same here... the less competition amongst us the better lol. i probably stepped on someones toes this last week when bidding.... though right now i'm too much in the hole from lego!!!! i am in florida right now, and just spend 84 bucks at the pick a brick wall! i wanted to get twicethat, but i just could not justify it. Alot of good basic pieces this time around, so sad i could not get more.... -
Arr, if only ye could be reincarnated whilst still alive! i love it, very comical. I especially like the pirate with two hooks being sniped. so clueless! :) The model is pretty outstanding. I can't think of much you could improve, it looks like the walls fold away nicely so you can move the figs around, thats some times hard to do with full walls. kudos. I like how you built your raises instead of using rased baseplates. the color scheme is right on the money too. Though it does look odd to have a mortar structure then a wooden structure, but makes sense that it is an add on... Its pretty cool overall. Glad to see the islanders doing something!

Yeah so? The Golden Age of Piracy was from 1715 to 1730 but there was a hell of a lot of piracy before then... Read this then sunshine! But you are right, it was used in European vessels after the end of 18th century, but Mr Cleese never said anything about the vessels being European. Sorry, I am a western scholar. Though thats pretty cool. ill have to read more about that. I am going to disagree with wickapedia (since it is usually written by non-profesionals) I am not going to dig, but Angus Konstam in most of his books sites the golden age at 1700-1730. (pirates : terror on the high seas comes to mind as a good quick overview read on the subject.) since he is a pretty well accepted pirate historian, and i have seen others give this as the time of the golden age, for the fifty or so years before 1700 that woudl be the age of the buccaneers. I think Lego armada happens more in that period, as spain was farther out of the picture durringthe golden age, on the other hand i think the imperial guard are from the age of piracy, considering britain and france took it upon themselves durring this age to destroy piracy.... but that is my own take on it. -

lol, its ok. The iron plating deal wasn't done because iron was so expensive to manufacture, plus it weighs down the ship. Now this could have been done in special cases, but as i have said i have not ran across one yet... and all i have beendoing this summer has been reading naval history for my masters thesis. Though you are definitely right around 1800 when iron came more readily and cheeper, some ships would be refit or built with some iron on their sides (I am pretty sure ol' ironsides (the USS constitution) wasn't one of those :P anyay... towards the american civil war more and more metal based ships were being produced, some with just old railway track (like the CSS Virginia was) and some with thin sheets of steel on the sides... in effect in began to bolster the arms industry as they tried to build more powerful guns to conquer these impenatratable beasts.... -
i agree with the teal, i dont know what sets were using it, but there was tons at the orlando florida imagination center pick a brick wall, my fiance wanted me to make the disney character Stich with them, of course i took them and made buildigns of them! lol The new brownish orange is weird, but adds a new variety for wood color i suppose i dont know... just the pieces i had. i don't know if i had an inspiration per say.... it just popped out of my head.
-
Was there any particular reason you was determined not to use any ship pieces? Like you were setting a challenge for yourself, or didn't you have sufficient ship pieces to build an entire ship? challenge for myself... i have hulls, and i could just use the 4+ masts (the real masts i ordered 3 weeks ago on bl still havent come!) My next ship is goingto use those pieces from the destroyed peacock to make a pretty red ship... i know how much some people here hate red tho! lol i dont know if it will be the "wolfhound's" ship... but we will find out when i build it! I do want to make a merchant ship, so it might just be that instead. The castle guys are the pirate hunter in this story... though i didnt change the one's hat, because i was looking for another tricorner , i always liked that weird castle hat though, just don't have much use for it. I like wolf pack bodies, and i thought it would be cool if the pirate used his family crest, the wolf as his emblem. So that is why i used castle guys.

Interest in a Universal Pirates Story Setting?

he said 16th century, which predates the golden age of piracy, but is the era of exploration (1492 - 1690s) .... (if you think about it this is probably where the later pirate theme takes place, when the earlier theme takes place around 1675 - 1725) there were no iron clads... and I have never read any acounts of iron plating until the end of the 18th century. -

Hi, just wanted to make a topic where people could point out potential lots on ebay for others. (i know not everyone wants to help each other out here, since we drive the prices up against each other, but there is stuff that i am just not going to bid on, and i rather it turn into MOCs that i can see here! HAHA. Or atleast help some of you folks' collections) So the first one i found, and i havent looked for small hulls lately, but here is a the black and grey hull for 10 bucks Buy it now, if anyone is interested. if there is already a post like this let me know i will go revive it instead of start this one. -
well it is either going to be some sort of guard facility at plunder bay, which i am thinking of themeing in "island" colors and browns to make it look like its at the edge of a jungle, or it is going to end up as a feature in Port Danielle, obviously in some remote corner that needs the extra cannon to help defence... right now i am leaning towards the pirate villiage, but i had not planned to build that until i had done port danielle, which isn't coming along very well.
-
Hi all, I have been working on a port in my spare time, and i keep ripping it apart. But i came up with one building that i liked. I am not sure if it will be in my eventual goal of a pirate town called "Plunder Bay" or if it will go into the out regions of my port city i am trying to build called "Port Danielle" Anyway, again this is a MOC made from Pick a Brick wall extras. It has "island colors" or seems to to me, thats why i am leaning more towards a pirate building. I tried to make it as much like a lego set as possible. I left the back open, and tried to create some sort of pattern i thought lego might use. i also had too many of those aweful KK2 base pieces to use. It is hard to use those corners... Oh well, take a look here is the gallery when it goes public And here is a pic until then:
-
yeah that is true, most decks had no more then five foot of clearence. except perhaps some holds, but gun decks and quarters all were pretty tight.
-
just bricks.... slopes for the bow, but a box like stern. Like i had sait, there were some "square" looking vessels, i dont think any were ment for the high seas, when i finished the model it reminded me of a river boat... proably why it could not out run the SES! haha also, at first i was determined not to use any ship pieces at all, but masts made out of only bricks fell apart too much.

Fleet Listing? Army Listing? Discussion thread
SkaForHire replied to SkaForHire's topic in LEGO Pirates
I think it is fine for now... until it falls off the main page. which it will inevitably do after most of the current users post... from that point if it is pinned then new users can contribute... or for now you could put it in the directory so if new users read that they could go to it? i don't know, up to you. A bump so that perhaps the newcomers will go up and usedthe pinned "fleet listing" page. -
10c I am not going to divide this post, because i have little to say about this MOC. The Peacock was just something i whipped together real quick while i was supposed to be reading articles for my thesis lol. I have a bunch of red bricks from my last visit to walt disney world lego store, so i ended up making a ship with them, however i didn't have hulls out at the time, so i decided to see if i could make a hull out of slopes... it failed pretty bad. Though I know there were flat bed ships like this little merchant ship that were almost square... I decided that the thing had to die... but instead of just disassembling it, i decided that i could find a better way, Letting the notorious Redbeard have his way with it.... so here is a little tribute to the patriach of lego piracy: First of all, here is the gallery. I am not going to go through ever picture listed here, just the action shots. __________ The Taking of the Peacock James Silverthorn had been a merchant for seven years. He had taken many journeys through the Legowind Straits, and almost had grown accustomed to paying small "protection" fees to upstart pirate gangs in the region. It was on his eighteenth voyage into the straits that he had just paid one of these fees when something happened to change his mind about the merchant life forever. His ship the Peacock had just left Port Danielle two days prior to paying the fee to the Wo Ton Pirate Clan. He had been pulled over by a small skiff with a pirate representative aboard. The representative boarded his ship, inspected the cargo, and asked for a small protection sum in his best broken english. Silverthorn was used to this procedure, he had paid tribute to the Wo Ton Clan before, and like any small time pirate group in the straits, they were supposedly affiliated with Redbeard himself. Silverthorn paid the sum, and was given a "mark" on a scrap of paper, the last words of the pirate was "You show that if boarded" Thinking nothing of it, silverthorn pocketed the paper and set sail for the spanish city of El Legosia, where he was to unload his cargo of textiles. Not two hours later a large vessle appeared on the horizon, within minutes members of Silverthorn's crew had identified the profile as that of the Bloody Mary. They became terrified because this ship belonged to none other then Redbeard himself. Silverthorn kept his cool and when the customary cannonshot was shot over the Peacock's deck, he had the sails taken down and let the Peacock come to a stop for boarding. Image Image 2 the gang plank is lowered and the Peacock prepares to be boarded Image 3 Two pirates (in blue, and in white) come aboard to inspect the vessle, they tell all the crew to keep their arms where they can see them. Image 4 sharpshooters prepare in the masts. Image 5 James hands the papers over and the pirate in white throw them over board. The pirate called over to Redbeard and said "Wo Ton is handing passage rights again!" Redbeard and the other pirates on the Bloody Mary laugh hystericly at this. James does not find this funny, he had never had a problem like this before. Redbeard calls back, "Take the loot, burn the ship, press the crew. I want to get on to that fort and look at what we may be up against." no one is sure what happened next, their was an eerie silence, and some say that one of the crew on the deck mouthed off to the pirate in blue. Image 6 whatever happened, the crewmember ended up dead and floating in the water. Image 7 the other crew began to fight back, fearing for their lives the guns are turned on the Bloody Mary. Image 8 silverthorn mans the other cannon and prepares to fire, his first mate Elton knocks the white pirate out with a plank. On the main deck the crew has recaptured the initive... all looks good except for one thing. Bloody Mary is ready to broadside! Image 9 seeing a potential broadside comeingon, silverthorn takes the helm and trys to stear the ship out, however it is too late. the first broadside completely knocks out the mast and part of the bow, killing the majority of the ships crew. image 10 The second broadside leaves just Silverthorn standing, the Peacock has lost all of its ability to fight back and was heavily damaged. Image 11 the third broadside completely anhilates the small vessel. Silverthorn jumps off before it's pieces sinks. He finds a cargo crate and hides in it until the pirates pull away. Along the way he happens to come across elton, who miraculasly is still alive. Image 12 image 13 On that day a new man was born from James Silverthorn. He became known as The Wolfhound. Pirate hunter extrodinare. Image 14 Elton sighned on and began to wear Silverthorn's family crest the silver wolf. Beware Redbeard, you have a new enemy... one that is not restrained by the laws of the sea, jurisdictions, or alliances. A man that has vowed to stop at nothing to take you down for the loss of his ship and crew.

This is a rather small-sized MOC I've recently built. It's sort of a small ship the Spanish admiral uses for official and diplomatic purposes, that's why I think the above definition fits here. I imagine it isn't used for long distance travels and never sails alone, but under protection from other, more powerful vessels. The crew consists just of the admiral and a few officers. The ship has one small cannon, which is used for salute rather than for combat. Being a small ship, this MOC doesn't have many special features - but it does have a bed where the admiral can rest, and a desk where he can sit and write letters and orders for his fleet. :-) I'm especially happy about the design of the stern section. Brickshelf gallery I like it! First of all i have to agree with some of the sentiments already listed. Not every ship needs cannon, or lots of cannon, you said it had one, i think that is enough. The rigging is fine, i am pretty sure there are vessels rigged similar to this, i remember seeing one in port once. they are usually smaller... like this ship. And in fact i was just over visiting my "real" collection at my moms house, and found a MOC that i did 5 years ago, i used the same type of rigging! lol only i think i had a long rigging piece instead of two seperate pieces... and even more scary, on another MOC i had that rope from the ninja sets draped over the stern like you do in this one! I really liked that by the way... anyway i also like that you use redbeard torsos to make more soldiers.... i wish i hat the hats to do so too! but anyway, this is a nice little vessle, and I like it. almost forgot about the owl... good use of that for the figure head!

This intrigues me, can you scan this map and this picture of the Ironram? I would like to try and build it or see someone else do so.... if i see any stories I will let you know... just read my SES box, it says: "The Pirates, led by Captain Redbeard, are a powerful force of renegades. No Imperial treasure is safe when these seafaring mates are around. Their sailing ships are as fast as anything in the Imperial Fleet. Their island outposts are fortified and well hidden. whether on sea or land they are a strong adversary for Govenor Broadside. The Pirate adventure really begins with you, the LEGO maniac. Using your imagination and the building sets from the LEGO SYSTEM Pirate collection you can create your own exciting high seas adventures. Who will control the enormous royal treasure , thepirats or the imperial guards? Onlyy you can decide because... you're in control of the action... your in charge of the fun... youre the lego maniac! then it is in french so i mgiht have a canadian box, i am not sure. i bought it on EBAY a long time ago -
LMAO that last one is great.... " look ma, a bird! I think i will shoot it!" i wonder if that happens in HK alot... must be harsh life for birds there...
-
If you are in the same country as people selling, then its cheep... but since it seems almost everyone with a good amount of cannons / hulls that are on bricklink are from europe.... so shipping to the states is evily steep. I really need some more cannons though.
-
i thinksomeone crazy enough to buy at 269 american will snatch it up on the last day of the auction. $269 is in the very high range, but probably acceptable for people considering if they would have bought these all seperate it would probably run them 300 bucks (3 armada flagships at 70 a piece and RBR for 90 on auction, and then the large amount of white bricks another 25 bucks or so atleast...) so i would not look down on someone for buying this fleet (this means if you buy the fleet and you are reading this thread, you should fess up to us and let us know how these models are! :P )
-
THis is very sweet indeed.... The more vikings the better! Can't wait, would be nice to see the red faction turn into their own sets or something? (or am i wrong, and are they already in sets? i only have one set actually built, the rest are MIB and stored until i have more room) would be cool to have two minifig factions for the theme.
-
aye aye i totally agree. would like to see a safer way to buy. any knock off in fact.. lol other then megablocks... their crap has gotten to the point where it is not even compatible anymore. though i do like their rockish 2x4 pieces, makes good earth works.... oh well. The things we will do to supplement our pirates....
