"Dead Men Tell No Tales" Vignette Contest - Discussion
SkaForHire replied to Norrington's topic in Pirate MOCs
well actually he would be 105 since he hasn't had his b-day yet... and i suppose if you celebrate by fives it is ok to make it a monumental birthday lol... I do think he needs to be mentioned in the contest though, since it was his ride and his heavy hand that provided the guidance to create the ride. The contest is to design something around the ride, so I think it would be fail to call it Walt Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean ride. Also technically if we want to celebrate something with this contest, than how about the 40th anniversary of the ride at Disneyland. It was debuted March 18th, 1967. We just missed that by a month. -
in some extents I would disagree, because it would be pretty neat if everyone had a link under a page called "affiliated fleets" or something that went to their own page or a template page which had their listings and then had links to photos (hosted wherever they are normally hosted) of peoples fleets... BUT... since that would require many people to come to conformity and make a page or supply information for a template... it would probably take a while to do or to get operable where more than a handful of us have things up.... So... I think you are right for the time being it should just be a stickied topic, but I really think in the future when things are running smoother there should be some sort of presentation of the pirates community....

The Pirates of the Caribbean Ride at Disneyland
SkaForHire replied to Norrington's topic in LEGO Pirates
Wow, i want to go to Paris' ride way more now lol I don't know how much flume ride element there is in the one at DL, I think it just has the normal one drop required to propel the ships, I have seen a diagram of it before and that was all i noticed.... but someone that has actually been on it would know better. I am disappointed they never put a restaurant into the Florida one, but I am guessing it would have had to look alot like the Mexico pavilion at epcot if they did. The two buildings (potc and mexico) share alot of characteristics like the false skies. The whole reason POTC is cut short in florida because they were not going to put it in there. They were going to do a totally different (and much longer) flume ride in Frontierland that involved many scenes from the "wild west" However, when WDW opened, people complained that the "pirate" ride was not there. So they utilized what small space they had in adventureland and put in POTC. meanwhile this led to the eventual cancellation of the Western ride, and the construction of Big Thunder Railroad and Splash Mountain. The flume ride for frontierland was pretty cool looking, and it is disapointing they did not put it in, though splash mountain and POTC are pretty awesome in themselves, and it would stink to have lost them... Big Thunder Railroad is okay too i guess. I just wish they would extend the Florida version of POTC under the railroad track and make the whole ride longer... but that will never happen. -
Ok things have changed since I visited a couple weeks ago... I was wondering what happened to the stickied fleet listing page. I think that was a fun page, and a community page. (yeah yeah, and I started it!) lol Perhaps it could get a link on the web page? just wondering, because it was the only page that allowed people to compare their fleets idealy in the future everyone could have a link to pictures of their fleets or something I guess.

The Pirates of the Caribbean Ride at Disneyland
SkaForHire replied to Norrington's topic in LEGO Pirates
Disney happens to be my other specialty besides naval history (LOL I am actually published in Disney History!) I love POTC, but I have never been able to get to Disneyland, which has the superior version. A note on refurbs... they are refurbishing both California and Florida soon to add a couple more characters to the ride. (ugh! Florida is short enough that they really can't change it....) Florida also has a different outside, its set in a spanish influenced plaza in Adventureland, rather than in New Orleans Square (which is replaced by Liberty Square in Florida) Although the Johnny Depp Audioanimatronic is one of the best Disney has ever produced, it somewhat taints the ride in my mind.... I don't mind where he is hiding by the mayor scene, and I don't mind him in the bucket replacing the lady, but in the final scene in Florida they changed the whole scene to be him in a treasure room... it kind of changes the whole ending. but oh well, it brings people to ride it more (though I seriously doubt it ever lacked riders, and whoever mentioned capacity is right on, its one of the only major rides in all the parks with out the fastpass system because wait times are never longer than 45 minutes) also, i think the refurb that changed the chasing pirates was pre-1997. And it was not Disney's official excuse to make the ride more politically correct, they actually to my knowledge never acknowledged the fact that they changed all of the chasers around so the women were chasing the men. A lot of writers, especially critics cite that this was a PC move, but I have yet to see any actually proof. It may be likely that Imagineers switched the models around to make people laugh. I hadn't read that the Paris version is longer than California, has anyone been on both to confirm this? And a note for all you who make it to the POTC in Florida, take the line on the left, it is much shorter! and usually people go to the right! :) I also want to state something about the competition... um Walt would be 105, not 100! :P -
for a governors mansion i just used the white long columns i think they look better then the lamp post... or are we talking actually for a lamppost on the model? i was thinking you meant for columns... i dont know... they could be usuful for something i bet...

I dont see why anyone would buy instructions to TLG sets... I can see them buying them for like puerto brico though i wouldn't personally, it is something original that was never released.... but for actual released sets all the instruction scans are available at multiple places online (or at least they have been) The only reason to buy physical isntructions is to make a complete set for selling or to have a copy for yourself if you need a physical copy... since i tend to mix my pieces it doesnt bother me to use online instructions (which are actually considered legal by TLG as long as TLG doesn't produce the set anymore)

I cant find it, but somewhere when we were discussing torso designs someone mentioned a printer that worked well with the adhesive paper... It was a laser jet, but i cant find the post... Does any one remember this? or does anyone know of a good printer that produces sharp, quality, shiny decals? I am in the market for a new printer and I have wanted to make a custom "green" army using the imperial templates... i just want to make good stickers before i buy a ton of figs. -
Wow, Frank I am glad you found us over here! Your page is probably one of the longest standing book marks I have had! I don't suppose you will be running an ESPG any time soon? :)

I did not see this one in the lego store! but that looks like an easy modify for a colonial village! (an English one) The original creator house would make a nice mansion as you said... if there was a way to detach the garage and make it a seperate stable that would be cool BTW while in florida i bought (and left there with my fiance, since airplanes don't seem to like big lego boxes) the Cafe Corner http://www.brickset.com/detail.aspx?Set=10182-1 Wow it is fantastic... when i set up my permanent town it will be included in the more built up section... (i am wrecking the one I am building now because i have to move in a couple months... wrecking via a wargame!) I have this Idea that Port Danielle will have walls and a colonial english looking town within the walls and "rift raft" outskirts aroudn the walls and on the docks... the current Port Danielle has a govenors mansion, a battery, a few small houses, a pilots house, and a fort... i swear i will post pictures soon... as i have two new ships completed (well one needs its rigging finished but its pretty much done) I want to see how you pull out the mansion though... i may look into buying one....
-
Because they are just instructions, and on small sets... if say it was the instructions to something much larger like that one replica of the Portuguese fort that we reviewed a couple months ago then one may pay upwards of forty dollars I would think... but on a small piece count set such as these are, and no pieces.... Besides most people can figure out how he made them anyway... its getting the right colors that is the hard part lol.

All my cabins are either empty or have a table and a map in them LOL....

SkaForHire replied to SirScottLego's topic in Pirate MOCs
tell him to come back! lol he had such good creations... and i really want to make a bloodheart now! too bad i dont have a good printer -
WOW. Just WOW... I love it. The windmill is great... I love the idea of a self sustaining estate that you have built! This is pretty neat... but where is his trading vessel? LOL don't you know you can not post here if you don't make ships? (I'm just teasing) But this is a great MOC, I can't wait until you put your whole layout together... there are not enough pirate town layouts on the web! Now I am ashamed to post my stuff that i have been working on for my layout! lol. your MOC is so good...

eh... depending on what you have lying around you could just make pith helmets for the Germans via the adventure pith helmet, if you want the spike (which the Germans removed during the war) you could always cut one of those mini-spears down a notch and put them in the pith helmets hole. for the Brits i am not sure... I can't even remember what they were wearing at the beginning of the war... perhaps there is some sort of SW helmet you could paint to look like them? I just don't like spending 1.50 on a helmet myself lol.

Like PhD dissertations on piracy lol.... if i can get into a program lol.

I have always liked sentry booths or guard booths... the military school i went to had one, they are just small little things that look like those bus stops kids have out in the country in the USA.... but they were used alot, in towns, along roads, at gate houses.... i think phes' design is pretty adequate, though most i have seen have three closed sides not just two. Their primary function is to keep the guard out of the elements while standing on duty. I have thought about incorporating a few of these into other projects... those horrible <insert that tiresome argument> spire pieces from castle seem to be just the right size to be a one piece sentry box if a roof is thrown on it....

my bathtub is too dirty for pictures ... or else i would go float a 5 mid section 4+ hull lol...
-
i would still buy the set for that custom row boat.... LOL
-
Yummy string! i say yummy, because i usually buy embroidery floss, which frays easily and i wet it with my tongue to bring it back together. It is cheap... and does the trick... tho if i could find a good nylon that resembles some of the old pirate "cord" i would think about spending the extra pennies on it... BTW i have been busy as of late.... one fortress done, one battery done, one small boat, and another ship... i just haven't got around to clearing a space to shoot pictures of them in.... the ship uses some floss for rigging but i am not big on rigging lego ships in the first place, but i just cant stand not having a forestay/bowprit sail on my ships anymore so i must rely on some rigging... i promise picture and story to come... I am attempting to do a website too so all of you who dont want to read long posts can just see pictures, and those who want to read story can go to the site... then again i am trying to also write my masters thesis on great lakes naval strategy at the same time... and that kinda takes priority... lol

Doh, i missed that post due to school myself lol. we will miss you evil willy, and will serve you well Mr. Tiber

Quick adds... um how could you not list in movies good old erol flynn?????? The Seahalk Captain Blood Both are classics... and without sound you have the douglass fairbanks movies, the original swashbuckler of the big screen The Black Pirate I know there is more with him, just don't know the titles The Crimson Pirate with Burt Lancaster, though i havent seen that either... Also another book and multiple movies would be: Robinson Crusoe The book was based off of a pirate marooning story, though pirates play a minor role past that... still deals with a shipwrecked sailor. I assume we are talking about fiction? because I could name my whole bibliography of pirate non fiction books (ill spare you the naval history ones...)
