  1. I like the remote opening sides of the truck. Very smart
  2. I would give it to him. The set has a lot of variety, so will be a good start for him. He is fourteen, he should be able to build it ok. He will understand what it is all about later, when he has it built.
  3. Nice work. Are the outriggers at the back working independently of each other for uneven ground, or do they both go down at the same rate?
  4. The hard piping was from 8829 Dune Blaster. Although hard piping of different lengths can be found in 8479 and some of the pneumatics sets.
  5. Scale is 1:9.9 Grab was a better option than the bucket. Although it is a bit heavier, it worked well picking up the pens. Someone wanted to see the mini LA positions. This is the best photo I have. http://www.brickshel...CB/dsc_2358.jpg
  6. I present my JCB compact track loader. 2 XL for drive, M for lift, M for tip, M for autovalve and compressor for third service (grab). It is powered from mains to battery box for the time being. The building process featured numerous challenges in fitting all the motors in. I also wanted to see if the offset single boom would work. There is a little flex in it, as well as some quiver, due to the mounting position. Comments are welcome
  7. As someone has already mentioned, I would not purchase based on the photos, or even the photos in the bricklink store.
  8. Sorry to hear of your great loss, but it is also great to see the measure of support there is from the eurobricks community. Psalm 46 - God is our strength and refuge
  9. I built a combine a few years ago, but never managed to pack in as much as this guy/girl. I love the reciprocating finger bar knife at the front. Surely it must be time soon for TLG to put out another combine?
  10. I think the part design is good. But I do question whether a printed part will have the necessary strength compared to a moulded part. It might prompt TLG to have a look at these parts for a future flagship machine.
  11. Looking at the hand rails, they are much too thick for the model. This could have been fixed with some rigid piping, which is used for pneumatics, or some of the thinner rods which are used in city and creator sets. I know that 8265 used similar handrails, but in this location, along the rear on both sides, well it is just too prominent
  12. On initial observations, I am a bit disappointed with the loader, but maybe things will look brighter when we get more information and pictures. Also the rear mudguards of the pickup could do with an axle pin and a red bushing to finish them off on the back angle. As has been pointed out the mirrors are not folded out. At a public event, you would at least hope that everything was right for the display
  13. I cut one of my 24-16 differentials into a 24T clutch gear. It is a great job and was needed for one particular application. Surely it is only a matter of time before TLG gives someone a Stanley knife in the factory and tells them to make a few?
  14. Now that is a very smart cab, and should have been on the skip truck from the start. The only problem is that TLG would not have put a similar cab on two very recent models - 8109 and this one. The sleeker arms are also a big improvement. When you see what could be done, it makes you wonder why the model was launched as it was. I suppose price point is what determines parts used etc.
  15. I think this "offset differential" for the rear axles will have a started a new craze for 2014. Just watch this space... Very good model, well done.
  16. Hey Jeroen, I know what it feels like to get so far and discover that some functions do not work as expected. Then the problem is that if you try to rework, then you can actually compromise on something else. It's not my crane, so I would be looking at it differently, but I do know that you have fitted in some amazing functions. For example the dual mode steering on the shifting axle, as well as the 4x3 function gearbox, as well as other features. My opinion would be to present the MOC despite it's failings, and then go away and rebuild the features into a crane with a smaller functioning boom. Well done on what you have done anyway. (You know we don't always get MOCs right first time) & have a happy New Year
  17. It is interesting to note how many more recent sets are being sold on "Ebay" without the box. It is also interesting to note that many older sets are still being sold complete with the box. Do you think there will be a small crisis in years to come on the used market, with boxes being discarded and consequently pieces being lost or instructions damaged or lost? Will the new style box survive a couple of house moves, attic storage, and what about the pieces?
  18. I like the black. Now all you need is a couple of chain guns, and a rocket pod below, and it would look very similar to "the lady". I might gather up the black panels and do a colour swap on mine.
  19. My first set was 8859 - Tractor. It has a clear plastic cover that kept everything secure to a potential buyer. I remember spending a good few minutes admiring everything before I even undid the plastic cover. Also you may remember the lego bulldozer 856. It had an integrated pouch in the lid for storing the instruction book Because of their construction, the boxes were able to be stacked, and would not collapse under their own weight. Changed days!
  20. If you want your pins to be less noticeable, then there are two main colours which will hide them. Black or blue. I like my black for that purpose, and it is the colour which I have the most of. But you do need other colours to define the black, look at 8868, 8485, 8880 for example.
  21. It's very good, especially with limited parts.
  22. Yep, I could have built a "nicer" crane, but you then end up with a hook instead of a grab. I could have gone all pneumatic for the crane, but that was too easy, and I did want some measure of challenge. The gearbox of the crane is the main structure, and I know it is not overly neat, but it works well, which imo is more important. Thanks for all the comments.
  23. We have been able to finish some of our MOCs which we have been working at. This one is an off-loader crane, where three motors power all the functions. One XL motor drives the main arm lift, grabber rotation, grabber open/close. A geared old style square motor operates the crane rotation, and a m-motor drives the dipper.A pneumatic pump sorts out the rear jacks and a HOG wheel operates the steering. It is a great challenge to play with, but it was nice to get the grabber rotation and open/close powered, instead of a double bevel gear sticking out somewhere.Enjoy.
  24. If you wanting the other wheels to rotate at the same ground speed, then just put a differential in between the drive to the half track and the other axles. The differential will do it's job and balance out the drive to the half track and the other axle. But you need to just send drive to the differential only. Also if you can get the gear ratios right so that the ground speed of both axles is as close a possible, then there would be less slippage in the differential.
