Middle Earth Contest Voting Topic
MiloNelsiano replied to Ecclesiastes's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
Category A: #2 #4 Category B: #1 #4 Category C: #2 #4 Cat. C was an especially tough call, but there were some great entries in all categories! -
Number three. But those others are really good too.

It's from the movie dumb and dumber. It was a pretty big comedy in the US about 20 years ago, but I'm not sure it was very big in Germany.

Great representation and perfect Lloyd minifigure.

Thank you all for the kind words. I'm glad so many people like the Hunter, he was definitely one of my favorites while making these. Thanks. Working with limited pieces is definitely frustrating. The positive I've found in it however, is that it forces you to look at the pieces you do have in different ways that you normally would, allowing you to come up with some unique combinations. Thanks. As mentioned earlier, it was from one of the Fantasy Trolls. I had a few ideas for some dwarves, but couldn't get them to come out quite right. I was actually trying to make a dwarf while playing with the Hun Warrior helmet when I realized the bones stuck in there quite nicely, which soon led to the antlers. This really made me laugh. I'm glad you liked it. Glad it's a favorite! I was sure someone would catch it. I was originally going to call him the Warlock Prince of Ramgna, but thought the description would be enough of a hint. I really wish there was a helmet option for the Witch King. I'm glad you liked those, especially the Caravan Driver, just because he was one I was worried was too generic or plain. I tried to keep it as similar to actual CMFs as I could (including the animal suit mascot), while also staying true to Historica. The Housewife idea came to me pretty early, but I wasn't sure I'd be able to make it look 1) natural, and 2) like a woman. It doesn't quite look completely natural when you look at her from the side, but it's really not bad.

When this contest was announced, I was really bummed out, as most of my minifigs are a long ways away from me, and I didn't think there was any way I would be able to enter. Eventually, I decided I would make a few figures anyway, just for fun. However, it was way too much fun, and I decided to BrickLink as much as possible (right before Christmas) to make it work. I really wanted to use flesh figures, but thought that yellow-toned stayed true to the CMF line. I also tried to keep the names generic, and the descriptions basic, as that to me is the spirit of the CMF line, as it allows the collector to be more creative with the figures and how they are used. I also tried to take advice others gave me on my last build, that I need to use a better background and/or edit the background. I edited the photo of the overall shot to try and get a feel for it, but I think I need to find some tutorials on how to do it better, as it took WAY too many hours for one picture. Anyway, I hope you enjoy! Criticism and comments are always welcome. Avalonia Vineyard Worker Works in a Vineyard, picking fruit. Always gives each tree a hug after. Albion Heavy Guard Only deployed for the most serious of threats. Assassin A master of disguises. No one would ever suspect a beautiful Avalonian Lady of being an assassin. Flag Bearer Has the great honor of carrying Avalonia's colors during battle. Nocturnus Headsman Some say Nocturnus uses Headsman for as small a crime as petty thievery. Gaoler One of several reasons to avoid imprisonment in Nocturnus. Pumpkin gruel is another. Butcher Because Nocturnus is Vegan free! And any kind of meat is fair game. Warlock Prince Can be killed by no mortal man. Mitgardia Border Sentry The most dedicated snowflake counter you'll find. Housewife Do: Compliment her beard. Do NOT: Mistake her for a man. Drummer Leads troops into battle (and the occasional dance). Deer Suit Guy Hunter Years of experience have taught him that with a proper disguise, the deer come right to him. Kaliphlin Dark Mage Expelled from the University for practicing forbidden magic. Princess Not an actual princess. Only thinks she is one because that's what Daddy calls her. Sell-Sword Protects whoever pays the most! Caravan Driver Rides his camel all over Historica if there's trade to be done.

I believe Mister Phes runs the site. He said a few months ago that Lego decided classic-pirates no longer needed a Lego Ambassador, but I wouldn't think that means the site gets taken down.

Didn't see the archer in the tree at first. Gorgeous build, especially the waterfall.

iPhone actually. I haven't tried on the iPad yet. But as someone mentioned earlier if you click where the name should be it goes to the link and then the text changes colors and you can see it. -

Was there a winner for prize group G? I only see through F. Or does group G rotate in on even days like the turtles did last year? -
I'm really liking your combinations and how effectively you used pieces from far outside the historic theme. I'm impressed!

My wife and I are hoping for a new couch to go in our new apartment. Thanks again CopMike for an amazing contest! P.S. Any chance of a sneak peak of the prizes like you did last year? -
Book II - Avalonia: Guild sign-up and Discussion
MiloNelsiano replied to Rogue Angel's topic in Guilds of Historica
I like fleshie figures because I generally build with mostly earth tones and neutral colors. I just don't use too many bright colors in my mocs. However the appeal to yellow is always there as there are way more faces and expressions available. My pirate mocs currently all use yellow because I was much better able to depict the characters I wanted with my yellow faces. I haven't really messed with my pirate stuff in over a year though. -

Book II Chapter III: Dwarven Statues
MiloNelsiano replied to MiloNelsiano's topic in Guilds of Historica
Thanks! The second and third parts I've determined pretty easy to do. I don't think photo editing is an option for me, but I've been trying to figure out something that works well as a backdrop. Your ikea blind (if I remember correctly) looked like a good idea. I just haven't found anything real suitable in my possession that I can set up easily on our balcony where I typically take pictures. -
Book II Chapter III: Dwarven Statues
MiloNelsiano replied to MiloNelsiano's topic in Guilds of Historica
Thanks to all for the feedback. I didn't really intend to take pictures of the inside of the hand, but only did at the last second to show more detailing of the fingers (it seemed difficult to see their shape from the outside alone). I meant to mention this in the original post but clearly forgot. I also considered taking apart a different build so I'd have enough pieces to detail the inside as well, but just wasn't quite ready to take apart that build yet. I was satisfied with it as I wasn't planning on showing the inside at all. And as far as my background goes...I would love to have a better setup or even some decent photo editing software to make my photos look better, but I just don't currently. As I've mentioned in a previous post, building with Legos is my hobby, not taking pictures! -
This Looks better to me. Maybe try to find a nocturnus flag with a gold border rather than silver one, just to keep it all uniform.
-
It definitely looks less crowded with them smaller and without the flags. I do think that the colors should be there though, if it's possible to do so without crowding the image. I would suggest trying (it might not work any better) to use the shield tags the members got for their involvement in the first book.

Book II Challenge III Dwarven Affairs
MiloNelsiano replied to Ecclesiastes's topic in Guilds of Historica
Here is my Category A entry: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=101867 -
Before Dwarves go to battle, they will typically visit ancient Dwarven statues, to pay tribute to their ancestors. One place many Dwarves visit before a march is the Hand of Aargoth. It was once an enormous statue standing guard over the Avalonian border, standing over the site where an Elvish tribe had once lived, before the Dwarves removed them from the disputed land. The statue was built as a warning to the elves to stay farther south. However, the sole surviving member of the tribe waited until the statue was finished before using his remaining energy to curse the land where the statue stood, causing the entire statue to sink into the ground, leaving only only hand above ground, as it is seen today. It now serves as a reminder to both Dwarves and Elves of their hatred and mistrust of each other. Of course, it is very common knowledge that Dwarves visit statues vefore marching to battle. When rumors that Dwarves planned to march to war had reached Lord Orys and his son Osric of Oros, they began dispatching their best rangers to all the known Dwarven statues to see if the rumors were true. Here we see one such ranger listening in on a pair of Dwarves talking to their ancestors, praying for strength against Drow and Elf alike. No doubt the other rangers visiting other statues will report similar findings. It seems that the rumors were true, and Dwarves praying for strength to fight against Elves could only mean war--unless, Men are able to intervene and mediate whatever started the trouble between Dwarves and Elves this time. I had been working on this "Hand Statue" for a while before this challenge was announced. I had originally designed it to be the top of a broken tower, but could not get it to look right. I thought it looked better as a ruined statue, but feel like I may have lost some of the shape in the building and rebuilding. Anyway, when this challenged was finally announced, I decided I had to fight for the side of men, as that's more the path my character would take, but the ruin seemed to be pretty good for the other side of the challenge. Eventually I came up with this idea, and went with it. This was the first time I've ever attempted to build snow, and can see I definitely need some practice (and more white pieces). It was also meant to look like the snow had blown into a pile at the base of the hand (in case anyone is wondering why there's no snow further away from the statue). Anyway, it's probably not the best build, but I enjoyed building it anyway. Thanks for looking, and comments and criticism is very welcome!

Book 2 Challenge 3: Category A: Old Faces
MiloNelsiano replied to mccoyed's topic in Guilds of Historica
This looks like it would fit pretty closely to something I'm working on. I think old ruined mocs can be much more interesting than other ones and I think you've shown that potential here.
