I'd echo that, I like the frontier spirit of the CFS, and it's one of two that I really liked the look of prior to the reveal, and the reveal has only heightened my appetite!

@Jim: Yeah it's just earlier this year I bought a new car, got our bathroom done and our garden landscaped. But this is the last month of austerity, and starting in January 2019 I'll have disposable income again. I don't have an EV3 brick or a Raspberry Pi, although I have considered buying the latter. I'm not much of a gears and Technic guy so the EV3 doesn't immediately appeal, especially given its price, but maybe one day.

Good luck @Jim! As I say I've only used Event Hubs in Azure bit happy to help if I can. I know it's a bit frustrating starting with MQTT but I guarantee this will be better in the long run than using web sockets. It's how all modem IOT applications are architecture, because you don't need a constant connection so it can deal with drops outs easier. If I had the hardware I'd give it a bash myself (not that I'm suggesting I'd do it any faster than you, but two of us working together would surely be faster) but I am totally skint this month to buy anything.

Thanks!

Really nice work on the shrine, I like the black statue and the brown frame, goes well together. I like what you've tried to do with the grey rockwork but as @Kai NRG said, it's a bit rough looking for my tastes. The seagulls and minifigs are perfectly posed, I like the way the seagulls in particular are crowded round exactly where you'd expect them to be. The little lean-to is well done too. Nice work!

Thanks @MKJoshA and @goatman461 for patiently answering all the questions. At the risk of sounding rude, when do you think the faction reveals might be? There's a few competitions on at the moment, e.g. Colossal Castle Contest and Space Jam, and I'm just trying to work out what to build when.

That's a nice mechanic, and it'll be interesting to see how that works in practice! @Kwatchi: I couldn't possibly say!

Gnome's Door - The Lion's Eye Chapter 5 - Freebuild
Basiliscus replied to mccoyed's topic in Guilds of Historica
No problem! I hardly consider myself a colour guru (yesterday we put up our Christmas tree and my wife said that I could only recognise colours from the LEGO colour palette after I referred to a decoration as "dark tan") but happy to offer unsolicited advice as required. So yes, the Romans did build elevated roads to help with drainage, but they were a historical anomaly and in any case I always imagine that the green plate is supposed to represent grass stems and they are almost always higher than the path itself. Here's a few examples of what I mean: To shamelessly plug one of my Brick to the Past cronies, here's a good example of a footpath at a larger scale: Hope that helps! -
Glad to see a bit more action in this thread. If there are 6 factions it'll need as many players as possible to prevent some from going stagnant (like what happened to Nocturnus in GoH, and that was with 4 factions).

Gnome's Door - The Lion's Eye Chapter 5 - Freebuild
Basiliscus replied to mccoyed's topic in Guilds of Historica
For me the incoherence is caused by the path and foliage having too many shapes and colours. The path has light bley, dark bley, reddish brown and olive green, on a base of green. I'd have stuck to two colours and used them more extensively. Additionally (and this is one of my pet peeves), the path is higher then the landscape, which looks really unnatural. Whilst it's realistic to have many different colours of flowers mixed together, sometimes (like the path) too many colours make it hard for the viewer to see what's going on. Again, I'd have probably chosen one colour of flower and used that more extensively. At the end of the day it's still a nice MOC and I definitely get the "cut your losses and move on" approach (been there a million times myself), just some thoughts for next time. -
Hmm seems strange that the error is occuring intermittently! That's the worst type of error to debug. To me I'd be pointing the finger at the broker in that case. Where are you running the broker? In Azure? Despite recommending it I've never actually used MQTT - ironically given your skillset I've only used the less lightweight AMQP protocol via Event Hubs in Azure. I think RabbitMQ might be a shout if you are struggling with what you have now. I'm off work until Wednesday but I could spare some time then to check for you? I don't have an EV3 module or a Raspberry Pi though so I'd be working blind. Hope that helps!

Gnome's Door - The Lion's Eye Chapter 5 - Freebuild
Basiliscus replied to mccoyed's topic in Guilds of Historica
Nice build @mccoyed! Once again the writing is great and really gets the viewer involved in the MOC. The gnome door is nice, love the exhausts coming out of it, just how you'd imagine a steam door! As you have said yourself the flora is a bit untidy and has too much going on to be coherent. Hope to see more from you because Varlyrio needs you! -
So I totally agree with @Garmadon that this is your best work yet! So much to love: the partially broken dark bley pillars looks fantastic, the 1xN reddish brown plates in the wall make it interesting, the minifig posing is top notch and finally the throne has one great parts usage, in particular the ornate 1x1 bricks at the top with the horns. Great work!

Sounds interesting, count me in! I'm thinking: Varlyrio: Knife's At Work -
Thanks! Nice one, thanks for elaborating. In that case, all my questions are answered! Look forward to seeing the faction reveals.

Nice work David! Another great MOC from you, you're getting quite prolific without compromising on quality, impressive! The dark bley is really nice, it contrasts well with the tan and medium dark flesh. Love the partially melted snow on the ground (can't believe you chose Mitgardia as an Aussie! ) but I think the bits of the roof look a little tacked on, there could be more here to make it more believable. The 1x1 round bricks and 1x1 square plates work really well together as the pillars for the overhang. The 1x1 round plates in the roof ends look great and give a nice texture. My only real criticism is the presentation lacks some polish - a few of the reddish brown tiles are misaligned, as is the 1x1 round brick stem at the apex of the roof. Maybe bits got knocked when you were switching styles?

Fair enough! Thank you for the clarifications @goatman461 and patiently answering my questions. I'll wait for @LucasLaughing or @MKJoshA to clarify the character specialisations and will eagerly await the faction reveals! Good work gentlemen!

This is a fantastic MOC! Major respect to you for the 100% LEGO scenes, the one where Hammel is walking away with Knell and Makny looking on shows the real depth of the scene. Great work! The story itself is incredible, really well written and the characters really came to life in just a few lines. As @W Navarre said you could have saved yourself some pain by not making the bits not shown so ornate, but that's more friendly advice than criticism. Lovely stuff!

Loving the new torso and sabertooth, a good advertisement for these parts and I'll need to check what set they're in and add them to my own collection! The minifig posing is great. The snow itself is a little flat and bland, it would have been nice to include some curved slopes or other variations in height to help make it look more natural. Also, in the final shot, some footprints (1x1 plates?) would have added some more scene depth. Nice little build though!

Really lovely parts usage, great use of headlight bricks in all their many permutations! The clips as crenellations is a nice idea too. Great work!

Book III - Varlyrio: Guild sign-up and Discussion
Basiliscus replied to Rogue Angel's topic in Guilds of Historica
It's going to take all of us contributing MOCs if we don't want to end up last after the next round! The other guilds have all built a lot of freebuilds. I'll definitely be posting something in the next couple of weeks! -
Thanks for the clarifications! So that brings me on to two further questions: How will building in any era work with influence points? If the map exists in the present post-Battle of Jakku timeline, how are influence points created from builds in the past? For the character speciality skills are there levels within each skill, or is it simply a binary have it/don't have it? (e.g. can I reach Explorer level 5 or is it just Explorer or not?) Looking forward to the faction reveals!
