The small motor would probably not be used very much in technic. The previous micromotor was only used in two technic sets and I can think of many other new parts that would open up more possibilities and bring more coolness in general to technic. Plus we already have 3 standard motors to choose from, I guess that's why it hasn't been released yet. Wait, I take that back, we may have three motors to choose from, but we don't have three options to choose from. The three standard motors are all big and they're all geared and turn very slowly so we really don't have much choice. You can choose to have your motor big, geared and slow, or bigger, even more geared and slower. That's no choice at all! So, yeah, I really don't know why they haven't released a small motor yet. Ideally we would have two or three better thought out options to choose from, one of them being a tiny, very much geared down motor.

Lost art of orienting bushings?
allanp replied to torso's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I don't think that ring on the new one makes any difference to friction as it fits inside the larger diameter of the technic hole and doesn't make any contact with anything. They are good tho because when sliding multiple parts onto an axle, they are not wide enough so the rings help to space the parts out more accurately. As for orientation, I usually try to have the un-notched end against a non-moving part as I feel the notched end may wear non-moving sides faster. I haven't tested it tho. Edit: Just did a quick measurement, the depth of the ring is about 0.12mm, the depth of the larger diameter of the technic hole is about 0.80mm. -
There are pros and cons to geared and ungeared motors. All pros and cons considered, apart from the servo motor and a tiny micro motor, I would much rather have the motors be ungeared. However, by having a separate planetary gear reduction unit that can fit directly to an ungeared motor you have both options to choose from, plus the added benefit of a planetary gear reduction hub that can be used anywhere, separate from the motor, even right inside a wheel hub.

Well I totally agree with you. Having the motor and planetary gear set as two separate parts would be far better. You would get all the pros of both the geared and ungeared motors combined as you can choose which one you have. You would also have a planetary gear set that could be used in many other places. So if you are feeling especially lazy you could stack a number of gear sets onto the end of the motor and it's job done, or you could not use them and have a cool ungeared motor, which means you could use quite, geartrain protecting belt drives, use the white clutch gear more effectively in any situation by choosing where it should be in the gearing down stage, spin those engines fast so they even sound somewhat authentic (I like to have the motor(s) look like an altenator or supercharger, driving the engine via its fan belts!) and so on.

Problems with 8110!?
allanp replied to Beeman's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
You need to have the diff the other way round, so that the red bushing above is in line with the large gear of the diff. You will notice that the middle portion of the red bushing is a small diameter so it will give enough room for the diff gear. -

Good job. Could you try using the newer style hubs? They may allow the wheels to wiggle a bit but the cv joint turns with far less friction so overall they may be better.- 31 replies

I'de like some more blue and/or white. Red would also be cool but we have a ton of red (well, most of us anyway ). TBH (not trying to derail the thread here) I think the colour vomit issue is more distracting to me, as well as many parts coming in only one colour, such as the 5x7 and 5x11 frames only coming in grey and so on. I think that some vehicles will only ever come in yellow because it helps make the vehicles instantly and more easily recognisable to children as being heavy construction equipment.

It's possible for TLG to make it happen. The parts i've come up with, along with a few others are parts that we've been waiting for for a long time and they would open a door to fantastic new sets with awesome, rock solid and authentic functionality without raising part counts to unecessarily high levels. Remember 8880 had around 1300 parts which is half that of this years crane, 8868 I think was under 1000 parts. Whilst I think around 2000 is a great number for flagships, 8880 and 8868 were still able to give us more new possibilities and innovations than 42009 at around 2600 parts. So with well designed new parts and more man hours given to the design process of both parts and sets to ensure their full potential (8480 took 3 designers and 80 working prototypes!), it all depends on if they decide to do it or not.

I posted this in another topic, is something like this to your liking? 8880 is a great example. Imagine a new supercar, in white or dark metallic grey, without the cluttered patchwork of panels (and NO COLOUR VOMIT!)but clearly defined, smooth lines making up a more bear bones but detailed, very low down and sleek/fast looking bodywork (with side vents, wing mirrors, etc), new 6 speed gearbox with lots of different sized synchros and a gearlinkage that manages to change 6 gears as nice and smooth and easy as 8880, new low profile, glossy black wheels and tyres (that actually look like real world supercar wheels and tyres) same diameter as the unimog but wider and very deep hubs (like 8448) so that the steering pivot can be mounted right inside the wheel, disk brakes visable through the spokes of the wheels, highly detailed engine with a really long, curvy chain on the front to look like the long cam belts on real engines and so on and so on, new diffs (see below) plus all the usual like suspention/steering. Bringing this post back on topic, if they came out with such a supercar, a true and worthy modern day 8880 (ie a huge leap forward in functionality, new parts and styling) then I really would not care what the piece count is, 1000, 3000, don't care just take my money!

Red parts

Yeah, people did complain that there was too much red and yellow even as recent as last year I think.
