Blue Track (1966-79) and Gray Track (1980-91) Box Images
zephyr1934 replied to LEGO Historian's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Nice! Thanks for all of the details. Ah, that might explain why HO trains will fit nicely on a pair of 1x tiles with two studs gap, as per this post. -
She's beautiful in motion, and takes those mean, nasty, tight lego curves with ease.

Oh, you might be a few standard deviations out there, but the long tail spans much further beyond you... You should definitely keep a couple of your favorites. For the rest, you have taken the time to take all of these fantastic shots. You should sell some of them individually on EBay. There are few folks who could afford your entire collection, but many folks who can afford a few pieces and many folks who would treasure having just one of your originals. There are folks selling copies of Tony Sava's models for a hefty sum on EBay (though the hard part there is simply collecting all of the pieces, if you include labor I'm not sure they are coming out too much ahead). Since you already have the parts, the labor is moot. You also have the name recognition. Try selling a signed model and see what happens. Your name recognition should boost the sale price and collector value. And since you've been so generous with your designs over the years, it would set the original apart from the reproductions. Who knows, some of your MOCs might even wind up in a museum some day.

You know, that was a fantastic set with a lot of play value and a lot of thought put into it (but having recently built it you know that). I think the track doors were the weakest part in the original design. The actual parts for the doors are nice, but the gap is not. Though after seeing the alternatives I would have to agree that there is no perfect fix.

Lego REALLY does not like leaks and they have been cracking down on as many sources as possible. Typically if/when someone posts an unauthorized leak here on EB it gets caught quickly and removed. Of course folks keep talking about it, but the actual photos get pulled down.

There are a lot of clever details worked in to that engine, e.g., the "hinges" on the smokebox door. The color scheme looks great and with the train all together it is mighty fine work.

Oh yes, having the occasional bump of an old topic seems fine, but every few months someone comes in and starts bumping a lot of old topics with minor comments. Certainly understandable for someone new to the forum, but if it happened every day it would be impossible to keep up with the new discussions mixed in with the old. As noted above, not a big problem. And just about everyone around here likes to see new faces. I just wanted to give you feedback (give it a week or two of being active on the forum and you'll see what I mean, it is hard enough to keep up with the active threads). Also, as noted in my previous post, it is certainly okay to bump an old topic if you have something substantial to add. Speaking strictly for myself, I also see no problem with occasionally bumping some topic that is just simply incredible (as marook suggested). I say "personally" in this case because I'm not sure what the official EB guidelines are.

Utterly brilliant ballast (and I had not noticed the "rail holders" with the jumper plates)

But could you build your own doors out of plates, e.g., using the following for the tops?
-
Oh wow, the new design is a ton better than the original 6 wide. Keep up the great work.

Wow, I don't know whether to say, "what a beauty" or "what fantastic engineering"... well, okay, both... but which first? This locomotive really captures the feel of the logging railroads and all of the detailing just carries it over the top. Definitely keep us posted on the bullfrog snot and performance on steep grades (not easy to do with any lego steam engine, much less an articulated one). In any event, great work!

Greetings new friend, while indeed there are all sorts of interesting bits in old threads like this, please do not bump an old topic just to add a small comment or ask a quick question. Few of the readers will remember the original discussion and it just becomes confusing for the regular readers. If you have questions for the original poster you can try sending them a private message. You can also start a new thread if you have a related topic that is not a direct continuation. Of course if you do have a substantial follow up to an old thread it is sometimes appropriate to do a bump like this, e.g., "I finally built this and found...."

I've broken those 2-3 times, the pin takes a lot of force when the truck is the first thing to hit the floor. As noted by Dr_Spock, Lego customer service should be willing/able to send out a free replacement. PS, the box did say "high speed train" though... why shouldn't it go high speeds? No derailment is fun (well, aside from AlmightyArjen's fine work), but it is refreshing to find that after you've found all the pieces it usually goes back together fairly quickly, or in the worst cases like this, you only have one broken part. Try that in HO.

To the extent that you had to do trade offs, they all look very minor, well done. The one thing that looks odd to me though is the height of the main doors. They were odd on the original build and were clearly a compromise by lego in the design to avoid making a special door. Did you consider somehow extending the door (plate built doors?) or lowering the arch and hinges one brick?

If I recall correctly, in the kickstarter thread MEModels said that their international shipping calculator has a bug and is over charging. So if you see an insane postage fee email them for clarification before proceeding.

Welcome back to the light age. So many of those models still look contemporary even though they were built with the bricks of over 10 years ago, e.g., the DB 103 is similar to the one in this thread only lacking the tan (presumably the yellow was to be consistent with 7740 and I think tan was very rare back then) or the TGV compared to the HE. Great stuff and even more impressive given the bricks that were available at the time, thanks for sharing.

Failed Model: Semi-Accidental Fusion of 6w and 7w

That is coming along nicely, looks like the iterative design process is serving you well. In the mean time, good skill on the finals! -
MOC: MEC 573 (EMD GP7, aka "Mr. Miller's Engine")

That is fantastic work the way you found so many stock lego pieces to hit all of the finer details of this locomotive... and then the way you tackled the PF on a diesel with a 4 wide hood, impressive.
-
Great idea. You could probably replicate the same functionality of the old technic connectors with the new ones by inserting a half pin in the hole. Or replace them altogether and instead use a technic brick with an axle hole.

Indeed, she's looking fantastic, and I like how you've incorporated the crane in the assembly shots.

TRAIN TECH Help, General Questions & Talk to the Staff
zephyr1934 replied to WesternOutlaw's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Welcome aboard, you should have a lot of fun with the lego trains and you have a great starting point. ME models is a third party supplier of lego compatible parts. Their web page is here, and the whole discussion on their new tracks can be found here. If you are just starting out and building lego sets you should be fine with the standard lego curves. At some point you may find that the standard curves are not sufficiently realistic or you may start building longer MOCs, at which point the wide radius offered by the ME tracks becomes a wonderful solution.- 578 replies

Yes, 60052 has the PF parts you asked about, the complete part inventory can be found here. While the EN instructions only tell you how to power it with an XL motor (not included in 60052, but currently on sale at S@H in the US), you could also modify the tender so that you could use the train motor from 60052. However, if you go this route you will probably want to remove the gearing from the EN and only use a single red band on the driver wheels (exactly one, not one on each side), both to reduce unnecessary drag.
