Arr , master and commander, almost forgot it, thanks to remind me! It also inspired me On the subject of Pirate movies I must bring up Disney's Treasure Island! That was the first Pirate movie I ever saw and the one I liked the most as I haven't really thought much on the other film versions of Treasure Island. They just didn't seem as good to me. Maybe that's because Disney's version was aimed more towards children. I've got the sequel as well but haven't got round to watching it. now that i think about it... my father reading me tresure island is what first prompted me to ever start building pirate ships with my legos, before i even had pirate legos! TI is definitely the pinicle inspiration of my pirateness

SkaForHire replied to SirScottLego's topic in LEGO Pirates
shhhh history is always fun... or else i am getting all this education for nothing !!!! I would be up for anything that brings ships back to the shelves... did you see the original viking prototype had new color wide hull!!!! I also played PotSM... i bought a whole box of the original set... then my brothers and i stopped really collectiong around the revolution sets (i wish we would have kept getting them... but alot o money for a game we dont play very often ... or in the last year lol...) the new faction sounds fun... ill have to check it out. -
Has POTC crossed the line? Should Lego follow?
SkaForHire replied to SirScottLego's topic in LEGO Pirates
i totally agree with ghoulrealm here, I also like the three faction idea but i would prefer if one of the faction was of the more paranormal nature. Be it damned, undead, or whatever sailors, that way for those who are seaking a more realistic line can just buy two of the factions another thing i was thinking about is if lego just continued with the pirate theme and used pirates, imperials, and introduced another paranormal faction there. one thing i always wondered was why lego never released an imperial ship using the wide hull? or am i wrong on this one. Carribean clipper was wide hull... sorry about the god awful spelling... -
or perhaps atleast broke it into two... story and background on ship modification... i'll keep that in mind next time. unless people are sick of the stories then i can post MOC's without the "fluff." whatever the public wants.

IT would cost me too much to build... but i think done right it could be pretty awesome... i think the next ship i build is going to be back to traditional hull, just because i miss it. but that won't be until i get more pieces... andthat costs money... and now that some woman is trying to rip me off on ebay, thats 70 dollars of pirate legos im not getting... (i payed thru paypal already, it went through and she wont send my legos! WTF??? she says its because i am an unconfirmed shipping address, i have always used that address and never had a problem... and she wont refund my money... )

First of all, congradulations on making the first pirate related factory item I have seen... and posting it for the rest of us! thats awesome. second, bravo on the ship! i think its looking really good! Is there a praticular ship you were modeling it after? whereas the gunports are bigger then normal lego gunports, i think they still work, as i always felt lego ones were a tad bit too small. i love the cannons, how are they next to a fig though? And wouldn't they be larger calliber then 18 pounders if you were doing minifig scale? just wondering. but anyway i cant wait to see it with the rigging and sails, what you have started is looking pretty good.

Regarding Viking Prototypes (Longboat)
SkaForHire replied to Starwars4J's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
i personally much rather have that prototype... mainly because of the hull... Its system pirates hull! and a wide, in a new color (red and yellw) though the serpent head is much cooler, the body is a bunch of elephant bodies... and not those cool joints that can be used to make exoforce mobile suits... which is where my serpant is right now lol.... if i only had enough green... -
Has POTC crossed the line? Should Lego follow?
SkaForHire replied to SirScottLego's topic in LEGO Pirates
yeah i know it wasn't realistic, just trying to think of a good "lego" feeling theme. But the rumor of treasure works pretty well too, it gets the adventurers out there without having to ask, "um so what does the king model look like?" lol but anyway... another reason i neglected nationalities at the begining was that they tend to localize lego. (which i would love to see a theme like that where all of different nations are involved... but that would be a much larger release then Lego normaly produces, unless you started with a couple countries and released a new one or two each year.) i actually have to go so cant finish this now... -
Has POTC crossed the line? Should Lego follow?
SkaForHire replied to SirScottLego's topic in LEGO Pirates
Well, I think there's nothing wrong with the fantasy in POTC, and I would love to see a lego kraken! However there is a dark side on it, for example, the kraken could be am ugly 2-part creature or something, the ships, probarly with a 4+ hull and way too short armed with technic cannons. About your question: The viking Dragons are also fantasy, and it didn't came out that bad. But I don't love the approach of cursed ships and fictional sea monsters... un-cursed ships do the job as well :-) The first Pirate theme I like THAT approach I have been thinking how exactly could lego bring back the theme... it is true vikings pretty much fight sea monsters, which is a shame because kids will get board and may not realize that vikings are also good for raiding their castle(if you want to call KK2 that) stuff... but poor vikings don't have thier own real, inteligent enemy. they are going to faill. no conflict = no play, kids need to be told what to start imagining about, they can take it from there but if you limit them... then they are going to get bored. i love those vikings tho... So with that said... a new pirates theme should not be just about krakens and other giant meanies.... perhpas undead pirates are fine... they are atleast a faction to fight... but i would like to see something more classic (but perhhaps a little fantasy set in...) What I came up with was this for a new nautical pirate theme: Generic Title: the great treasure hunt... (yeah i know pirates didn't really bury treasure, but its a common myth that kids know) There are three "factions" they are all sent out by the king to go find this mysterious treasure somewhere in the west indies. I think this could provide lego with a way to use its recent marketing promo abilities to generate a story for kids to see and play with.... ie like exoforce... the problem with vikings was they had no dynamic personality, the marketing was bad for kids.... whereas i think they really released those sets for AFOLs and older kids that have more self starting imaginations... The largest ship in the line would belong to the "flamboyant" merchant who is over confident in his ability to bring home the treasure... his faction would have the "prettyest, bigest, and most grande ship" there faction could also include small sets that are small parties to go onto the islands to look for the treasure... The second largest ship, and the "bad guy" faction would be a rough pirateesque (if not a full blown pirate, or a previous pirate) man and his crew. their ship would be slightly smaller, or medium sized. Their faction would include small sets that were "raiding" parties and tresure hunters. The personality of these characters would be that of perhaps sam sinister from adventureres... theses guys just want to get out there and get the tresure. They don't care if they have to battle the other people for it or even steal it! They could even have control of the waters around the island with the tresure, and not be sent on the hunt at all... this owuld make them more pirate then anything. the third faction would be the more "heroic" model. His ship, the smallest yet perhaps medium size would be full of adventurers, which is also the motivation for their quest for the tresure. they want to see the world. They may often have to come to the rescue of the merchant, or they may even have to fight him if need be! but they are good guys in all sense of the word. their small sets would be explorer based Also there would have to be a large, medium and a couple small islands, where TLG would market that "you as the legomaniac will decide where the tresure is and who will find it first" This theme would make it different from old pirates but not drasticly... it also gives a sense of personal adventure for the player... It could easily have a follow up year... The third faction guy gets a new ship! a larger model... enter royal forces into the waters to protect from pirates... Pirate invasion! more pirates then ever are in the waters... IF TLG is reading, go ahead and steal the idea LOL.... i just want more pieces to create ships with LMAO... heck i would design the whole line for free if i got to keep the pieces hehehe This is the kind of theme i would like to see... i know its a little off topic... but i have been kicking it around for the last couple of days. -
I was thinking of going, but i am strapped for cash until student loans come in and have traveled way too much this summer... wish i was going though

I am goingto have to agree with you phes... i think there are a heck of alot of pirate fans out there that we dont know about.... they might just be more oriented to staying off line or not knowing about our community... i think this is proved most notably by EBAY i have done some research, or atleast spying on what people have won and recieved feedback for when they bid on pirates... the majority of the people i find are different bidders.... in the last three weeks there has been atleast 100 different bidders that have won pirate stuff in the past. thats 100 other people buying lego pirate... lets discount half as resellers, which i know is ridiculous but lets just say... then out of those 50 lets say 25 of them are the core posters from this board (which i know is not true... but still) and then lets take out half as say they are buying them for kids (which probably isnt true either.. but i am giving the lowest total.) that is 12 or 13 that don't know about these boards this month. and thats a very minimal guess... Plus, look at the prices, the law of supply and demand is telling us there is alot of demand for these items. I lost a parts ship two days ago at the last second (and i was doing last second bidding too) because it jumped 40 dollars( for an incomplete set and some spare pieces) in 30 seconds! i just think there is a much greater community out there then we know of.... now only if we couldfind those guysthat are buying whole collections and bring them here.

excellent as usual, but i was wondering if you could give us a shot of your custom cannons.... buying the real deal is out of my budget right now, and would love to see some alternatives. also, if i remember correctly, this was one of the last MOCs on Piratebricks right? do all your ships still exist? or are they getting taken apart to build when you start building again. BTW didnt you have a shot of 6 sterns or soemthing on your brickshelf page. that was a cool image! what happened to it? or am i thinking someone else?

before people were charging 15 dollars per piece on bricklink, it was more like 2.50 and i bought all this one shop had (2) found another captain redbeards ship on ebay for five (yes five!) dollars after shipping. and i bought my original captain redbeards ship. FIVE DOLLARS?!!??! I knew it's not the best LEGO set but five dollars?!?!!? I had to pay(or my parents, it was birthday gift) over 50 dollars!!! lol it was not MISB... but it was complete and polybagged. and if you thought i was a little nuts with so many of those hulls... i just pulled out my whole collection here to sort it and start on a small town MOC (It will be very very hard to do with what i have... but i am going to try. My ships need somewhere to dock.) I counted "normal" hulls i had... final tally: Wide: 4 sets (bow and stern) BSB style, 1 set RBR style, 1 set SES style, 14 red middles, 1 brown middle. (before someone asks... i am going to attempt to use electrical tape (either red or brown) on the outside to make them look right around the whole ship... i have seen this done on other MOCs... and looks OK) Skinny: 3 sets of Armada Flagship style, 3 sets of RR style, 4 white middles. and a buttload of brown inverted sloaps for building middles. my rigging is severely lacking... so much that i dont have any rigging! LOL actually, i am waiting for this bricklink shop to contact me back for payment.... i bought a ton of rigging and masts... thought i better do it so if i every want to build anything in the near future i could.... So anyway... if you were bidding on hull parts two years ago, i was that dick on ebay that kept winning... LOL. sorry. i am much broker for it now!!! Which is why I am posting this link.... please someone bid on it so i dont have to!

hehe... well i think it was imperial flagship that had "pirate looking" sailors on it. on alot of the navy's ships not everyone was part of the navy there were alot of hired hands that were merely there to staff the boat. it makes it easier to crew more imperial vessles if followed this... not needing as many imperials per ship helps... however you may be asking while there is a redbeard model on there lol... i just stuck him on there as "an old salty sea pilot" or i just put him there accidently, dont know. lol as for colors, i have the problem that i am away from my real collection (though this one at this house is getting larger and quickly...) so i was at loss of pieces to keep enough solid colors... ideally there would be no blue or maybe even yellow on the ship. those were just the pieces i had available.
-
Were there any pirate pieces at this Pick A Brick? unfortunately no, and not when i was there again last month... the make a minifig station had muskets but that was the only pieces that were ever in pirates that were abailable... though i made some cool looking dudes, 3 bucks a piece was too much for figs that didnt really fit into my collection.

hmm then it must not have been xenofex... i had anothe add on but can't remember the name... that must have been the one that does what i am thinking... but um more importantly i have a graphic designer fiance... ill just make her do it LOL shes a castle lover though... going to have to enslave her to make pirate pictures.
-
well when i used to have photoshop i used a plug in called xenofects i think... that made all kidns of cool things from backgrounds to lightning to the moon.... alot of neat little features... if i cant find something like that then ill just take some pictures or something..

Interest in a Universal Pirates Story Setting?
SkaForHire replied to Lord Admiral Helden Ravensdorn's topic in LEGO Pirates
i realized after i wrote all that junk... that it would be way to in depth.. though i kinda like the idea of classes going up every 5 guns.. we might even deal with the "ship" qualification for ratings that way those two masters that have more cannons can become rated... all depends i suppose.
