Well that is a great start! 42043 is my favourite out of those. If you are just starting in technic may I recommend that you DON'T invest too heavily in the RC and PF stuff as I believe it will be replaced with PU (powered up, which is seen in the 2018 trains) in the coming years. Though I should say that until we see technic sets with the new PU system I can't know that for sure. But you have an excellent start there already. -

Well I love it and can hardly wait to buy it. Are there things that could be improved? Depends on your point of view. From my point of view, as I dislike the Mack style of engine, and because they had to make many new parts for this set already, there's not much they could reasonably be expected to do better. Perhaps make the wheels a tiny bit bigger to accommodate 8880 size steering arms and Ackerman geometry, but that's about it. And yes, I like the solution they chose for the rear wing. Would be cool to have it work off a fake brake pedal, but I'm just happy they didn't leave out a proper gearbox in favour of a crappy motorised spoiler! Are there things that could be improved for technic secret weapon number 3, when they can release a whole new batch of new parts? Absolutely, I can think of loads and loads! But that doesn't and shouldn't in any way detract from this set. Knowing that they'll probably be thinking about what to do next already I'll be sure to get my suggestions in now (we want larger 8880 style CV joints (for larger steering angle and higher load capacity) and 8880 sized steering arms for Ackerman geometry, improved handling, less wobblyness and higher quality feel to the steering, larger and stronger diff based on a 36t double bevel as seen in radbot's brickshelf custom parts folder and more sizes of clutch gear ). But that's a far off future. For know I am sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo excited to get my hands on secret weapon 2, 42083, the mighty Bugatti Chiron. -
Great interview. It seems this time questions of colour coding aren't allowed, next year questions of Ackerman steering won't be allowed but it does go back to a question I posted to Jim to ask them, which is, why keep the wheels at EXACTLY 81.6 mm in diameter? In the Porsche rims you can almost fit 8880 length (4M long) steering arms (as opposed to the 3M long we have now) which would reduce wobblyness, improve the feel/handling of the steering and make room for Ackerman. It's just a few more millimeters that's needed, surely they could have done that as they were making new wheels anyway and it would have still been close enough to 1:8 scale. Even the guy from Bugatti said he wanted the wheels to be bigger.

Yeah, I expected there to be axles in the logs. Simply leaving the axles out has to be the easiest mod ever.- 313 replies

Oooooh, excellent work on the render . Just one thing though, WHAT THE HECK?!!! The reason I've commented so many times asking for more sizes of clutch gear is to make gearboxes simpler, requiring less parts, have less friction, more intuative, easy to understand and be more like the real thing where all gears are arranged on only two parallel shafts (with a third shorter one to mount the reverse idler gear) This thing is mental! But like I've already said, to go to that ideal from what we had before in one set would require possibly too many new parts to be made at one time and I'm happy that we got the new 20t clutch and cylindrical cam shifter, so not critisising, just find it kinda funny. What is kinda annoying though is that when they when from an even number system to a more studless friendly odd number system, they made the drive rings longer, meaning a clutch gear, drive ring, clutch gear combo is now 5M long as opposed to only 4M. So to make an 8 speed gearbox with this new system, with many new clutch gears arranged on two shafts would be over 20M in length, which to be fair is still shorter than the complete gearbox in 42083, so maybe it is still feasible to do that with the newer 3M long drive rings, in any case I'm sure it was possible to have reduced the old 4M long system down to 3 meaning an 8 speed gearbox would be only 12M long with only 2 main shafts. Maybe next time -

This is interesting, love how the guy from Bugatti pushed for mechanical interest over just looks. Is this the interview that @Jim gathered questions for? -

Ide happily have a lazy day watching the live build if I wasn't at work, I always like to watch something whilst sorting Lego bits so will definitely watch later, it's much appreciated As for sagging front suspension, it should compress a little under its own weight, but this seems a bit excessive. I do wonder if it's built correctly though as you would think the rear of the car would be heavier. But if you want a reference as to how suspension and steering should feel build the test car from the late 80s. I think the spoiler solution is quite clever as a nod to having to use a key to activate it in the real car. As a mod I wonder if it would be possible to add a brake pedal and have the spoiler work by pressing the brake pedal? -
Looks great for trains, but it's very likely that this won't be what we get for technic. For Technic I am hopeful for separate battery box and receivers, and a battery box that holds AAs, not AAAs. Having a battery box for every two motors, especially when you can't have more than one motor per port, would be a big step backwards. A moc like sheepos land rover would require 4 battery boxes, that's 24 batteries!!! So yeah, think what is needed is an AA battery box with 2 outputs for two receivers with 4 outputs each, so one battery box can power up to 8 motors. Alternatively have an AA battery box with 8 output ports, they are fairly small so should fit on an AA battery box no problem. Or at a bare minimum 4, but 8 would be better. A great upgrade to that would be an 11.1v rechargable li-ion battery pack.

Hahahaha!!!!! But why such garish bright colours like bright red, bright blue, orange, lime and so on. You can use different colours but still make it harmonious. I think part of the reason why I liked technic as a kid and can continue to like it as an adult is because to me it was never just another dumb toy, which may be just a pleasant illusion but the overly bright colours ruins that illusion for me. The 8880 gearbox for the time was great and feels like a real gearbox when it was first released 24 years ago, Chiron gearbox is great with its new pieces, but the colours scream THIS IS A CHILDS TOY which is strange with its 16+ age rating. And I still maintain that, when people are still inserting differentials in backwards despite brightly coloured coding the axles left to right, colour coding doesn't seem to achieve its desired effect. In this case better to have pictures in the instructions showing an example of both the right way with a tick and the wrong way with a big red cross, and big letters saying PAY ATTENTION, or we'll make a Lego jar jar Bink's movie! -
Could be quite good, but I think it would be even better as a massive creator expert set, imagine a creator expert Saturn V rocket sized pneumatic flying Scotsman with all the proper linkages including reversing linkage . Not enough functionality for technic but it would have a ton of detail. B model could be a working pneumatic traction engine with the added bonus of being usable to drive the creator carousel and Ferris wheel.

Technic 2018 Set Discussion
allanp replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
2016 and 2018 are very similar. Hmmmmm Volvo pneumatic excavator Vs pneumatic forest harvester, ide say 2018 set wins due to it new parts. Claas Vs 2018 Volvo Ninjago loader, 2016 wins easily. BWE Vs RTC, 2016 wins for its at the time new parts (the large ring gears, I see no new for 2018 parts yet in RTC) and new subject matter, meaning it's not yet another crane. Porsche Vs Chiron. 2018 wins so far as I can see. The Chiron with its new parts approaches the hype the Porsche generated better than the Porsche did. I guess overall it's a draw which is a great achievement as 2016 was so good, but in 2016 the mighty Arocs was still on the shelf. -

I don't see how the new valves could require an L motor, or how they could be related as the old valve has the ability to go from fully open to fully closed and everywhere in between. What other state could the new valve have that would require the use of a more powerful motor?. But if there are 4 pumps, or if a single pump is geared up 3:1 for example, then the use on an L motor becomes more understandable. A motor pump can generate in excess of 60psi if the seals are good, a pump with that kind of load on it, if you have many of them or if it is geared up can require a fair amount of torque. I remember doing some tests and found that the hose connected to the pump can in some cases torque the pump over to favour one side. Like if you were to disconnect the pump from the crank end the hose would raise or lower that end depending on weather the hose is pushing or pulling on it, depending on how the hose is bent round to fit onto the pump. This has the effect of a small bending force being applied to the pump, which is severe cases can greatly affect the effectiveness of the seals. As the hose will cause more or less bending of the pump depending on where the crank is it is best to have the compression stroke be on the side of the crank where the hose is causing the least amount of bending of the pump. This appeared to be why the pump worked more effectively when the motor turned one way and not the other. Edit @Omikron I didn't know that about the motors only working well in one direction. Will have to find that article.- 313 replies

Could it be that the pump is geared up, or that there are multiple pumps to improve performance (as opposed to the usual single pump) and that's why there's an L motor?- 313 replies

We don't yet have a proper gearbox in the sense of being like real life as it would require many more new parts to achieve, but we do have an excellent step in the right direction towards that and I can't wait to get the Chiron because of it. I'm already thinking of insanely compact sequential 4 speed gearbox for a motorbike, think I can use the new disk brakes for it as well and that's what I really like. New parts that excite my imagination with new possibilities ? -

The rotary cam shifter looks like it would also be good for some starwars greebling, so it's likely it will be released in better colours in future. Hopefully same goes for 20t idler gear. PS, we have the 16t red clutch gear and the 24t white clutch gear. This is a little confusing. What happens when they release a 24t clutch thats like the 16 and 20 tooth clutch gears but its not a 24t clutch gear, but it's a clutch gear with 24 teeth?! How about we use a new name for the gears that work with a driving ring, like maybe idler gears? Crash gears? Hmmmmm -
