    So, I suppose the only question is what do we do now? Can't fight Zane, can't find the treasure without him, no one wants to work with a dude who sucks out souls....

    Matthias runs, stealthily carrying his giant anvil, after the big marauder. When Daneeka asks what next, Matthias can't come up with any ideas.

    Matthias' look morphs from confusion to a mixture of awe and suspicion, but he quickly decides that Rone being a demon (?!) is actually less important that being ready for whatever might be coming next. He takes the opportunity, as surreptitiously as possible, to extend healing ether to Holla, Rone, and himself, then uncorks a tonic, sipping carefully in the heat with his eyes on Zane's ugly henchmen.

    Not all of us want to sign up by mail. How would Matthias even know about the whole deal? Sometimes the most useful bits of a setting (from a role-play perspective) are the limitations.

    Matthias' eyes grow wide. Court of demons?! He looks at Dyric questioningly.

    Matthias gives up on firing since he can't seem to hit anything today and summons the ether to heal himself.

    Matthias is jerked back to his feet by the chemicals from Holla's vial, and finds ether unexpectedly pouring through him. Looking around, everyone else seems to be in pretty good shape, so he repeats.

    Matthias attempts to repeat his attacks but finds himself facedown in mud... and wonders where on Olegaia mud came from in the middle of a barren desert.

    Oh no, please do! He made it, he deals with it hahaha. But I did the maths. Guts v. Pongcanis Shaman - Critical Hit/Shield ([No Block] ((((20+64)x3)+40+4)x2x2x2)x2=4736, Shaman, Kanvyral, Melvokuul, A & B KO'd, 120 damage C) (F*cking Guts ) >Matthias v. Melvokuul Treasure Hunters C - Aim (11 Damage) Burning -1 :yawn: The Enemies Treasure Hunters C: 543 health remaining Matthias, jaw dropping as Holla simply wipes out the opposition, tries to play it cool as he barely knicks the mob of skeletons, and decides he'll just talk smack rather than waste ammunition. "Yeah, he said stay out of the way. My bet's on Master Guts." > Matthias: Extraordinaire vs. whatever might be left over when Guts is done.

    With a strong sense of deja vu, Matthias sets the Anvil aside very deliberately, then jerks the Fireball Extraordinaire into position, and attacks Melvokuul from the back row.

    Surveying his pockets, the gnome comes up with nothing worth using to prepare for what looks like a very interesting battle. Gotta remember to hit that potion stand he thinks, simultaneously wondering what on earth is going on, who the two groups surrounding the party actually are, and which one he should point his cannon at.

    Just short of yanking the Extraordinaire's trigger, Matthias becomes very aware of the approaching sandstorm, and as Holla's smoke bomb topples across his field of vision almost in slow motion, the gnome decides that his party leader definitely has the right idea. Somehow tucking a cannon that's bigger than he is under his mechanically-enhanced arm, Matthias hoists the Anvil () and flees a few steps before being overtaken by the storm. As the dust settles a little too quickly, Matthias again switches from anvil to cannon and regards the newcomer with suspicion. "We're ready to fight, though, if it comes to that," he adds, not satsified with Rone's attempt at de-escalation and doing his best to sound big and menacing. - which isn't saying much. Noticed the "Anvil of Torrik" in Matthias' inventory - typo or thinly veiled clue that the anvil isn't what it seems?

    Setting the Anvil aside very deliberately, Matthias jerks the Fireball Extraordinaire into position and attacks Kanvyral from the back row. Suggested Battle Order? Guts vs. Shaman Matthias vs. Kanvyral Dyric vs. Melvokuul Guts vs. pick a mob

    Matthias sets the anvil down and pulls his own compass out again. "Point to the physical location which corresponds to the mark indicating the Fountain of Youth on the other half of the map that Master Guts has," he says very carefully.

    "Wait, faker than this?!" Matthias can hardly believe his ears. Momentarily confused, Matthias looks at Daneeka and starts to reply, "It's just showing us back the way we..." Finally the gnome realizes that the doctor and Holla are looking at the later's compass, which appears to have a new direction, so he shuts up and starts walking in the direction indicated by Holla's compass, carrying the anvil with him.

    "How can there be so many magic compasses?" Matthias looks from Daneeka to Rone to Holla and pulls out his own compass, such hope he'd had, and on a whim flips it over. "Awwww, really?" On the underside are inscribed the tiny words, Gnoriental Trading Company. He suddenly remembers the angry little man's stall in the marketplace, a pile of the compasses on display. "These things are made by orphans in Dastan or Xu or something - and they're not even gnomes!" On a whim, though, as he looks around at the barren desert and says quietly, "Compass, where is the outpost we came from?"

    Not anxious to spend a lot of time walking aimlessly in the desert, Matthias hesitates a minute, hoping Holla will be able to glean some information from the two maps, before following Daneeka. Pretty sure I'm going to be out for about 48 hours - ScubaCarrot has control if needed for battle.

    Matthias reaches for his gold pouch but is only too happy to let Holla spend the coin instead. When Rone voices his thoughts, the gnome agrees. "Yes, interesting indeed. Who knows who or what we might run into." He eyes Guanette critically. "Now, let's have a look at that map and get outta this place."

    Matthias can hardly believe it. "I'm signing up for the next quest to Dastan, or Xu," he remarks over his shoulder. "Is there a map? We've only heard tales," Matthias says discreetly, "and we haven't been able to find a whole one. As for a guide, is there someone near here you would recommend?"

    Horror spreads across Matthias' face. "That sounds awful!" he cracks, "Has anyone actually seen this Soul Sucker - and lived to tell?"

    Matthias tries to disguise his hesitation as he takes the proffered claw in his exoskeleton-encased hand and rolls the unfamiliar name off his tiny tongue. "Peace to you, Guanette, and yes, we are looking for a fountain in the wastelands. Are you from this area? We really have no idea where to look." he says weakly, hoping no one will notice the enormous anvil he's set beside the table. Hearing the greenskin proprietor rattle off prices to Holla, the gnome casts a tiny call over his shoulder, "How much would it cost for you to let us drag Mr. Sour-and-Whiny out to the wasteland and leave him there?" Having said it, the gnome wonders whether never seeing Featherhead in another bar again would even be worth the trouble of putting up with the cringing, sniveling coward's presence long enough to maroon him. "Never mind, it's not worth my gold, nor my peace and quiet." Sorry all, something happened at work... back to regular life now.

    Matthias walks straight up to Featherhead and punches him in the face. Matthias starts to follow Guts, but upon seeing the bartender he groans. Isn't there a tavern somewhere in the world where that idiot isn't tending bar?! Diverting his path, the gnome ends up in a chair across from the were-bat. "Oh, excuse me," he says, awkwardly noticing his table companion for the first time. "Ummmm, my name is Matthias, pleased to meet you?"

    Matthias has many questions, but lets them go quietly. "Good luck with your investigation."
