There is no motor in the engine housing all functions are HOG

There is no room at this scale for  a motor or battery box.

My version is a freelance rendition based on a Volvo side boom pipe layer, which uses a hydraulic cylinder to move the boom in & out.

Most machines use wire rope cables to move the boom.

In the future I might make a larger scale version, I have a suitable under carriage with motors from an old project, just needs to top part building.

MK 2 version consigned to parts storage

New Engine casing built using Technic parts. Model is non rotating but could be made to be so by HOG. 

Dimensions as per contest rule i.e max 10,000 studs.

Model with boom, counterweight & cabin stowed equals :- 30 High x 16 wide x 20.5 long = 9840 cubic studs.

Track units improved:-

Just like the real machines both track units can be removed ready for the transporting the upper sections to another site.

Some side boom machines can jack up to allow a low bed trailer to back up and carry the main unit. Also helps keep the load weight down.

Previous track centres were 14 L to get even tension of the track. Tracks are now 15L long with 24 T gears at each end.

Track in contact with the ground is supported by by a 11L Flip Flop beam with a 11L black beam to support the upper track run.

Originally I wanted the upper section to rotate and now building a mock up to see if this is feasible and still keep all the other functions the same.

I was unable to get a suitable pivot point for the boom which has to be on the rotating section, due to parts touching the tracks etc.

So Reverted to fixed a under carriage.  

New progress
. Added dummy engine housing. and a hand crank to speed up the rope drum for the hook hoist.

New measurements :-     30H x 16W x 20L  = 9600 cubic studs

Progress update.

Added dummy engine housing which powers the hydraulics and tracks.

Added drive & boom lights.

Added hand crank to speed up the rope drum for the boom hook hoist.

Boom cabin moved over by 1L to stay clear the boom.

Boom drivers cabin improved and two mini figures added.

Lego Warning stripes added to counterweight.

Fold down ladder added for access to the boom cabin, Ladder can be swung up to keep within stud limit.

Good job.

But I can't hlep myself, it looks too much like from City theme. Definately not from Technic.

One of Jim's contest rules state that some studded parts and panels are okay, but model team is not permitted.

My build is Mostly Technic parts with minimal other parts.

I could remove the dummy engine and have the vehicle use a long electrical lead as do some large construction machines.

I could also remove the cabin and have a mini figure use a remote device to control it !

The recent TECHNIC 42141 set use a mixture of technic with minimal other parts.

Perhaps Jim can rule if my build infringes the contest rules.

Don't get me wrong, in general it is not about that, if I look in details, I see, that it is mostly technic, but my eyes see city set.

Looks beautiful. It resembles a set of Lego City because the two most visible parts (boom and cockpit) are made entirely of system parts. But I'm not suggesting changing anything.

Looks really good. I hope you'll start adding more photos with each update :P

You should add 1x1 round plates with bar hole on the end of the boom to secure those lights. It's done this way in 60287 tractor for its roof light.

I have also moved them further apart from the boom.

Side Boom Pipe Layer Update:-

Following comments about my build resembling a City set I have decided to change a few sections of my Side Boom Pipe layer using Technic parts.

Side Boom:-
Original non Technic boom removed and replaced by a 100% Technic version.
Took a while to get pivot points correct to get full retraction to vertical & to operating positions, now achieved.
Boom is still 30 studs high when stowed vertical.

Drivers cabin
Now removed and driver now sits in open air !!
Platform retracts as before but should I still add side rails for safety ?

Dummy Engine Block to be retained  as the exhaust pipe is a technic Part.

Diamensions remain the same i.e. 30 x 16.5 x 20 = 9900 cubic. studs.

Only has 1 pin hole & 2 axel holes. If the original boom is OK I can soon fit it again.

Personally, I prefer the Technic solution. While the "City" solution might look better, it just doesn't feel right in a Technic model. Have we ever seen something like that?

So, is it allowed? Well, I am not really sure where we draw the line. I am inclined to say yes, but on the other hand it feels a bit like circumventing the rules. I prefer you stick to the Technic boom.

Re Original Boom.

I put the top works with the 2 pulleys somewhere safe and just spent some time trying to remember where I put them !!!!!

In this case, maybe You could try to make it more triangular. Maybe even from axles, axle connectors. Load is from top, so it should hold together.

Tried using axle connectors & axles to build a triangular boom but was not possible as the angles on connecters don’ twork even when using a no. 3 type.axle connector.

Now built a new triangular boom with diagonal bracing, using only Technic parts.
Top part is a fly boom with pulley & lights mounted on it.

Boom height when vertical is now 29 studs which gives me a bit more room to play with for the other two dimensions.

Measuring beams made for height, width, length.

Thanks, took awhile to to achieve.

Dimension frame.

Frame built that just fits over my Side Boom Pipe Layer model. Showing that it is well within contest rule limit of 10,000 Cubic Studs.

With boom, control platform, counterweight & hook stowed. The dimensions are:- 18 wide x 19 long x 29 high = 9918 cubic studs.

Some minor changes made to the dimensions:-

Length, Width & Height to maximise cubic studs which are now 31 high x 20 long x 16 wide =  9920 cu. studs.

Lego warning stickers & lights added front & rear.

Larger pully wheel now fitted which gives exactly 31 studs height.

New studs check frame made.

Progress Final update:-

Finally satisfied with the build after some changes made to the boom and controls.

Large pulley fitted to the head of the boom and Boom height reduced by 1L to  30L.

2 x 2 round bricks previously used a as control knobs removed and replaced by 20T bevel gears which give me a better hand grip.

Boom, Hook & Counterweight  fully retracted, and Testing frame adjusted to suit and dimensions confirmed..

Now 30 high x 20 long x 16.5 wide = 9900 cubic studs.

Time to tidy up my Lego work area  and return unsued parts to storage drawers !!

We need some more pictures of the finished model. Looks great so far, but would like a bottom view as well as a better view of the gearing of the functions.
