Heroica RPG - Quest#13: The Darkstar
Chromeknight replied to Rumble Strike's topic in The Heroica Archive
Looking again at the tomb, Nerwen thinks it looks like a face from certain angles. And there seems to be a box or something, on the face's forhead. Nerwen moves to the tomb to see if it is a box something and to remove it if possible -

Posting at same time... anyway spotted now. And watch that fourth wall, this is the first set where we've had one! Nerwen throws the sabre across the room, hearing it thrum as it spins in the air. It is thrown so that as it reaches Knifk it is an easy catch. Use it well friend! For those playing at home, the loot totals (adjusted for quest spending and item use) are Dak and Gorg 80g Sarick 100g, Nerwen 115g, Guts 130g and Knifk now 135g. Dak and Gorg are now top of list to get loot. (I haven't taken into account earnings from muggings. So Dak and Guts will end a bit higher if that's counted.) -

Dak, Knifk, You are both still down in the loot count. Speak up, which of you wants this weapon? Speaking to Guts she said. Now. Now is the time for talking. For revealing and deciding. Be ready. To the orcs, in their native tongue, knowing that Sorrow does not speak it. Beware! Watch her! To Sorrow, moving to stand between her and the tomb as she addresses her, saying We have brought you to your goal, brought you to your lost love. One whom you know and whose unquiet spirit knows you. Before you go any further, so that no rash decisions are made or hasty words spoken, you will tell us the story. Clearly you are older than you seem and have motives other than fulfilling a task from your purported masters. Do you come to bring him peace or to restore him to the world? -

Nerwen checks Gorg to see if he's still ok. Come on Gorg, hit the crocodile. From the front row. (Gorg, croc, front row, if he doesn't post in the next 7 or so hours.) -

Hey Guts, good thing I distracted him. Keep going everyone! Sarick! I'm unhurt! and the rest of the party, although they are a little banged up can all take another hit. Let us keep going and take this monster down. Nerwen strikes the croc from the front row Battle order Knifk Gorg Guts Dak Sarick Nerwen -
If there is a crazy in every group, and you look around and none of the others in your group are crazy, the conclusion is simple... On the cleric topic, Nerwen follows Galadrya and Celebryon, which, from the library topic, are our names for Amadea and Melodion. Some elves (obviously including Nerwen) believe they created the race of elves. I think Barur and Sylph haven't spoken regarding Gods, when they do, that will be all 7 active clerics having weighed in.

Nerwen pulls a bone from her satchel and waves it in front of the monster. When she is certain she has it's attention, she throws it to the side. Now! Hit it now while it is distracted! It won't strike back. Battle order Nerwen Knifk Guts Gorg Dak Sarick -
That's what I'm wondering, trying to determine if it's worth using it.
-
But what does that actually do? prevent free hits? prevent damage/special damage?
-
can someone please remind me what a bone does?

That's good. Nerwen speaking before was just her being a bit bossy. Turns out this party leading business is going to her head a little. It'll be interesting if she ever gets someone badly hurt, she'll take it personal. I'll make it clear if the party leader is choosing for an unresponsive player. I assume Gorg will get an action if he's pulled free of the croc's mouth? Ooof. Good strike Guts! Knifk, keep that shield up! I'm going to get Gorg. Keep hitting it! Dak. you will be ok? Give a shout if you take another hit like that! Battle order Knifk - croc, katana, front row Nerwen - pulls Gorg clear Guts Gorg Dak Sarick Dak! Knifk has his shield up, he will protect you, get in closer to do more damage! -
S.John Ross describes them as dirty little thrills, saying It's about being able to do things in game, that we'd otherwise be not simply unable to do but not permitted to do.

Battle order Knifk Gorg Dak Guts Nerwen Sarick From the front row, Nerwen uses her hammer on the beast's leg, aiming to cripple it. Sarick, the beast is not vulnerable to your magic, so save your ether. But do not use the staff, we do not want it healed! Knifk, Dak, Move left, Gorg, Guts, right. I think the beast will find it easy moving both directions at once. -

Nerwen pokes Gorg. Either he decides for the door and it will be my call to break the tie, or he will decide for the noise. Either way, stop fiddling with the shiny gems you rogues. Are you ready for battle? Come on Sorrow, bring the torch, let us go. -

Well done on spotting that gold Guts, you have a rogue's eye for that sort of thing. Are you keeping it or sharing it, just so I know for later. Is everyone ready for battle? Venomed weapons, healed up? Speak up now. It's a slithery sound you say Sarick? Yes I can hear it too. Perhaps we should leave the door be for the moment? -

Nerwen started awake. She had drifted off without even realising it. The amount of ether she had used in the last day was more than she had used in a long while. Whilst in the light trance her mind roamed her recent memories of travelling with the pale mystic. Seeing Guts trying to stare down Sorrow, with his sword drawn, though happily not pointed at her, and seeing Dak trying to reason with him she exerted herself, placing a hand on Gut's shoulder and said Now is not the time for this. Please, help clear the passage. There will come a time when choices will have to be made. But for now, we must use the world as it exists. As for who controls sorrow or why she hired us, that chain of consequences will be revealed in time. But for now, with this rock wall, it is between us and the Darkstar. That is the goal. I believe the phrase is, 'We all do what we must'. Speaking to Sorrow she said. This is the way? Hold that torch us so we can see clearly. Nerwen helps the others shift the rocks that Gorg clears with his pickaxe. -
I would have thought that any unfairness to enemies would be balanced out by the second attack's opportunity to trigger damage or special damage again...
-
Actually, it wouldn't. Heroes aren't classified the same way as enemies are, for convienience sake. All heroes are vulnerable to darkness and that's it. It was ruled that way to save QMs from headaches regarding different Heroes and to stop the possibilty of someone gaming the system to be immune to (or at least less vulnerable to) elemental attacks. Of course if you're in the hall and mock-fighting you can do whatever you please (as long as you don't break the furniture!) but it'd be Sprag's call whether he took extra damage, not the caster's. This brings up a general observation about player vs player roleplayed combat and politeness. It's ok to narrate an attack on someone, but it's poor form to narrate the effect, especially if it involves injury. Just as you'd never (well, very rarely) speak for another character or narrate their speech, so narrating their actions is also impolite. Remember, we're building a shared world here. Now for a completely random question. To all. Is there Christmas in Eubric/The Free Islands/The Heroica world? Why/Why not?

Nerwen shivers in the chilled air and scoops up the scorpion tails and the piece of parchment from out of the rubble. Venoms for Gorg and Dak, I will read the note. I'm at a different computer so I don't have my loot spreadsheet, but I think those guys are behind on the distribution. I'm sure it'll even out in the end anyway. -

Hey, no stress. None of us have ever QM'd Heroica, but we know and appreciate the hard work you're putting in. And we know it's your first time QMing too. The emphasis on a sense of story is great, it lifts the game above a dice rolling exercise. As it is, the new results actually make it harder for the party, since only Sarick and Nerwen can hurt the skeleton with attacks... As the air clears, Nerwen and the party see that only one skeleton remains. Nerwens thoughts dwell on her dwindling ether. She would have bought a tonic if she had ever had the money. As it stood she'd be less useful to the party if she could not heal them. But the enemy in front of them was immune to normal attacks. If the Orcs or the rogues attacked it, they would not harm it and only risked being hurt themselves, However, in this situation there was little choice, she would have to trust Galadrya and Celebryon would aid her. Speaking up she said to the others... You cannot harm this foe, step back. Defend Sarick by being prepared to attack if the skeleton survives from the back row. Knifk, Gorg, Dak then Guts. Sarick will attack first, then I will heal the skeleton again standing in the front. Then you in order after. Speak up if you need a rest or have a different idea! Battle order >Sarick - Skeleton Nerwen - Heal Skeleton >Knifk - Skeleton >Gorg -Skeleton >Dak -Skeleton >Guts -Skeleton I've left the others attacking ,since, if the skeleton survives, and rolls special damage against them it will hurt itself as well as them, possibly killing itself. I'm not sure how to explain how Nerwen would know that in character so she speaks about defending Sarick, which isn't really a valid action, but makes sense in context. Addressing the skeleton she shouts You will not use this poor man's bones as your instrument any longer! Galadrya of nature, dismiss this unnaturallness! Celebryon of order, banish this chaos! -

If I've read the rules correctly, the situation is better and worse. We faced Skeleton with Hat Type: Undead Health: 30/30 Bearded Skeleton Type: Undead Health: 30/30 Red Scorpion Type: Vermin Health: 20/20 Black Scorpion Type: Vermin Health: 20/20 Spider Type: Vermin Health: 18/18 Guts Mugs, Gorg Bombs and Nerwen heals Skeleton with Hat Type: Undead Health: 9/30 Bearded Skeleton Type: Undead Health: 20/30 Red Scorpion Type: Vermin Health: 15/20 Black Scorpion Type: Vermin Health: 15/20 Spider Type: Vermin Health: -0/18 Sarick's ice magic burst is a elemental spell which does 9 ice damage Undead are not weak against ice, nor are they immune. They take 9 damage each. The healing property of the weapon is not used, as far as I know, since the attack uses the weapon's WP for convenience but is not actually a weapon strike. Vermin are weak against ice magic though, and do take double damage, 18 each leaving Skeleton with Hat Type: Undead Health: 0/30 Bearded Skeleton Type: Undead Health: 11/30 Red Scorpion Type: Vermin Health: 0/20 Black Scorpion Type: Vermin Health: 0/20 Spider Type: Vermin Health: 0/18 I only want to help you ruleswise to QM, and the descriptions are great! Thanks for all your hard work. Nerwen's eyes smarted from the flash of holy light from Gorg's bomb, followed quickly after by the chilling gust of ice that swirled around the cavern. Hold your strikes people. Make sure you can see clearly before swinging! In the confusion, Nerwen was a little unsure how many foes remained. But she could tell that none of the party had been damaged, which was encouraging. No wonder your people sent you adventuring Sarick, those bursts are powerful!
