[MOC] The Skull Island - Remake of 70411: Treasure Island
zinnn replied to zinnn's topic in Pirate MOCs
Guys and gals (and @Yperio_Bricks in particular) - I've just realised I made a mistake and the soldier's boat shouldn't be blue. The original colour of 70411's boat is Dark Blue Don't know how I missed that. I'm exporting new images right now with that variant, but may also create images with red and brown variants. I actually really like how the Blue boat stood out, the Dark Blue is not as bold. Thank you! Appreciate your kind words :) My next MOC idea is to further expand the POBB universe - since they're crashed on an island, I want to focus on this remote habitat. I'm actually considering creating an Islander set, to go with the totem that's buried in the sand... Since the release of the Island Warrior minifig in the CMF series 11, I've been craving to create something for him. Thank you! I think I've spent hours trying to nail that skull, to make it look less goofy (like in Lego sets) and more menacing-looking. I'm really pleased how it looks now :) Many thanks! -
Does anyone have a Studio file for this set?
-
Beautiful! Love the island with the buried treasure, but I sort of wish you reworked the 40566 set a bit more, to make it look a bit less “modern” and give it a rougher makeover. Also, while 40566 does remind me of 6258, the 6254’s cave is missing from here, I wish you’d expand it slightly to give a nod to that set? Then again, it’s a fantastic display build. Sadly, I doubt Lego would ever release it, the water alone is so detailed!

What's wrong with the blue boat Also - now I have it next to the POBB, maybe I will add coconuts to those trees in the end. When designing it I was cautious not to go overboard with the piece count... -

Thank you! Btw here's a render of how the island looks like next to the Barracuda Bay, to give you an idea of its size (real photo coming soon, need to re-build my POBB): -
can you elaborate?

Photoshop, multiple images edited and merged into one. That's obviously a nod to 70411 ;D -
Currently Bricklink only has 1 entry for the bat piece https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?id=1766#T=S&O={"iconly":0} Today I found out there are two slightly different moulds (that I know of), when trying to connect them to the 2L bar with stop ring: One (I assume the old model) sits above the stop ring (left), and the newer one lets you press it down the bar all the way to the stop ring (right), meaning the hole inside it is bigger. Also they differ in texture, with the newer one (again on the right) being more matte and feels more textured: Does anyone know how to report it to Bricklink so a new, alternative entry can be created?

a-mazing, thank for the Studio file, I was actually thinking about creating it in Studio myself - you saved me a ton of time! Offtopic - but do you also happen to have the POBB studio file? I started to work on it, but it takes a long time. -

Yes, instructions are on their way - the set contains only existing pieces which should be easily available. -

Cannon and croc are the two things I decided to skip in this build (from the original 70411). My idea is that this skull island is not a place where the pirates would reside permanently, install a cannon and defend their loot there. It's more like a hiding spot - a place where you come to bury the treasure for the dark hour and leave. That's why I decided to stash a musket and a cutlas there instead, and leave the cannon out. Hopefully the skull shape of the island will deter any potential visitors that pass by ;) When I take photos of the real thing (it's sitting on my desk now, just needs a couple more pieces, waiting for a Bricklink order), I will add a cannon for comparison if you'd like. But tbh if I had to add something to this set, it'd be a small fireplace. It may surprise you but I did a fair bit of testing of that bridge/jetty - you can carry the whole set around without supporting the jetty and the small side-island - it won't detach itself, unless you really REALLY try. Also placing a minifig on the jetty is safe - again, tried and tested. Thank you! I submitted it as a contest entry, but after re-reading the rules now changed it to regular MOC thread, as I started planning and drafting some elements of this set end of last year, so I guess it’s not eligible. But the contest finally made me sit down and put this idea together. -

Would you be able to show how it looks with the set? Providing you have it already... -
you're a star @Alexandrina thank you! I tried reporting this new mould to Bricklink but I think it won't happen: https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1420165

I see your point, but because this set is supposed to be small, with low piece count, I don't think there's a need for more rocks. Personally I'd even try to get rid of one of the layers of sand (tan plates), to reduce the piece count even more :)
-
I've just noticed that some of my bats don't have Lego logo printed on the back of their wings - is that common? Can some of you folks check your pieces.
-
I disagree, the rock looks fine as it is, I’ve been to many sandy beaches that had some random rocks around. IMHO the set looks great.

I just realised there was a thread like this one, and with a poll as well! Maybe mods can merge both? @Mister Phes / @Marooned Marin ?
-
But the whole point of this original set was to show it's a building (or whatever is left of it), not a shipwreck

[ENTRY] 1872 Imperial Guard Camp - Remake 2023
zinnn replied to MyFirstMOC-Hun's topic in Pirate MOCs
As much as I love this entry, I still think it should be slightly re-done, to make sure the walls are more stable and connect them, maybe with the Hinge Plate 1 x 4 Swivel (2429 / 2430) piece. Like it was done in the Treehouse set. -

Fantastic fix, so simple yet lifts the whole set so much. I'm still mind blown Lego messed this one up so bad. -

Perfect small-ish set! Love the update:) one last thing I’d change is the black jetty but I understand it’s designed to go with the new Eldorado Fortres. overall you nailed it :)- 25 replies

Scallywag Pirate appreciation thread - best Lego pirate ever (?)
zinnn replied to zinnn's topic in LEGO Pirates
Here you go. The original design is still way way better IMHO, also that head is meant for this bald/bandana piece ;) Here's also comparison with modern bandana: -
@MyFirstMOC-Hun random question: why are you using here two tiles (1x3 and 1x1) instead of 1x4 tile? Also, could you take a photo from the back of the set?

I love the statue design, and the fact that you changed and upgraded the original look. Especially that slope/beak piece and the "eyebrow" slopes give the head a slightly scary look.
