Tank track issues
Burf2000 posted a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
So as you may or may not seen, I build a huge robot called george (I am honestly not promoting it) The tracks layout is pretty big. I am using 2 xl motors per side, driving the large sprockets with the weight of the robot being on 8 sprockets (4 per track) per side (so in total 16 touching the ground). Yesterday I tried to improve this running by using little sprockets for the the track that touches the floor as I thought little sprockets would turn easier. Did not work so well. I then tried using more sprockets to distribute the weight better, again, did not seem to work as I thought it would Then I used old technic wheels with no tyres where the inner track but fitted inside the rim, this I thought would make it go a lot better, but nope So, my question is, when building large tracked vehicles, should you use large or small sprockets, many or few (weight distribution), or not even use sprockets but wheels? -
I thinking of building a second Robot (see George) and so I always thought that the XL motor was the most powerful one available Looking at http://www.philohome.com/motors/motorcomp.htm , is it the NXT motors? What motor is the best to use for pure strength even if I need to gear it down?

Hey there, I been meaning to ask this for a while. So, I read you should not really run more than 2 XL motors off a PF rechargeable battery, however how many should you run off a train controller / Dacta control Lab? What about if you had xl motors running off a nxt? Should you not run more than 2 at a time. I am trying to think of ways to power my robot better and it uses a lot of xl motors

Large Wheels

I have bent a few parts just because the XL motor is so powerful! Saying that I need more power! -

Where can I get one of these from then? -
Hey people. Has anyone got any good designs for building large useable technic wheels? A friend of mine built one for me which is probably 12" tall but the concept does not scale up much more. So thinking maybe a 20" wheel that is pretty strong. Building large wheels has alway's puzzled me.

I tried that so many times, thanks ! -
Finally I got to make a video of George at The Great Western Lego Show which is our flag ship event for Brickish The link is here Info George (version 2) is fully functional 5 foot 7" robot. Controlled via a PlayStation 2 controller, he can move about, rotate his upper body, move his arms / shoulders and grab on to items. His head also rotates, moves up and down and if you get too close, his eyes will rotate. Features 1 NXT that has a PS2 Mindsensor wireless connector, hiTechnic infrared sensor and a ultra sonic sensor. 2 9v lights for mouth 1 9v old style motor which rotates eyes 6 medium PF motors which drive head (up down, left right), turns body, pneumatic switch for claws, and elbow joints for arms. 6 XL motors. 4 used to move the robot about, 1 on each arm for shoulder joint. 2 small actuators for neck 6 large actuators for shoulders

I still use the first one quite a lot but don't have many of the second one. Added to Bricklink wanted list!
