only one set of tires, would you prefer Unimog tires, from 8110, or ballon tires from the 9398 crawler? These would be used in a wide range of MOCs, including trucks, crawlers, fast cars, so looking for best flexibility.
  7. Close to the bottom of the rebrickable page is a thumbnail picture of the part, in a section marked "part's sets" Click on the thumbnail image to expand the section, rebrickable shows 18 sets and 54 MOC's (including 5 sets that I have). Many of these sets are 93xx or 42xxx, so should be at TRU
  8. Didn't get much sleep last night, I actually thought one of these was a good idea
  9. TRU seems to do dynamic pricing, all of the Technical now matches S@H, the 42000 was $160, its now $130 US. The 42009 is still $200, same as the 8110, and I have a 15% off coupon, so I think k it will be the 8110 for parts and to build the and awesome c-model jeep
  10. OK, so despite (or in spite of) a 4 yr old PC, I managed to get 9700+ loose parts into a lxf file, which now works great in LDD as my own personnel parts list for buildign. But I dread the thought of updates. It took considerable massaging, and some funky Excel work, to go from Rebrickable xml export in BL format, clean up to remove coding, copy into LDD-manager, run the macro to generate the lxf file, and then figure out what parts had wrong or different ID's and which didn't load. There is considerable inconsistency between ReBrickanbe, BL, LDD-manager, and LDD in terms of part codes and what the three 'think' are correct LDD part numbers - about 30% of parts need to have part #'s added by hand, took about 2 hours to do this and find the 1/2 dozen parts that LDD didn;t like - the whole process took about 4 hours. One issue is that LDD only uses 4 or 5 digit numbers for parts, while BL, etc. uses alphanumerics in addition. LDD mostly, but not always, has the most recent part number if multiple versions of a part or mold exist, while BL tracks all of them. We need a way to have a clean assignment from BL or other system ID's mapped onto LDD ID's, and confirmed for accuracy. Alternatively, I can work with the Excel file generated by LDD, but once the Excel file has been updated to account for changes in inventory, need a way to go from Excel back to a new lxf file. As time permits I will try to write an Excel macro to generate the lxfml code, but its hairy, some tips would be welcome to get part xyz parsing correct.
  11. If you are shooting for the web or this forum, 720p is fine. Look at some of Sariel's videos and some others as well for some tips on how its done, what you like about them, and what didn';t work - set up shots, different camera angles, panning and zooming, etc... Most important, especially with video, is bright full-color balanced lights - you can see some of Sariel's lights in the background. These don't cost much, just a bulb and a cheap clip-on reflector from a hardware store, or you can get a small video light kit off of some auction site. Most important, is practice and self-critic. And you may need a hamster or other small furry animal.
  12. TRU is offering a good deal on 8110 (in-store only, its the last of 'em), 9398, and 42009 (but not on 42000, oddly enough). I've already nearly maxed out my LEGO budget for the year. Should I get one of these, or wait for 42025 or 42030 to become available? If you can get only one, which? I am leaning towards one of the 2014 sets, like to get some opinions.
  13. Cool, I'll give it a whirl, thanks for the tip bbqqq
  14. Its 2:00 am here in Connecticut and I am not yet done with real work stuff, and still waiting for one last BL order. Mostly done, if I am still awake will take some pictures this weekend. Jim, buy a 42025 for me also ;)
  15. Is there any way to create a parts list from a Rebrickable export file? I've got 1000's of loose parts, and it will be a real pain to enter them all into a LXF manually.
  16. Wow, some great experienced comments, appreciate it. Using smaller gears would be better, but gives less clearance. @20LH - axle lengths were selected in this example for clarity, I guess I would have figured out issues with turning radius eventually. Well, its back to the drawing board, I was hoping to use parts on hand rather than BL'ing proper portal axles, but may need to reconsider.
  17. Thanks, I am also concerned about the bottom, but adding sufficient bracing somewhat negates the whole concept of having a portal axle, as too many parts at the bottom limits the extent of ground clearance. I guess this is why LEGO made specialty parts for this function. Something to sleep on... For steering, I will work out some form of strengthening of the universal joint, there are ideas in Sariel's book for doing this. I haven't worked out the connection between a steering rack and the axle yet, though..
  18. Looks like a lot of fun, a lot of potential with this. Great for cats as well. I especially like the concept of steering by leaning. Have you thought of attaching large tread links to the outside, may make the ride a bit smoother?
  19. EB should not be the e-bay police. Buyer beware.
  20. What do you think of this home-made portal axle? Will the axle-8 with stop, not being as well supported as by Unimog portal axle assembly, for example, be able to handle stresses and weight of an attached model? I am anticipating a medium sized chassis but maybe four motors plus servo on the finished machine. Of course cross-bracing and other attachments can be added, not shown to keep this simple. Thanks for commenting - here is the lxf - http://www.bricksafe...portal axle.lxf
  21. Does anyone know if the Westfarms Mall, West Hartford, store is open yet? The Danbury, Connecticut store is, as they have announced Grand Opening events.
  22. Need to start working on a fully PF/RC Dalek , but does LEGO have a toilet-bowl plunger part?
