42083 - Bugatti Chiron
allanp replied to Jurss's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
What is this?! A new size of clutch gear? And a new cylindrical cam piece that changes gears in a similar sorta way to the way it's done in real life?! After seeing the new valve in 42080 THEY LISTENED AGAIN!! Ok ok, so it's only one other size of clutch gear, bringing our total to only two whereas a real gearbox has a different size for each gear, and all gears besides reverse are mounted on only two shafts, not the dozen or so axles and pins seen here bringing many problems with needless complexity, friction, unintuativeness and so on BUT to do that in only one set would require alot of new parts, possibly too many for a single set, so this is a step in the right direction and I applaud it. This set is fast approaching a level that would satisfy even the wild speculations and overly high expectations placed on the Porsche when it's very first camo pictures were released. Well done TLG! -
For some reason I always thought 8880 looked more like a Lamborghini than any other car. Guess I'm the only one Have to agree with @Bublehead where parts are concerned. And also with the sentiment that studless remakes don't capture the essence or nostalgia of the original, which is why I think updated homages built to modern standards are better than straight remakes. Yeah, this idea is one I've been thinking about but working 60 hours a week and being lead singer/only guitarist in a band leaves me with so little time to design anything.
-
Studless remakes could be good, but not just where they replace a studded beam for a studless beam and call it job done. 8880 for example would be a black supercar (resembling an anventador) with yellow stripe, V8 in the rear, 4 wheel drive, 4 wheel steering, pop up headlights, white interior and a minimum of 4 speed gearbox, though could also be 5 + R. But redesigned from the ground up so it's sleeker, lower (if we're honest, the ground clearance for the original 8880 was redicolously high for a supercar), and yes, completely filled in with panels. Thinking about it, maybe the yellow stripe should be changed to silver. 8480 ide make a little larger to accommodate a satalite with two or three stage folding wings and a canadarm with an extra pivot point, filled in with panels and more comprehensive control surfaces. However I think the most interesting remake could be control center 2. It would be great to remake the helicopter with full cyclic and collective rotor controls, still mounted to a control arm like the original and counter balanced perfectly with battery box and a complex set of control levers so you could turn on the rotors and with only the collective controls it would actually "take off", and using the cyclic it can move forward and backward. It would also come with a winch, the aim would be to be able to "fly" the helicopter and lower the winch to collect a load of some kind. This would certainly be the most difficult. Anyone care to try?!

Lets talk color vomit

@Bublehead You say the numbered bags are for kids but I really like the numbered bags, maybe I'm just a big kid I fully understand that Lego technic is mainly for kids, the smaller sets probably only for kids. But I think the colour coding is to help the kids argument isn't entirely valid. I say this because adults make mistakes too even with the colour coding, and I've found parts are still hard to find even with the colour coding. I build many sets from days of old and modern times, the ease of finding parts seems to depend only on how many parts there are to search though, the colour coding makes no difference. A frustrating building experience, weather it's because parts are hard to find in a pile or because a mistake was made (using a 9M axle in place of a 7M axle which means you can't find the 9M axle when it's needed later on) is certainly something to be avoided as much as possible. I fully understand that to have a frustrating building experience for kids or adults is far worse than having unrealistic and ugly colours all over the place. And besides Technic isn't supposed to be about looks right? But to this I say generic colour coding isnt the best solution to this problem. Numbered bags (where there is one bag one, one bag two, one bag three, not five or six bag one's) is a much better solution. But if there must be colour coding, the BWE had very clever colour coding in some places where the yellow axles were used for the yellow hand railings. That was great. But why then do you need to use the same colour coding throughout the whole build when you can have an entirely different colour coding scheme in each numbered bag? With numbered bags you only have to search through and select the parts contained within one bag at any one time. So in bag one, 7M axles could be grey, in bag 2 they could be green (if you are building a green model for instance) and so on. This means all axles can come in all colours, just like all plates and bricks in regular sets can come in all colours, giving the designers more colours to choose from, meaning more flexibility, and it can remove generic colour coding and replace it with a more tasteful colour coding which matches better with whatever part of the model you are building. -

All bodywork and no gearbox and new drive train parts makes Chiron a dull boy very anxious to see what's inside. -

I can understand if links get banned, I mean, it's basically the same as just showing the image I guess. It's a shame but I get where TLG is coming from regarding copy cats, and besides they want to show it off as it's meant to look. It's kind of a shame the people's first view of it was a distorted picture as it may have affected some all important first impressions unfairly. Still glad to see it though! -

Back end looks crazy well done! I don't see any paddle shifters and the gear stick in the middle appears to only move forward and backward by a small amount, so I wonder what's going on with the gearbox! -

Where's Harrison Fords blade runner tech when you need it? You could probably read the instructions with that! -

Lets talk color vomit
allanp replied to aminnich's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I see two issues, colour coding of parts which makes them easier to find and exterior main colour choices that some would find ugly. The first issue, the colour coding of parts is what I would call colour vomit and I just don't find it helpful. I built sets with lots of colour vomit and sometimes it's very difficult to find the part you need, it doesn't seem to help me at all. Even with all its colour coding the build for 42069 was quite frustrating at times due to not being able to find parts. I find a much better solution is numbered bags. Take a sets piece count, divide by about 250, and that's how many numbered bags you have. So the rough terrain crane would have about 16 bags, numbered 1 to 16, with roughly 250 parts in each bag. Doing this would negate the need for colour coding, make builds much more fun and would help limit the chances of making a mistake by using the wrong part, as you are greatly limited by the amount of parts to choose from. But maybe the reason is not only to make parts easier to find, but also to help with the building of the model. I recently bought a second hand 8880 off eBay, oh lord you wouldn't believe the build. For one, bevel gears were place in the right place, but backwards so they wouldn't mesh. The chain that drives the engine was connected to the steering instead of the engine and so on. I get that there are some out there that do struggle with more complex builds, then complain to Lego and their friends that the model is no good, but does colour coding help? It doesn't prevent diffs being put in backwards or bevel gears in the wrong way round. But then I don't have access to TLGs call centre data. Whatever the reason I'm so glad the 5x7 frames are coming in more colours, you'd struggle not to find one of those from a set. The second issue is the gordy colours. 42070 never appeared on any top seller lists that I could see with its Gordy and stricking baby blue colours, RC and everything else which many proclaim to be great selling points for kids, whereas the Mack Anthem in its far more adult and tasteful dark grey appears to be more popular. Looking at other toys, the ones in striking gordy colours are the completely fantasy type robot mechs and fighting cars driving round loops and fighting death spinners and so on. The more reality based toys, like those based on real cars, trucks, diggers and so on tend to have much more tasteful and realistic colours. -

Although I'm more interested in what's on the inside, the more I look at the outside the more I like it. Leviathans Chiron is a great MOC, but Lego's version looks like a more thought out finished product using individual parts more efficiently to create a cleaner look. Note the use of the long curved slope pieces used to shape the front as opposed to the many 1x2 beams used in the MOC, and the use of a single wheel arch piece as opposed to the use of many small pieces with all their edges and radii which detract from smooth lines. Of course Leviathan does not have access to new parts in new colours or the luxury of being paid to design a MOC as a day job so I don't want to take anything away from the astounding effort. And some will argue that many small pieces are better than fewer <insert that tiresome argument> (that was supposed to say j u n i o r i s e d, apparently EB knows what I want to say better than I do ) parts, but for me, I like to put together many mechanical parts, that's why I like technic more than creator. So when it comes to non mechanical bodywork, less is more, unless it's something like an American fire truck with all its cool exterior detail of course. Right now both versions look to be not quite pointy enough at the front compared to the real car, but we've been burnt by leaked box art before, remember how 3x11 panels on 42082 looked like 5x11 panels? It seems leaked box art has the effect of making everything look fatter or proportionally less long and sleek as it really is, so maybe the front will look longer and pointier when we see proper images. The exterior also doesn't seem to have quite as much regular Lego bricks as some had feared. There definitely isn't an extra 900 parts to the bodywork compared to the Porsche, so there must be more to the inside mechanisms. Overall this leak has me excited to see more. -

It looks like a Chiron. What I like about the real car isn't it's looks, it's that it's an engineering masterpiece. So for me, all is yet to be revealed. -

Well seeing as real life vehicles aren't powered by a massive hand pump I'm happy to have an on board motor driven pump, ya know, for the authenticity!- 313 replies

I don't recognise the parts used for the disk or the caliper, so I guess they are new parts. If they went though the trouble if making those, is it possible that they are functional?! Ah ah ah wait, must not raise expectations to crazy high levels like I did for the Porsche, just regular high -

It does appear that the cab and crane arm can swivel/slew independently of the front half of the chassis. But I don't see any mechanism to drive it.- 313 replies

I don't own any of the train wheels used for the rollers and have just noticed in the picture how thin their edges are. And if there is no "cage" piece that keeps them separated is there a possibility they could all migrate together, so at times their won't be any rollers to support the weight?- 1,224 replies

I don't think a few kgs if pressure will cause too much damage or wear, not with how slow it will be moving. Obviously more would be better but probably overkill especially considering older turntables have no bearings at all and have a much smaller diameter which increases stress even more. I wonder if the rollers are mounted to anything to keep them spaced apart.- 1,224 replies

Yes, and a pneumatic logic circuit (like 8868-b) would have made it somewhat autonomous. -

The design imprinted into the side of those lovely new valves indicates, at least to me, proportional control of the air flow. Of course the old valves were proportional as well with a bit of skill, but they wasn't really designed to be. So I wonder if these new valves have been designed to be more proportional. Also like the steering arrangement and really like inclusion of on board motor driven pump. But I do very much dislike the colour vomit, it really does look deliberate, not to make it easier to build but to make it look nasty. Colour barf of the small pins and axles is bad enough, but colour barfing the whole thing?! Why do that to what is an otherwise perfect set?! I don't get that, but it's still a day one purchase for me and right now best set of 2018, and changing the colours to something more tasteful will be very easy as all the beams and panels come in many colours, unlike many other parts like pins, gears and axles.- 313 replies
