  1. I vote Duck. Always vote Duck. Except the Donald.
  2. "We're about to raise an immortal from the dead, quite beyond our contractual obligations; we have no idea what will happen; and we're on an island-thingee where even time doesn't flow properly. You call this predictable?!" The gnome scoffs, but in genuine mirth. "I vote Lord Chauncey goes into the nether to find Passion," Matthias remarks, stuffing disdain into the word "Lord" as only the recently immortal looking on the yet mortal can.
  3. Yeah, it popularized it in the late 1990s... but it's in the film because it has been popular since (at least) the 1940s, at least in (English-speaking) militaries of the world.
  4. Matthias is obviously making stuff up, because we all know how that really went. Hahahaha, Matthias is only in his early twenties and the orcish invasion was 250 years ago! He's obviously thinking about an event that was only a small blip, perhaps a few weeks' absence of the king, nothing more.
  5. "Perhaps you are right that it is all based on experience. Mine simply tells me that a true king is far better than the petty backbiting and selfish ambition which propels Eubric. And apparently Etheria as well." Matthias resigns himself to taking part in the ritual, or not, as the council decides.
  6. The druid thinks for a moment. "Once, when I was very young, the goblins ever present in Draida Bay , but they were soon driven out by, well, by Heroicans, who later ... it's not as though I haven't seen bad kings. But even the kings in Baltarok all loved their lands and their people. The entire war was started because one of them went missing, and without his guidance, his son fell prey to outside influences. Do you not, in your heart, long for a king? Perhaps not; perhaps the problem in Eubric is that no one is truly of Uland anymore; no one has the very bedrock in their bones and there is no unified people to love. That, my friend, is a tragedy, and the cause of all the infighting and corruption. Not a king."
  7. Matthias shakes his head. "I am the carrier of Orrik's anvil; I don't know who has the other artifacts." The gnome nods thoughtfully. "No, Master Arthur. Two people, driven only by ambition, without a king to lead them."
  8. Matthias confused as can be, tumbles into the room, falling flat. He comes up grabbing for his handcannon until he realizes it's just Hybros, Guffington, and the others. "What's going on?!"
  9. Welcome to Heroica, dum!
  10. 50 gold?1 What kind of hero are you? I should think 50 gold per day would be more the going rate for us murderhobos!
  11. "Master Hybros and I actually tried to calm her down a little, but once we mentioned what might happen, she about exploded," the gnome says quietly to Ziegfried. Figuring there's no way he'll get a word in edgewise between the dragoon, Piglina, and the weather mage, Matthias waits quietly to see what fight will break out first.
  12. "I hope you're right..." "Master Arthur, that's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. We're better than a king? I believe in Heroica too, but just as you said, we're dis-unified, selfish mercenaries on a good day; often we're worse. I grew up under good kings in Drandora; kings who ruled because that is what they were made to do, because the people expected them to do it. You're right, you can't just pick anyone off the street, but someone just and wise and fair, whose power is absolute but limited, that sounds like the best thing that could happen to Eubric if you ask me." Matthias winces at Piglina's voice, and he keeps his tiny mouth shut.
  13. Matthias gives Ziegfried a hard look. "We have the Mother with us already; and even she says the Darkness I saw in my visions has been defeated, long ago. Surely she - and the Master of Regret, if it comes down to it - are just as old, just as knowledgeable as Passion would be, if we brought him back. The witches... yes, they're a problem, but do we really think that Lord Chauncey is the answer to that issue? He is already in close with the Master of Regret, and it appears to me that he has the Mother controlled by her desire to see her brother again. If we give him Passion as well, what's to say he's not worse than any witch? What's to say he's not one of them?" "In the end, I just really don't think this is any of our concern, and neither are the witches. Then again, who protects the people of Eubric if not us? There is no king to stand for what is right..." the gnome trails off....
  14. Matthias figures the weather worker will catch on quick enough, so he cuts right to the chase with Ziegfried. "I hear you saying that Passion was a good man, and I have no need to argue that. I'm trying to figure out though, why go to all this effort to bring him back, in particular? Why not my grandfather? He was as pure a barbering gnome as there ever was, Orrick be praised. But no one thinks it's a good idea to bring him back. And if the Old Gods were really just some people who became immortal and took up the positions, what's to stop Hoke from doing it now? Or you? Or me? I'm immortal, that seems like it was the only qualification." "The other question I have is this: everyone keeps talking about some looming threat to us all, but I don't see it. I don't feel drawn to a climax, I don't feel pressure from anything that is wrong - except that a bunch of people here seem to think Lord Chauncey is a swell guy. Maybe it's because I'm a young hero," the gnome catches himself - he's not that new to the business any more - "but I don't think there's all that much to be afraid of. The Wren person was done with long before my time and our walk through Baltarok showed just how much progress has been made there; I don't know what you saw in Dastan, but everything seems pretty alright to me. Why is everyone so afraid? What is there to fear that makes us want to resurrect someone long dead?"
  15. Matthias nods to Bombast, Regulus Ziegfried, and the dragon and realizes he's arrived just at the start of their conversation. "Sorry to interrupt;" the gnome addresses the dragoon, "I wanted to ask you about the man, Passion."
  16. Matthias stands stiffly and symbolically aside, wondering only a little what good it will do since there are no doors or hallways. Once Piglina has departed, he faces Hybros. "I wonder what good you think bringing back this Passion will do. I cannot see it, but truly I do not think there is a point in resisting this course of action any more." Speaking his thoughts out loud and wondering how this will work, the gnome addresses the ether. "Hello? I would like to find Master Arthur, if there is someone listening who can take me to him?"
  17. "There's us," Matthias notes halfheartedly. No one ever thinks about us, he thinks. Or at least me, and not for the first time he wonders about the Mother's offer to Hoke. Piglina's outburst and bustle leave Matthias nonplussed. I wonder if that's how I sound to the others, he wonders. And then comes the line that sets him off. Whatever happened to the strong leading the weak? That sounds a lot like Lord Chauncey! What he says, however, is, "Lady Piglina, I don't think there is a need to hurry - our comrades will most likely not act until we are gathered once more. In any case, as you say, there is a method - we would like to know everything we can about the Old Gods, their positions, their influence, their power... and the witches! What are they? Who are they? Why is everyone so afraid of them? And I think I would very much like to hear what you know of events in Eubric, since most of us call that our home now."
  18. And LEGOs! Don't forget LEGOs!
  19. "I am honored to meet you, Lady Piglina; Sir Pigley and I know each other well. He and I - and the swashbuckling swordscrab - have dealt with Lord Chauncey, the Master of Regret, and the Cold Circles before, and not pleasantly." The gnome looks, well, sad for a moment. "In any case, I can inform you that our employer has no intention of giving any 'gifts' to the council. Master Amarcolm and the Mother will 'receive' the gifts, but they intend to use them immediately, in order to resurrect the Old God Passion, the Mother's brother. It is not a course of action I am comfortable with" - although it's obvious the gnome is becoming more comfortable with understatement - "and I'm not sure I have the whole picture, but that's what we know so far." "As an addendum," Matthias continues after only a second, "I think there's quite a bit here we don't know. We saw a ...vision? shadow? time anomaly? of Master Amarcolm and the Mother working to convince Captain Iceborn to vote for Etheria to intervene in some outside affairs. It seemed to be connected to this business with Passion, but it struck me that Master Amarcolm seemed to admit responsibility for whatever problem they are trying to fix. Do you know what it might have been about? Captain Iceborn, by the way, has said that he will not interfere with the resurrection plan, although he does not like it." "And one last thing, if I may be so bold as to pry," the gnome is getting a lot off his chest, apparently "what was it that Sir Pigley wished you to help him with? We saw a bit of conversation between the two of you just now, and I shouldn't like to think of him being in trouble."
  20. Yeah, but I'm pretty sure Shakespeare was making a Biblical reference.... Hahahaha, thanks all! One of these days I will figure out how to sleep again....
  21. You might be right! Hahahaha. We are home from the hospital and all is well; work is giving me the next two weeks off for the most part - well, this week and next week, anyway. Hopefully I'll find a way to keep pace.
  22. Matthias watches the conversation between Pigley and Piglina in equal parts awe and confusion, the temporal anomaly of the island still not entirely sensible. "Sir Pigley?" he replies, and then the vision is gone. As Hybros and the anthropomorphic mage dialog, Matthias gets the feeling that Piglina knows who he is, even if he does not know her. When the opportunity presents itself, he does his best to make an introduction. "My apologies, Lady Piglina, I do not believe we have met. My name is Matthias." Doffing his hat in salute for just a moment, he presses ahead with questions. "I believe we've just seen you speaking with a friend of mine - Sir Pigley? Do you know Master Russel as well?"
  23. Matthias nods in agreement with Hybros' assessment of necromancy. "And, Captain Iceborn, you forget that death is only true because life is also true. True enough that you have sought it by any means available, beyond the truth of death. The Norn's protection was not something I asked for, and when I drank of the Fountain I did so in an attempt not only to preserve my life, but the lives of my friends. I could not have guessed the power of the waters then, and I cannot now. Perhaps time will tell, when I have lived as long as such a worshiper of death as yourself." The gnome's face softens throughout his speech, as he realizes some of the truths in Iceborn's words - and realizes that he has joined the man in a tiring, endless existence. "In any case, I thank you for this opal, and we thank you for speaking openly with us." The gnome looks at Hybros, closer to eye level than with many heroes. "Master Hybros, should we away to find this Piglina?" This post brought to you by free hospital wifi!
  24. Thanks for all the well-wishes, thoughts, and prayers folks - our son was born about 11:30 am Korea time this morning, healthy and happy, and Mom is doing well too!
