Defining Size
allanp replied to Paul B Technic's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Probably parts. Moderns sets would have around 500 - 1000 or even 1200 parts for a medium sized set. -
Help With Crane Steering
allanp replied to Saberwing40k's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Sounds awesome. What wheels are you using? Do you know what will be the distance between wheels/axles? Which axles will be driven? -
To avoid any jamming you might want to have small wheels on the opposite side of the gear rack for the door to run on. Better still have another gear rack, so you have one on each side. Have you thought about other alternatives like a pneumatic cylinder? With that you would get a lovely pffft sound, no need for clutch gears and speed could be controlled (from slow to snap shut) by opening the valve only so far.

For sure, it looks fantastic. The designers did a great job and the colours are fantastic. Now just needs some cool functionality to make it a sure purchase! I'm hoping for (to go with the standard PF stuff) some real plane like functionality, something along the lines of a single control stick that moves pitch flaps when you move it forward/back and seperate roll flaps when you move it left/right via some cool linkage. Could even include the rudder into the same control stick so that the rudder moves when you twist the control stick. Although I doubt it, it would be awesome to have the pilot and co-pilots controls move with them as well! Will it be something like that or just the PF stuff? Either way it looks great

I think it was wise to make a grader as a b-model. Many people have asked for one but I personally don't think a grader would work well as an a-model because as a vehicle it is not so well known or easy for kids to tell what it is as something like a cement lorry or fork lift truck. Perhaps it would have been better if it was the b-model to an all yellow set. BTW, should be ok to directly post these pictures on this forum as they have no markings to say they are confidential.

The Ultimate Wheel
allanp replied to Junpei's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
The power miners ring gear has 48 teeth, equal to the total amount of the 3 16t gears. The method of reduction described above will give you a 3:1 ratio. To get a 4:1 ratio you need to have the ring gear stationary and attach the wheel to the rotating 5L beam. EDIT Zblj beat me to it! -
I agree that Lego showed us a bad way with 42008. As much as I love pneumatics they were poorly implemented in 42008 IMHO. Should have used the larger ones for smoother operation, and of course ditched the LAs! But yeah, I'm trying my best not to get sucked into "that" debate here so as to not go too far off topic.

Motorised Linkage Help?
allanp replied to Blast's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
The question is a little vague so it's hard for people to know what to say. Build something and if it has problems post a picture of it. -
To be fair, there might be some desire among FFOLs for a technic car, like a mid sized cabriolet coupe in mostly white with some teal and purple flourishes and some discrete stickers and softer, more rounded edges (think the opposite of the very manly looking boss crawler), and maybe a nicely detailed, brick built interior with a fake stereo and so on. Of course it would also have an engine and suspension and all that good stuff. Like this but WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY more subtle and grown up to the point where us guy might also like it and not immediately realise it's a womans car, like an Audi TT!

LEGO Minecraft (Minfigure Scale) 2014 Rumors and Discussion
allanp replied to just2good's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Hmmm, they are good but I wanted to have a go at designing one myself as it seems a lot of people (including me) wanted movable legs. What do you guys think? -
Technic General Discussion

I guess you mean only flagship F1 cars right? The midscale one from 1995 had a hot rod as a b-model.
