Which set should I buy?

Recommended Posts

I am currently contemplating on which of these two sest to buy.

I know everyone would go for the arocs, but given my circumstances I don't know which one to choose.

First of all I want the excavator because I need more yellow parts, tracks, and i'm just loving  the orange peel style grabber.

I also want the arocs because I need more 62.4x20 wheels, it has the pneumatic v2 system, and alot of new parts that I dont have.

If you need the wheels and the yellow, I would say go for 42009 while it's still available at non-scalper prices, and go to Bricklink for the orange peel parts.

That way you get both of your main needs in one box, and you'll probably save some money.

If you already own a 42009, I would say go for the Arocs and see if you can get the yellow parts / tracks you need from Bicklink. In the end, I believe you'd be

happier with the Arocs and all of its exclusive new parts first, because yellow is yellow...and it's never going away.

Hey, thanks for the idea of buying the 42009 crane. But to me it looks like it mostly has large yellow plates and wing peices because I need more lift arms.

Also, I think your right about about buying the arocs for the new parts and going to bricklink for the orange peel parts.

I would guess there are close to 200 yellow liftarms in 42009. Plus heaps of liftarms in other colours.

You can see the parts list for 42009 right here. There is a small chance it may not be entirely accurate, but the numbers shouldn't be

too drastically different. As you can see, there is quite a bit of yellow in there. In contrast, 42006 has significantly fewer yellow LAs.

Honestly, you can't go wrong with anything here. If you're even a little bit like any one of us on this board, you'll eventually own all 3 of these

sets anyway. The only thing I can't stress enough is the fact that once they sell out at the LEGO store and other major retailers...prices tend

to skyrocket, and you'll be forced to pay much more or simply miss out on the set in question. So at this point, the "smart" thing to do would

be to go with 42009 or 42006, considering the Arocs just came out.

I bought a 2ndhand 42006 earlier this year, and finally got around to building it with my son. it's an excellent build

I have to say - it's bigger than what I expected!

I own both. 42006 is an ok build and has some fun features. Honestly though I found 8043 to be a much better set for parts, challenge, and playability. If you're looking for a parts set for tracks and yellow parts 8043 is much better. Obviously being an out of production set it costs about as much as the Arocs now, but it gives you options.

2 more large linear actuators over 42006

4 motors

2 IR receivers

2 IR transmitters

More tracked links

The Arocs set is really cool and I've thoroughly enjoyed the build. I spread it over 11 hours and enjoy all of the new pneumatics. I learned several new techniques from this kit as well.

Are you interested just in parts, or are you considering prices as well, because 42006 and arocs are few price categories apart.

As for parts, currently there is no alternative to arocs for pneumatics.

As other people mentioned, 42009 is great set for parts you mentioned, tires and liftarms, and there is no set that is even near considering number of gears.

And you can probably get both 42009 and 42006 both for the price of arocs, but that will probably change soon, because 42006 is already retired,

but there is still no problem finding it in stores, and 42009 will be retired this year.

That way you will get plenty of large and small LA's also.

You can also consider 42042 for tracks and grabber, and new gearbox parts.

There is no easy (read: cheap) way to have all the things you mentioned, so it is up to you to define priorities and budget.

I'm not sure I agree with the above - it is possible to get all the parts OP wants without going near the price of 42043. At least in the UK, 42009 is very close to £100 compared to 42043 which is about £160, so I guess it depends where OP lives.

42009 is the best suggestion because you get a lot of yellow parts and the 62.4x20 wheels that you want. Specialised parts like tracks and orange peel grabber can very easily be picked up on ebay or bricklink, and ebay is often cheaper.

For parts I would buy 42009 and then bricklink the rest. An alternative if you want power function is buy 42030 when you find them for a good price. Sometimes you can find a 42030 for a price lower than the PF parts + wheels together and then you will get a big bunch of yellow liftarms as a bonus :)

I would go for the arocs. You surely can get yellow pieces from other sets and the claw from 42042 is pretty much the same as the 42006
