[WIP] Flying Brick
aol000xw replied to whale2's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
If the space shuttle did it, there is a good chance for this. @mmbc: All this non purist thing is TLC fault. They fail year after year at meeting AFOL expectations on several fronts, hence people feel more inclined to look for solutions out of Lego inventory in order of meeting their goals. And I think it is good, Thinking outside the box is always good. -
Technic in Design Limbo?
aol000xw replied to allanp's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
IMHO there is a reason for the new hubs: Kids and size/weight. The axle by itself totally lacks the structural integrity necessary for big vehicles like Unimog. The model weight causes too much friction/tension and kids easily bend the axles or break the rims at the axle cross. Portal hubs and 42000 hubs provide a strong 3 point support at the rim side and benefit from several mounting holes for the chassis. Not matter how well designed custom hubs are or reinforced the axles.with half bushes are, in the end there is always a point where there is only the axle supporting weight, That is weak. Edit: I know that some designs using turntables don't have that problem, but that is not the point, those are not always suitable for models and are quite bulky. -
The tire/motor/budget count argument has no merit. Nico awesome machines or that spirograph come to mind. Is not about budget, it is about skills and imagination. On the other hand not everyone is the same and not everyone is a winner. There are not medals for everyone and in any competition there is only a winner. If anyone is interested in beign one, that takes skills and an effort, no free gold medals. I see too many complains/objections in this and it didn't even start yet. Let Jim start working on it and then don't go for the throat, I am pretty sure he can fine tune it as required once it is working. To be honest I don't think I will ever be frontpaged -or win a contest- but that it is not what my bricks are for anyways.

Technic in Design Limbo?

If you run 9398 all day lon like a GBC can do, you will get the same results. Is not the appliance per se but the amount of time running. -
I don't see how the clutch works with the diff. When cornering to the side where the clutch gear is, that wheel needs to turn slower, but that wheel can never turn slower unless the vehicle is very very heavy. It works like a locked diff until the diference of forces on each wheel -like when one wheel loses grip- is high enougth to make the clutch slip, then the Diff works as usual, so the vehicle gets stuck. What am I missing?

No, the problem is that you can easily not get what you paid for. -
Technic in Design Limbo?

I'd like a line of Technic vehicles/attachments/accesories all of them made in the same scale. That way they could design truck cabins, different kinds of trailers, freight containers, machinery etc. Giving children a framework of related sets with great playability -Playmobil scale would be a great decission- could give them a reason to want those sets not only for parts or building but for interacting. After all I reckon that for children building is as much part of the fun as actually playing with whatever they build. Unimog does not combine very well with welll anything else, however having a truck on the right scale to carry 42006, and a dump truck suited to its scale too... etc. Just look at whatever Playmobil has donde and make it Technic, A bit like Lego City in Technic, just bigger scale... Right now anything Lego does in Technic looks unrelated and disconected, so the only reason to want a set is for parts or for the individual value of that set, there isn't a bigger picture, a collection/line sense. Technic is the only Lego that suffers that lack of interest when thinking on the sets as a whole. -

Most of the chinese production is subpar in quality terms but not all of it, so "Made in china" is not neccessarily a bad thing. However I reckon that chinese bussiness culture makes it hard to achieve HQ and requires an extra effort in QC/surveillance of Lego partners by TLC. As long as quality remains the same, which is possible, I see no reason to worry. -

Glad I found the '2014 bitching' thread! Over the years technic got some new tyres every now and then and a new part here and there, but major changes or sets consolidating new/existing paradigms, and currently still relevant if I got it right and leaving mindstorms aside, are these: 1980: 8860 1984: Pneumatics 1994: 8880 1999: Studless 2007: Power functions 2008: Linear actuator (for better or for worse IS a major change, tighly related to PF) Improved pneumatic RF vs IR or imporved steering/suspession add costs without really adding function. The current number of Lego sets based on Franchises is staggering. After all most children nowadays are more interested in Bits that ABS parts, so makes sense the stronger the resemblance of a set to something that children want the better. Ferrari makes sales, Ackerman not so much. I think Lego Dark Ages are there for a reason. When children get to a point where enigneering and realism are relevant to them, biology and hormones get in the way... For most sex becomes more interesting than bricks, until one night bricks and not sex are what keep you awake and you are an AFOL and probably way older, consuming a product not really aimed at you. So unless TLG considers the relatively small AFOL Technic market big enougth for some innnovation targeted squarely at it I don't see a true 8880 successor happening in the near future. Omg there is no hope!! -

It looks indeed pretty light, I bet it is possible but with non Lego rotor blades. -
