Heroica RPG - Quest #132: The Clans Under the Mountain
CMP replied to Waterbrick Down's topic in The Heroica Archive
Atramor walked up to the bar alongside Alfred, nodding as the golem stole his question and instead glancing sideways at the Rockling. "Nice hat. What're ya' goin' on about, mate?" -
Hoke cracks open a few boxes of supplies Knife-Tongue has apparently scavenged and hoarded. Phoenix Essence Stun Bomb x3 Grand Potions The hobgoblin looks over his shoulder as he undoes a multitude of handmade locks on the door down the hall. "Go ahea' am 'ake fhofe, wom'f 'o amy goo' wayimg im fhewe." He then pushes the door open. Illdria folds up her maps. "Good, we're almost finished here. Are we checking out storage or going to straight to my ship?" "Oh, yef....cap'm ha' me become a Mawaufer affew fha' affaiw." "Turns out working with heroes is dangerous business, I didn't want any of us getting killed in the process.. If how you rigged this bit of the base is any indication I'd say the training was well-advised."

I recommend an aggressive propaganda campaign. In my experience people respond well to big lime green lettering. And carefully applied bursts of semi-nuclear flame.

Can't fault Octan for being prepared for anything.

Thank you commander. I am happy to report my first operation was a success: enemy supply pod blown the hell up on Linopeia III. I think we should concentrate our efforts there, then move along the gate line until we reach sector A06, the planet Guinevere, and plenty of gold.
-
The first of our units have made touchdown on Linopeia III. Other sapient presence was reported to be negligible, but a ping on our shiny new radar deployed over our landing zone told us otherwise. They called upon on their most skilled special forces agent to investigate, naturally. The atmosphere is to be breathable, barring the sandstorms that blow in from those big damn dust bowls that fill up into lakes once it gets wet enough. Me and Sixer made it to the edges of one of the lakes, and found the thing just as the nearest sun began to set: looked like an Octan deep space supply pod, tore up the ground all along the crash trajectory. We send those out too. Really tough refrigerators that are supposed to crash on planets we might colonize later. Now, some special forces operative would probably try to hack the thing open. Dig out, crack open the contents, and sort them out to be distributed at the nearest outpost. Finder keepers, right? Maybe it's a trapped decoy, maybe it's not, but either way we get something out of it, be it supplies, information, or whatever we can strip the pod itself down to, without a sense for what the thing represents. Luckily, I am not one of these special forces operatives. I wasn't sure how to pull of a pirate or spying action without other corporations having an actual presence nearby, but I hope this is a pretty reasonable concept, and that it falls under the 'sabotage enemy equipment' category.

Dyric steps on A1 very slowly - the tile remains quite steadfast underfoot. He steps into the doorway opposite the one they entered with ease. The party has crossed the trapped kitchen. Everyone gains one scaled level of experience, and the party starts following the path. "Maybe...but these look especially roughly made. It seems like the vampires were expecting the Crimson Crown to strike, and that's why they blocked everything off. But still, traps doesn't seem like their usual method..." As the party steps into the hall on the western side of the kitchen, a sudden cough surprises them, echoing from the supply closet to their left. Illdria wheels around, hand on her rapier, but she only stares for a moment in surprise at the hobgoblin awakening in the depths of the closet. "Cap'm?! Mewvim? Hewoef?" "Knife-Tongue! There you are. What in the blazes-" "Knifey! I knew ye'd find yer way outta their hands, hahah." "Yef, I fwippef away whiwe fhe Cwimfim Cwom mae feiw mofe. I'fe beem fwaying wow ever finfe." "...and then set traps to keep the Bonies from following you. Smart. " Knife-Tongue nodded. "I bwokef off fhe way 'owm fhis haww, af weww, bu I shouwf be abwe 'o cweaw fhe way." "You seem to have found your way around well enough. Good thing I made sure you knew how to wield a blade a few months back...any additions you could make to our maps here?" The captain hands over the maps. Knife-Tongue nods and scribbles down some additions before handing them back. "I'fe goo' 'o fee Hewoica if hewe af weww." He pulls his blades out of the storage boxes he's lodged them in, sheathes them, and gives a short bow to Thalion, Hybros, and Guts. "I wouwf be happy to joim youw gwoup. We muf fim Fafief, bu we awe fafe hewe fow a 'ime." "And pay Melville a visit, too..." mumbles Illdria as she pores over the new map for a bit. "Thoughts, heroes? The fact that the other cell is blocked off doesn't bode well for finding Zasies there."

"Low supply? Damn, I thought this city was pretty much built on Mythril.." -
Guts looks around with his Magnifying Glass on A2 and determines that B1 is a trap. A large fireplace sits across C1 and D1. The side Erik examines doesn't explode in his face, but there's nothing of interest either. I'm taking pictures for the next scene but there's no 'clear path' just yet.
-
Guts determined there were three unrevealed traps around B2, and two around A2. Erik stepped slowly onto C2 and could tell two unrevealed traps surrounded it. With Hybros' help Mortimer soon regained consciousness, although at 1 health.

"Sounds impressive. Bit like a paladin, but unlike them ya' look more like a real warrior and less like a plated-up priest. Did the golems 'round here have a master at some point? Is that what set 'em off in this invasion?" -

Atramor scratches his chin and nodded to the warrior dwarf. "Aye, Alfred here's harmless. Ya' look like a dwarf who's spent time fightin', are ya' onna the mine guards? I hear the golems are a bit of a problem." -
Erik steps slowly onto B3. There are two unrevealed traps surrounding it.
-
The discussion and the rules contradict eachother - here it says 20 Domination Points more than other corporations to control a planet, while in the rules it says 30. Which is accurate?
-
What Myrddyn said. There was a total of three unrevealed traps around E5. Unperturbed, he thoroughly examined the table in front of him, including the mushroom atop of it. The spores, however, proved to be more than the warden could handle, and inhaling immediately knocked Em unconscious. Guts is unable to get a good read with his magnifying glass because of the trap on B5. Will he search A3 anyway?
-
Em put his foot down on E6 and slowly moved to stand on the tile - it remained motionless this time, luckily. There were no unrevealed traps around E6. Hybros restores Em to full health. "Maybe. But if you left things alone, I can just about promise there would've been a much worse all-out war in the making." There was one unrevealed trap by A4, and two of them around B4. There are no unrevealed traps by D6.
-
Mortimer's prediction was spot-on, as the trap under D5 blew up violently right underneath him as he stepped on it. Hybros pops open the lid to the barrel and rummages around, pulling out a fair number of food items. x2 Chicken Drumsticks (+1 max health on consumption) Greasy Sausage (+2 max health on consumption) Milk (Restores 15 health and ether on consumption) Erik steps forward two tiles. Neither of them are surrounded by any unrevealed traps. "There's two and a half centuries of success behind Heroica. You can't just abandon your group's cause over a few bad apples. The same goes for the Wolfgang, have you stepped into the Hovels lately? Every organization has people like that, but what matters is whether or not they know what to do to fix things and how to get there. It's never going to be perfect, but people chafe under the Houses every day."

Atramor nodded towards the house he'd been directed to. "Our Lady Thisbeen lives there. She's the one that has the only piece of Mythril at the shop on hold. Seems relevant. Honestly though, I ain't quite sure where to go from here. Fru mentioned a group of adventurers found that big vein a few years ago, aye? The likeliest place for them to stop on their way in would be the tavern, obviously. Maybe we ought to find it and ask some questions about them. After we see this Chief, I s'pose." -
I should've noted you can't move diagonally, sorry. Mortimer moves two tiles. There is one more unrevealed trap around C6, and two unrevealed traps around C5. "I know a thing or two about necessary evils, but half the time they only exist because people are too afraid to challenge them. Maybe a ruling government is what we need - seems like a silly sentiment coming from someone like me, but one government would have a better time dealing with this crap than six people all pulling at Eubric's strings. If there has to be a necessary evil ruling the city, it may as well be the Wolfgang, they know how things really work in the world." Illdria shrugged. "Between them and Heroica things might actually change around here."
-
As Em put his foot down on the next tile, the crunch of glass could be heard underneath it, and with a ringing bang, the trap exploded, sending Em flying back into the wall. Hybros quickly rushed to feed Em three Potions. Illdria pulled the warden to his feet. "Somebody really didn't want us getting past here." "Beats me how they cook under these conditions!"
-
It's the other way around, letters across the top and numbers down the side. I probably should've labelled that in the picture. Em steps onto B6 gingerly. The tile creaks under his weight, but little else. Em determines there is 1 trap within the surrounding 8 tiles. I might not've been entirely clear about the magnifying glass thing, either. You can stand on a tile (assuming it has not been trapped and you can reach it) and use the magnifying glass to reveal a random trap within the surrounding 8 squares, but only if one has not been revealed already, by the glass or otherwise.
-
Almost at once, the F6 tile cracked into two as Hybros stepped on it, a bear trap that had been buried underneath snapping up to catch his ankle, letting go only after it caused a substantial amount of bleeding, reducing the imp to one health as his wings skittered about to get him back to the doorway. The bone slid down onto the trap, but failed to activate it. Apparently the weight was not enough to set it off. With F6 having been trapped, neither Erik nor Hoke could perform their attempted actions.
