The Charge of the Light Brigade

Here's my MOC on the Charge of the Light Brigade. I'm not sure if it should go here or in the history forum, but since it's using imperial pieces, I put it here. Moving on:

During the battle of Balaclava against the Russians, Lord Raglan, the British general during the Crimean War, noticed that the Russians had captured the British and Ottoman cannons in the north of Balaclava. He ordered a messenger to tell Lord Cardigan, commander of the British Light Brigade to attack them. The message got jumbled on the way there, and the Light Brigade ended up charging into the wrong cannons, which were well fortified. The Light Brigade were destroyed.

Very nice job. *y* Kenobi looks great as a Russian officer. I really like the cannonn design.

This reminds me of a movie about this battle that was mixed with real scenes and some political cartoon animation. I think this belongs in the Adventure and History Forum.

Although a somewhat simple moc in what it contains, I feel its showcasing some great aspects; including the custom stickers, and the cotton ball smoke.

And on that note, usually the cotton smoke effect is well, er, just plain lame, but as I look at this you seem to pulled it off greatly, it looks very nice *wub*

Not a bad MOC, though I remember reading somewhere that the Charge itself was really only a failiure because of the loss of life, and that they actually took the guns. Anyway, damn good!

That's the second time someone's called me Lord of Pies.. :'-( :-P

I was originally going to make an MOC of a painting of French cannons, but I thought it was a little boring. I converted the cannons I made for that into ones for the Russians. The rest is just how I imagined the Charge of the Light Brigade :-)

Very nice recreation of the battle! That Qui-Gon officer makes me realise just how perfect he'd be as a sailor, for some reason, I think it's the hat. A fine choice there and I would agree that the cotton method actually works here, which is quite an accomplishment. *y*

I absolutely loved this MOC. *wub* It's my favourite of everything you've done despite what a tragedy this was in British military history and here's why:

1. I think the paintings were beginning to limit your originality Tiny Pies because you were always limited to the scene involved and the perfect torsos and pieces etc. This way you can take incidents in history and have much greater free will with what's available to present the scene.

2. The smoke as ever is a winner, especially with the red bush, though from your narration was this Sir Nadroj's idea first?

3. I'm always pushing to see historical representation, hence my work on the flags and it's great to see people using those torsos and trying as best as one can to replicated authentically. Your Russian artillery officer in particular is a very nice touch as by this stage we can start to expect changes in dress, hats and weaponry - the Crimean War was at the very end of what I consider the Napoleanic era, the industrial war era was dawning at the later half of the 19th century which is seen in aspects of the American Civil War for example.

Can I suggest that you do a few more scenes from the Crimean War before you have to break up and use those pieces elsewhere. I'd love to see interpretations of specific wars, colonies, battles etc and there really isn't enough of that on this site.

Especially since this picture was the starting point for my interest in modeling historical figures.

I saw it in an Airfix magazine and a rebuild with 54mm soldiers.

By the way: Some months ago i read a book about battles and failures which caused the loss of them. Maybe from my youth and the film I saw I was in the opinion that the battle was a total disaster and caused heavy casualties. But that's not true. Although the attack was nonsens the landscape hinders too heavy losses and also the total numbers of victims was far beyond the number I thought. Very interesting ....

Maybe I find the title of the book since it has also very interesting material about other battles.

Back to the scene. Very fine made although not a painting. Maybe someone finds a painting which fits ...

Very nice work, and nice to see my stuff getting a bit of use. Also, I have a Crimean section in my BS, which isn't particularly comprehensive, and I can't remember what most of the torsos actually represent. But there it is anyway:
