Compared to what? Shoeboxes? Some of us live in a (single!) country the size of continental Europe, with a population density around 4 people per square kilometre.

Basically, unless you are Bartholemew Docken, you're playing a role. Heck, in that sense even 'Brickdoctor' is a role...

The guild of Invision polices alchemists and surgeons, preventing outbreaks of poisoning, disease and controlling drugs. Shadeaux exist as an economic counterbalance to the Hinkwells, preventing monopolistic practices. The Ji Pei are technologically innovative but also seek to control the uses of what they have designed/ built.

Good thing Nerwen put the shackles on, the bat could easily have slipped away during all the talking... We understand the need for good sleep though!

Heroica RPG - Quest #65: Breaking Down the Door

And having secured goods instead of payment, our task is now to escort him from the building and evict him, given that he has clearly stated he does not intend to rent this room any longer. That is the path of least bloodshed. For if you are concerned about bloodshed you also need weigh the blood of the gang leaders upstairs, who are paying guests of our employer. Man-bat seems bent on murdering them. You cannot leave this room without condemning someone, either man-bat, those upstairs or your own principles. Which is it to be, Assassin of the Light? -

I did not call him mindless, but deluded. He cannot even state his own goals without self contradiction. As for poverty, the man who disdains money is not poor. Your friend here pretends to be above such concepts as wealth and places no value on it, further removing himself from society. And disagreeing with his path but not standing in his way is a very weak and milky disagreement. You are right to say the end does not justify the means, in fact the end is justified by the means. If one needs to take the step of murder to achieve one's end, it would be best to examine one's motives and goals. Nerwen paused and laughed. Killing Wolfgang generals? The men upstairs are not. In fact, they oppose the Wolfgang and are striving to remain free of its control. Killing them would aid the Wolfgang and further it's control over the city. You might not be able to see all ends, but surely you can see what is in front of you. -

Nerwen listens as the discussion turns from combat to commerce. The rogue, Dyric, casually laying down four hundred gold to cover the bat-thing's debts. The barbarian inside her raged and the aching urge to smash things that she thought she had tamed rose again. Had she provoked it in order to fuel her desire to break things? Perhaps she thought, and her frustration spilled into speech. Well. That is super. Friends with this thing are you now? Want to be in the same league as Justice here, Dyric? I asked you what you meant when you said that you were an assassin of light. You replied that you saw it as your duty to take out high priority sources of evil. I wondered then who chooses those sources, and I wonder the same thing about man-bat. He sits not merely as accuser, but as judge and executioner too. Beholden to none of the community that he proclaims to defend, accountable to no one but himself, a self he is so ashamed of that he hids away, shunning examination of his deeds in fear that they would be exposed as vigilante murder, indistinguishable from the injustice he trumpets to combat. I, Nerwen Calmcacil, have seen two and a half centuries of men, deluded by the thought that they are strongest alone, hoarding power like a child desperately clings to a handful of sand. I know what it is to stand in judgement of others and know that it is a grievously heavy thing. I held the apostate emperor of Dastan's life, but despite his crimes would not sentence him to death without the knowledge of his peers and community. I held the Admiral of the Bonepartes' life but would not condemn him without consideration of the destabilisation that his death would cause. I held the life of the one called the Dark General, and spared it, not for grand reason, but because I thought I was too exhausted to fight, a mistake I regretted bitterly and whose cost was paid by the innocent of Miranda. And tha is just in these last years, as a supposedly accursed sellsword. I can recount scores more and each lives in my memory, those that the world counts as success and those as failure. Life has consequences and so does death. No man can see all ends and act with impunity toward an ideal. Anyone who claims otherwise is a blinded madman who acts against the good of the people he claims to be helping. By all means, strip him of his weapons and chemicals, disassemble his lair and render his twisted bitterness toothless. But do not aid him, for his methods are poison to the soul and by following them, you will, in the end, betray your principles and become the thing you seek to destroy. -

Nerwen draws the shackles of war from her satchel. Popping the crocodile handbag away she places one end of the shackles of war on her wrist. We can do fetters if needed. If you are bent on attacking the guests of this inn upstairs, the path lies through us. And it is not an easy one. Will you go quietly? -

Then the thief is made a thief by keeping what is not his. You keep saying justice owes no man anything. You are a fool. There is no justice except what men practice. But all this is waffle. Your choices are these. Pay the 400 gold and we leave, or we escort you from the building right now. -
There already are aren't there? Things like the Society for Oppression of Witches and Guts' gentle sounding out of heroes to support his 'kingship', the small group that support the Wolfgang, the older heroes from quests #1-3, those that fought in Dastan... Admittedly some of those groups overlap, and membership is... informal, but groupings exist. And could easily be the seeds of more overt alliances.

Nerwen swings her mourning star idly. The glow from the spiked head causing faint shifting shadows on the wooden floor. You are free to try your arm against those upstairs. But first I have a question for you. If you saw a man running off with a merchant's purse full of, say 400 gold pieces, if he had stolen it, unrepentantly, would you stop him? Would you prove the error of his ways upon his body? Or do you approve of theft and larceny despite your huffing about justice and opposing wickedness? -

Nerwen's keen eyes had adjusted to the gloom. She could see the axe clearly and to the man-bat she spoke firmly, certain and sure. Krook is dead. Murdered we suspect. Now the inn belongs to another, fairly exchanged and bound by the laws of property. You are not the owner, your place here is purchased. If you would uphold part of the law, you must uphold it all or your stance is merely another self-serving salve to prickly conscience. As for cronies upstairs, the fact that we entered from that direction is not proof of allegiance to their methods or goals. State cause or leave off assumptions. I say to you, if you see yourself as some kind of knight in the dark or as a great detective fighting on the side of the oppressed citzenry, if you think that entitles you to recognition and reward, step into the light. Go on. Be recognised as the author of your actions. But if you hide by day, your mask and disguise must be complete. You must needs be a rent paying, unremarkable, unnoticed tennant of a quiet room in a quiet inn. So, which are you Justice? -

You are behind in your rent. We have been sent to collect it. We will require 400 gold. Also, given that you did not answer your door and we were require to take other measures to speak to you, you may also be charged for the repair to the floor and ceiling. But we will start with the rent. And since you would be rid of us quickly, I suggest you fetch it now. -

Drawing her mourning star, the head a sullen red glow from the ruby embedded inside, Nerwen stepped lightly into the hole and dropped gracefully into the room below. -

Weapons? What did you have in mind? Seeing Dyric stand triumphant amongst splinters of floorboard, Nerwen smiled politely. And we have our exit, thank you again for your time Gentlemen. And if you wish to speak further about the ship, leave word with the novice, Johero Blackhorn at the temple of Sem. He will see that I receive it. Speaking to Cronk and Xander standing outside in the hall, You had best be ready for battle, we have a way into room 203. Nerwen follows Dyric when he is ready. -

Since our friend is bent on doing what he can with the floor, we interupt you for a little longer. I do apologise. Since we are here, I have another question for you. I recently came into possession of a ship. But a ship is only useful if it is doing work. Do either of you gentlemen have things which need to be moved, discretely? The other owners also work for Heroica and, due to certain services rendered, are on good terms with the Bonepartes. There would be no issue, I imagine, with searches, seizures or onerous customs duties. -

Thank you for your time gentlemen. Dyric, these fine citizens will not be here for much longer, we can come back later when it will not disturb them, ripping up the floorboards. Nerwen waits for Dyric to speak, then follows him if he knocks on another door. -

Whilst Dyric searches for access to the floor below, Nerwen asks Were either of you gentlemen familiar with Mr Krook, the previous owner of this establishment? If so, can you think of anyone who benefits from harming him? -
Sorry Brickdoctor, your solution is not correct. There is only one correct solution. As for ruining the ruse, meh, I couldn't have sustained it once we were in anyway, Nerwen isn't U'kin. It was just a way to get in, that's all. And you will note, Nerwen said that the janitor's name was U'reeves, not that she was the janitor. But was quite happy for that to be what the listeners assumed. Nerwen strives not to tell outright lies, but is adept at misdirection and creating incorrect assumptions.

Nerwen's confidence in her choices leads her to feel she is stylish enough to pull off the crocodile handbag with her outfit. Nerwen equips the crocodile handbag as her third artifact. Profound apologies for interrupting you. Our reason was simple, and has nothing to do with interfering in whatever business you are conducting. We have been hired by the proprietor of this establishment to sort out some problems with tennants. In the process need to check all the rooms issues that could further problems. As we have now checked this room and you have not reported any sightings of ghosts, or other issues, we can leave you to conclude you dealings which we remain blissfully ignorant of and entirely unconcerned with. -
