Here's hoping for some new train parts or cool, useful prints! (there aren't many stickers in the January CITY wave, so it's possible we'll see some nice ones!) Supposedly the tram has 693 parts, according to the CITY thread. Edited January 9 by Murdoch17 Quote

samsz_3 Posted January 10 Posted January 10 With the Arctic and Police trains, and now a steam train, I like the direction City is going. Quote

It was mostly an old style design so that is at least 1/2 the parts that a modern design would have, but it also has a base that was maybe 10-20 parts. Of course any train set needs some platform to consume the part count, so maybe that's a wash. Anyway, there's hope that this has enough parts to be interesting. Even better if this represents Lego releasing individual rolling stock sets again. 6 hours ago, Satisfied said: Are there no regular passenger and freight trains this year? They undergo a replacement every four years My first thought, City looks like it is moving away from "train only" theme trains and the replacements are already here in the form of the arctic and police trains (I do NOT have any inside info, just hypothesizing here). But thinking about it, I also have a long shot guess: I recall about a year ago someone had posted a thread about the next power system that will replace PuP. There was an official Lego webpage that had a WeDo type classroom setting and kids playing with what looked to be self-contained motor+battery+communications. I haven't seen anything further about that power system (but I'm also kind of in the dark) beyond the fact that the clone makers are now offering such motors along side their PF clones. So maybe the arctic and police are a short term bridge (one year or even one city cycle?) before the next power system comes out. I would even hazard a guess that they are using these as a test to see if aligning trains with other city sub-themes sells more, which I would think has some truth (train people will by trains no matter what, arctic people will only buy trains if it is in theme). Only problem with that idea is that Lego has such long lead times between design and release that if arctic and police are to test the market it would be a few years before any response hits the shelves. Yes, maybe you are right. Maybe Lego plans to stop regularly releasing new trains. After all, for train enthusiasts, four years is too long a wait. It would be beneficial to release new trains every year, and various new train themes are being introduced. The police train has already been introduced, and I wonder if there will be themes related to firefighting and ambulance services in the future. However, I still hope there will be regular freight trains Quote

The description I saw said locomotive, tender, passenger car, so pretty much in line with the 650-800 part Hogwarts Expresses. Maybe they got bored of redesigning it red every time. Though descriptions that leak do sometimes turn out to be completely incorrect on factual points. Quote

I counted the Hogwarts Expresses the 2010 one without the car and it’s 519 pieces, while the 2018 one without the station is at least 545 or something like that. I’m hoping it’s based off something like The Flying Scotsman or Mallard. Quote
TeddytheSpoon Posted January 11 Posted January 11 Oooh, steam train! I hope it looks alright. Am I right in thinking that would be the first non-licensed LEGO steamer since the Emerald Night (at least one that gets a wide release)? Quote

Klaus-Dieter Posted January 12 Posted January 12 Thanks for the news! 🙂 I'm curious about the outcome of the new tram and retro steam train. The two questions here are: Will they contain Powered Up or will they be only push-along trains? And will the Smart Brick be included? Which concerns a cargo train and a regular passenger train: Could it be that Lego moves away from the every-four-years tradition? Quote

RedBrick1 Posted January 16 Posted January 16 I do wonder what 'retro' refers to. Retro in reference to real-world vintage, or possibly in reference to old 12V and 9V LEGO styles? Looking forward to this one! Quote
Vilhelm22 Posted Saturday at 02:54 PM Author Posted Saturday at 02:54 PM Definitely curious about some of these! I’m looking forward to seeing the new tram particularly - I’ve liked some of their city trams but I thought the last one was a little disappointing. I’ve updated the list on the first page. The latest copy of Blocks magazine included an interview with the current head of City, who took over back in 2023/2024 with a 3 year plan: 2024: Get the City theme back on track. I’d say this has definitely been successfully accomplished. 2025: Focus on and improve key City themes: Police, Fire and Construction. There’s definitely been a good return of construction sets in the past year or two, and this might explain the police train. 2026: New sets, new parts. Perhaps this is where trains is headed? The end of the passenger/freight series, more variation in trains, and maybe new train-related pieces appearing in 60511? I think whatever happens, the 2024 goal of getting City back on track has been hugely successful in my opinion, and with some new train sets of a kind we’ve not seen in City since its creation in 2004 and seemingly more to come, I’m excited to see where it goes. Definitely agreed on this - I was just thinking the other day that I should start buying City sets again, as the quality of designs seems to be excellent! Given what a broad church City seems to be these days, what with Arctic, space and jungle sets among other things, I'm really looking forward to seeing what they can do with these train designs!
