It's more or less a 50/50 split between Mass Effect and Star Wars. That's the majority of the sci-fi media I've been exposed to yet that's more content than anyone can absorb. I enjoy the way the defenses work in Mass Effect (requiring certain ammo and weapon types to destroy) as opposed to just the straight damage reduction of Heroica's defense.

I still think reskin is the wrong way to go with this. Even if it's a spin-off, there's so much more that can be done and improved on. There's a lot about the core system that works too well to change, namely the way the Hall and Quests work, but on the mechanics side of things there's still a lot that I think can be refined.

Like say if Player A, B, and C are attacking a target, Player D can Flank them for double damage or something of the sort. And in place of the elemental system, a more basic combat triangle could be used instead...plasma damage does extra damage to armor, ballistic damage does extra damage to health, shock/electric damage does extra damage to shields. So enemies could have up to two layers of defenses to strip down before doing damage.

That's a lot of work for one minor difference. I considered in the past that such a concept might benefit from being run by a group of three or four people rather than just one. Sandy's done an incredible job running this game, but it'd be much less of a workload on a group to work out main plot stuff and manage things. I have a small list of things I think it would be cool to implement but like Khorne it's pretty much all theoretical at this point. If the Heroica universe does end in around two years it's not a bad idea to consider the future of the game system.

I've had a list of really vague list of ideas for that for like the past two years now. And it'll probably stay that way. But there are certain things about the way Heroica works that are too well-put together to not use if somebody were to make such a spiritual successor. (I'm talking the overall concept of Quests and Heroica Hall itself, not in-game mechanics themselves. This forum was more or less a disorganized mess when it came to roleplaying with I think one exception, but that was long before I joined.)
