    Matthias comes to, gasping and thrashing, until the gritty sand in his eyes and Rone's voice bring him back to reality. He lies still on his back for a moment, arms and legs splayed and grasping the earth, eyes shut against the sudden light, until his breathing returns to a controllable state. "Something ...horrible drank from the pool. Darkness and shadows... the Master of Regret drained the pool and sent it here, from whatever civilization of the gods created it, but it was too late." "The Old Gods, he called them... the darkness destroyed their world."

    Matthias eyes Zane closely, and discerning no lingering ill effects, throws caution to the wind, dips his head to the pool, and drinks.

    Matthias regards Zane cooly, trying to determine to whom he's actually speaking. "I have seen the visions of Orrik with the Anvil," he says, "visions of the forging of the world." He thinks hard, closing his eyes and recalling the images as clearly as possible. Suddenly he comes to a stop and his eyes pop open. "Did you say falling off an 'island'? I saw the battles and the darkness, and the fall." Cautiously the gnome approaches the water and dips a small amount in his hand, looking at it in wonder. "Is this water of Orrik as well?"

    Matthias, at first terrified that someone as evil as Zane has found the well, becomes indignant - as only someone less than half a meter tall can - when no one asks the gnome if he wants to partake, but the transformation that comes over Zane disabuses Matthias of any notion of drinking as well. "Even his own collected souls will not let him drink; serves him right." he intones.

    Matthias wraps the offered cloth around his feet and shuffles behind Guts, doing his best to walk out of rhythm.

For Skrall: Because ogres with beards sounds awesome, and it's not like Skrall isn't powerful enough already. Grogmas Beard - I like PPJB's idea! I vote for that one! For Dyric Rone: Watch yourself, you're not wearing armor! 'Assassins of Fortune' Branded Bodysuit - SP:4; wearer is *Nimble*; bodywear. For Lord Lawrence Boomingham: So he can pay his debts to Arthur and Docken. 129 Gold

    Matthias nods briefly, though he doesn't like it, and points the compass back at Zane.

    Popping a tonic, Matthias does his best to brush the acid off Daneeka with sand. As the others talk, he makes a wry face. "Glad to know you trusted my life to that Nordic magic," he says. "The two sisters, Parvati and Medusa, grabbed me and dragged me off at first, but I convinced Parvati at least to go after Daneeka with me. She might've eventually come to our side but I don't think so now." Pulling out his compass, the gnome concentrates on the closest edge of wyrm territory, wondering if the party could make a break for it and fight their way out without too much trouble, then get to the inn. After noting that direction, he has another idea and wills the compass to point to the nearest water source deep enough for a bath.

    "I release you from any obligation and I pray you might find your sister well!" the gnome calls after Parvati as she departs. Before Rone's words reached the druid's ears - in fact as soon as Daneeka's form became visible - Matthias had begun to pull in as much ether as he could handle, praying desperately to Orrik for strength. Now he carefully unleashes the torrent with all the healing skill he can muster, one hand on the Anvil in hopes of strengthening the connection to his god.

    I would vote it does. Matthias lies still, twisted and crushed on the hot sand, his hands still on his cannon. Once again a fever dream of healing those around him swirls through his unconscious mind.

    Shouldn't Solimon have been cured of *Burning* by Matthias' Shield? Matthias surveys the weather change and shouts to Rone and the mage, "No, I'll give Zane a tonic, Parvati should attack while the weather holds!" > Parvati: Light Spell vs. Body B > Matthias: Tonic vs. Zane

    My bad guys, I typed my reply in last night but I must not have clicked save.... Matthias gasps as he's crushed by the wyrm and pulls in ether to heal himself.

    Matthias continues to lie limply on the hot sand, dreaming strange dreams of healing a Winged Warrior.

    Matthias' legs keep pumping, though the gnome is beginning to wonder what will actually happen once they reach the tavern. Will Zane simply follow and fight them then?

    Matthias redoubles his speed, carrying the Anvil as fast as his little legs will go towards the tavern.

    "Gotta be honest, here, Doctor Daneeka, I'm less worried about any timetable than I am about not becoming a madman's inner monologue. It's not like the fate of thousands of innocents rest on our shoulders here - we're trying to find some gifts for a diplomatic mission. If there's any hope of gaining some reinforcements, I'm for that." As Rone reacts with distress to Daneeka's words, Matthias adds, "It's not open war, Master Dyric; it's being on the safe side in a brawl against 4 enemies - a fight even you admit we'll probably end up having eventually, possibly after Zane is even more powerful than we've already seen. If you ask me, Zane is evil - that soul sucking bit just isn't right - and a danger to this whole region, especially if we find him some immortality juice."

    Matthias looks at Rone as if the latter's gone bonkers. "So, you want us to go traipsing around a deadly wasteland, with our best fighter stripped of his weapons, at the mercy of a guy who is considered insane by a court of demons? Why does this not sound like a good idea to me?" Hopping down from the anvil, the gnome offers a desperate suggestion. "Can't we go back to civilization and find some help? Surely someone among the greenskins would be willing to send a group of select warriors with us to fight this Zane monster, especially since we know we can locate him without a problem, and it would better secure their lands? And in any case, if we help him find the Fountain, he'll just end up more powerful and we'll end up fighting him at even more of a disadvantage! Then we can all be assimilated into his bag of tricks and we'll never see Eubric again." The gnome looks surprised at his long (by his standards) speech, but nonetheless looks to the others for any sign of support or sanity.

    Matthias climbs atop his anvil as the group impatiently awaits Rone's return.

    Matthias gives Dyric a look, but there's an anvil in front of the gnome's face so no one sees it. "Alright, so that didn't look winnable to me. Do we cooperate with that madman-demon-thing when he finds us again? I'm certain he will." Setting the anvil down, he pulls out his compass and wills it to point towards the other half of the map as a demonstration for the others. "Watching him... do whatever he did to those other wretches was bad enough. I'd rather not have it happen to me."
