7048 - Troll Warship Picture Review!
Athos replied to Doctor Sinister's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
Nice review. Those little boats are horribly and inexcusably empty. Poor show, Lego. I'm also not sure I like the new prison door, though it is nice to have a smaller one. I'd rather they made a dwarf-sized house door instead. Beyond that it looks like a good set. They're not going to get very far. Just going to go 'round in circles. X-D Steve -
I don't know if we need another forum. Though at the risk of being further mocked by Hinckley, I am going to say that I am finding the forum organization a bit messy. I'm against a bunch of new forums, because it seems harder to keep up when everything is fragmented. I don't really care about space or exoforce or star wars reviews, so that's just one more sifting I have to do. And one more forum I have to check. I like to be able to look at everything involving a particular theme in the same forum. How does it work at fbtb? They've got a whole review forum. Though I don't like their 'one thread for one set' policy. That might work well, if you are looking for reviews of a particular set, but I generally read reviews for fun only, and I don't want to sift through pages of nonsense, just to see if there is a new review. Besides, we do have a search function for anyone who is seriously looking for a review. I think an index might be the way to go. Though it would probably be terribly labor intensive. Steve

Some trees I came across at classic-castle: The thread at C-C. Steve

I bet its a Pirate theme. Though I have nothing to base that on, beyond the notion that a story-bible would fit with that theme. Steve

It is from Lost. Basically they find an old van in the jungle, with a dead guy and a bunch of Dharma brand beer. What Dharma is, is one of the little mysteries of the show.

I'm sick of all the new slopes too. Seems like they are starting to outnumber the standard bricks and plates. Steve

Hmmmm... I don't know G.F., so I'm not sure how credible he would be. The statement is vague enough to provide us with essentially no information at all, except that Lego is planning some sort of product for 2009. Steve

I think your vignettes are missing something. Its hard to say just what though. They seem a little flat, for lack of a better term. The boat one is vertically flat. Also that boat is really big for a vignette. I'd suggest making a smaller boat, like this one. Then you could fit more landscaping on the 8x8 plate, which would really improve it. Malice in the Palace is flat around the outsides. If you put some greebling (castle style, with weapons, shields, torches, etc) on the walls, I think it would help. Tiling the floors might help too. Some furniture on the lower level might help to. And some flags on the upper. The Princess one is kind of plain. Its flat in color. It also lacks detail. I'd use only one stack of bars and put some walls in on either side. It'd make it more sturdy. Also way too much black. The second one is better. This one isn't really all that flat. The landscaping is too blocky though. I'd also use more foilage pieces. Maybe a rock or road would help too. The first one has too much grey and the wall isn't very interesting and its also flat. If you put some rubble around the base it might help. Also vary the color of the wall. A window might help too? Steve

Pictorial Review - Tower Raid & Dwarf's Mine Defender
Athos replied to metalandi's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
This set didn't come with the new jail door piece? I'd have guessed it would have, since there is an orc in prison. Nice review. I'm looking forward to picking up these sets. Steve -
Here are some suggestions from a discussion we had at adventurers.dk. Steve

Wait a minute... Its not April Fools Day yet... Steve

Maybe it could be a blue VW van, with some Dharma Brand beer in the back too! Steve

I think if you just toss a bunch of foilage parts it, it will work. Lots of vines. A few pine trees look good, I think. Palm trees look good, but they are so open at the bottom, it looks funny. Upside down seaweed. Bamboo pieces. The tree parts. Stumps. Etc. Some uneven ground would help too. Plus if you use the flower stems, it looks like its very overgrown. Also some animals. Here is one of my jungle scenes. Steve

Maybe there just aren't that many good potential Lego sets from the movie? Steve -

Personally, I'm not a fan of open-ended vignettes, as part of the point is to tell a story in a tiny space. As to the constuction, I'm not a fan of the BURP usage. The plants are nice. The whole scene, however, needs something more... I'm not sure exactly what, because its an open-ended vignette so we don't know what you're trying to get at. Steve

It may be a bit Amero-Centric and possibly controversial, but a Huckleberry Finn line would be interesting. I just had this idea recently and haven't had time flesh-out just what sets could be had. A little raft would be good and maybe a paddleboat. Steve

Yay for reviews! Actually all I read was the comic, which are my favorite part of any review. Steve

Here you go. And here is the thread where its all discussed. Steve

This used to me happen all the time, as my mother frequented thrift stores and would bring home any Lego she encountered. They usually had MBs mixed in. Now, I kept my Lego in a little workshop/shed. So when I'd find a MB, I'd just toss it right out the door. There are probably dozens of MBs burried in the dirt now. Steve

I like the tile accenting on the walls. I'm not sure I like the dungeon door on the bottom floor though. Interesting take on the upper door. It looks really good. Steve
