LEGO Dimensions Physical Brick Discussion
Blondie-Wan replied to Transparency for Effect's topic in LEGO Licensed
What makes you say so? A month or so ago I would've agreed, but that was because of Disney Infinity, which was surely always the major obstacle to Disney-owned characters appearing in this game. Now that it's being shut down, though, I can't help but think it opens up worlds of possibilities. Note also that Disney has been open to videogames that mix its characters with ones from other companies before - after all, the whole Kingdom Hearts series is based around that.- 527 replies

LEGO Ideas Discussion
Blondie-Wan replied to The Real Indiana Jones's topic in General LEGO Discussion
The Apollo 11 Saturn V is an iconic vehicle, it has no licensing fees associated, and it ties into the general passion for scientific exploration, discovery and research that we've seen associated with CUUSOO / Ideas projects and sets so many times before. -

Nothing is everyone's cup of tea. But I suspect there are a lot of people who are into both science and LEGO, and the high proportion of LEGO CUUSOO / Ideas sets that have something to do with scientific exploration, discovery and research - more than a quarter of them, even before today's announcement - reflects that. -

I don't think they need new molds at all, unless they go the route of the K'Nex one and throw in Blue Meanies and other non-Beatle characters. I think John, Paul, George, and Ringo will come out just fine with existing hair molds, likely the same ones used for each member in the original project. I do assume they'll be fleshtones, of course. The animated versions of them still are, after all. -

I did! Those are two of the three projects I considered most likely (the other being the Concorde). Granted, I've also been very wrong before; I never would've thought they'd do sets based on The Simpsons or The Big Bang Theory, for example... -
Hmm... We already know set # 71256 was on that leaked list as "GR", and that Gremlins is in (I'll just toot my own horn and note I guessed this early on, though I also have to admit I was dubious about that really being it), and we see both Gizmo and Stripe in this picture, suggesting they're both playable characters (i.e., they'll get figures). I now strongly suspect 71256 is a Gremlins Team Pack with Gizmo and Stripe. And I bet Gizmo's, er... gizmo... is the pink Barbie car - though of course it can't/won't use the Barbie branding. Poor Mattel, furnishing rides for two iconic characters - Gizmo and Marty McFly - but with its branding scrubbed off of both for their LEGO Dimensions appearances... (Then again, the hoverboard was an imaginary Mattel product, created for the movie; Barbie's car is a real toy that got used in the other movie. I wonder whether that would keep them from using it at all, or if they'd just call it "doll car" or something similar and include it anyway without reference to Barbie or Mattel...) I wonder what Stripe will get?

LEGO isn't copying those sets, though; they're making their own sets based on the same source material. There's a difference. And if TLG were to swear off every license just because some other construction toy company did it before, they'd have far fewer licenses they could do - and worse, those of us who are fans of those franchises and also of LEGO would be forever stuck without having nice, official LEGO portrayals of the characters and narratives we love. Is everyone who's a fan of both LEGO and, say, Pirates of the Caribbean supposed to content themselves with those lesser sets that Mega Bloks released before LEGO did theirs? For that matter, if we move beyond LEGO-style plastic brick-based systems and into construction toys in general, Star Wars has had construction toys before LEGO got them. How important is Star Wars to LEGO these days? Moreover, they already do plenty of stuff on their own; these licensed franchises that merely happen to have been previously licensed to other companies don't change that. Look at Ninjago. And Legends of Chima. And Elves. And Friends. And Nexo Knights. And Space Police. And Exo-Force. And Paradisa. And Monster Fighters. And Bionicle. And Hero Factory. And any other out of goodness-knows-how-many original IPs and themes LEGO has had over the years. Ideas sets, both licensed and not, aren't even things LEGO initiates, anyway; they're inherently fan requests - things that we fans want so badly for LEGO to do that we campaign hard for them. Is LEGO supposed to not only ignore certain properties forever if some other company briefly dealt with them first, but do so even when literally thousands of fans specifically request otherwise? -
I would love to see that. So far, though, they don't seem to like doing more than one pack of a single type other than Fun Packs or Promo Packs for any one single franchise - i.e., there's no franchise with more than one Level Pack, no franchise with more than one Team pack, etc. - so I don't know if they'd go that way, since there's already one other Adventure Time Team Pack we know about. It would be great, though, and there doesn't seem to be any reason why they can't. In the U.S., Level Packs list for $29.99, Team Packs for $24.99, and Fun Packs for $14.99, though sales and deals appear to be pretty common with the whole line. Has a price for Story Packs been revealed yet?

All the posts from young'uns in this thread who don't know what Gremlins or The Goonies or whatever are are making me feel old and withered. About as much as Teen Titans GO! and The LEGO Batman Movie count as totally different franchises from DC Comics, and even less than Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them count from each other. But here we are. (On the other hand, Midway Arcade is really like a dozen or more franchises all by itself, so I guess it all works out in the end...)
-
Wow, so much amazingness here! I'm glad to see so many new franchises and properties being added. Some of them are really surprising - I certainly wouldn't have expected Beetlejuice, but it's welcome addition. I'm also very glad to see LEGO's homegrown themes aren't being completely ignored, and from what I hear, LEGO City Undercover is a fantastic game. Now let's hope for more.im tremendously excited for Gremlins, Adventure Time, and some of these others. Now, if only I can get the game (and a console to run it on)! They actually don't; the figures here actually do use new molds, whereas the final version of the CUUSOO project fudged the look as well as possible using existing parts (and did a great job, admittedly), but it's possible the licensor stipulated that only new, character-specific molds could be used to represent them. More importantly, though, those figures weren't the core of the project; they weren't even necessarily essential to it. The project was for the treehouse - that's what that project was about, and what its supporters voted for. And LEGO hasn't made that... just these character figures, which are totally different from that, connected only in being from the same world / franchise. The CUUSOO project didn't give its creator blanket rights and credit for every single Adventure Time thing LEGO might ever want to make, only that one single idea - a set of the treehouse at that size & piece count. Also, it was a while ago that that project was declined; any number of things might have changed since then. Perhaps now, they would even be willing to do a set of the treehouse. But they didn't approve it then; perhaps they couldn't. For all we know, the rightsholder might have mixed it because some other toy company might have held the construction toy rights at that time and just not done anything with them (this does actually happen). And finally, even if we were treating every property that Ideas users propose as something they're rightfully entitled to and that LEGO shouldn't do in LEGO Dimensions unless they also do at least one Ideas set based on the fan submission(s), the fact is they have approved an Adventure Time set already, just not that one. There is a fan who is getting an official LEGO Ideas Adventure Time set made, for which he/she will get credit and royalties; it's just not that one.

21309 NASA Apollo Saturn V (LEGO Ideas)
Blondie-Wan replied to Blondie-Wan's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I love the H.M.S. Beagle as well, but it was always a long shot; it would have been much larger and more expensive than they're willing to do in Ideas just yet, especially with so many minifigures. It's still too bad, though. That said, I think both of these will be great. I actually think the Saturn V will in fact be close to the Ideas project submission's size; they surely wouldn't have made a point of mentioning it in the video otherwise. It's a pleasant surprise to get such a large set through Ideas, but the fact it's so large only in one direction - really tall, but not all that wide - surely helps. I don't think the Particle Accelerator has much chance, unfortunately (though I would love to be wrong about that one). It's relatively large - not in piece count compared to some other Ideas sets, perhaps, but it requires power functions, which adds greatly to the cost / price and which they've never included in an Ideas set yet. It's also, at least in its present form, dependent upon old elements (the old-style curved rails) they haven't made in years and for which they may no longer have usable molds. Most importantly, though, a set specifically designed to use motor power to shoot a small, hard plastic ball around the inside of a track as fast as it can go sounds like something they'd nix on safety grounds almost immediately. Still, they do have any number of sets that launch various sorts of missiles, so you never know... Meanwhile... We're getting not one but two iconic vessels of the 1960s, both of which took people to strange new worlds and fired imaginations of millions, albeit in very different ways. I think both sets will be awesome, and I'm dying to see the final versions. -
21306: The Beatles Yellow Submarine (LEGO Ideas)
Blondie-Wan replied to Blondie-Wan's topic in LEGO Licensed
Of course they know, and it's not an issue. That K'Nex set was licensed years ago, and is no longer being made; if you go to K'Nex's site, it's not even mentioned anywhere among their other products or anything - the only reference to the set anywhere is in their press release archive, where you can find the old press release from when the set was announced. Part of the whole LEGO Ideas review process is for their legal department to do all the necessary research (like checking to see whether a necessary license is available) and getting any needed licensing agreements. LEGO wouldn't have announced the set unless they'd already secured a license from the Beatles' licensing agency, and said agency wouldn't have granted the license to LEGO unless it were available (i.e., K'Nex's license for the same kind of toy had expired). The fact this LEGO set has been announced obviously means K'Nex's licensed has expired (or is about to, at the very least). (pic snipped) Ummm... Yeeeaah, no. I think we can safely assume the LEGO version will look pretty different from that one, even while being based on the same source material. Actually, I imagine it'll fairly closely resemble the original Ideas project, which looks tough to improve upon at that size / scale. I actually think the K'Nex version will retain one or two advantages, though, in all the other included figures that required special molds. I'm 99% sure LEGO's version will have figures of just John, Paul, George, and Ringo, and no one else, especially ones that would require special molds to pull off. The original project doesn't call for other characters anyway. -

Excellent choices, both, and two of the three I always thought likeliest (along with the Concorde, which didn't pass). I'm very glad to see both of these make it through. -

Oh my glob! I assume "KR" is indeed Knight Rider, and that it's most likely a Fun Pack, in which case we should know already not only the playable character but also the vehicle/gadget, but I'll wait for confirmation before putting it on the list.
-
My pleasure! Looking back, I think I came off a little brusque, and if so, I apologize. I was just startled that someone here wouldn't be familiar with those movies. But I meant no offense!
-
Arguably, yeah. Granted, the Gremlins also wouldn't have existed in the first place if not for him, but it's not his fault the rules got broken.
-
 Gremlins is a 1984 horror-fantasy-comedy, written by Chris Columbus, executive produced by Steven Spielberg, and directed by Joe Dante. It star Zach Galligan as a young man who recieves an unorthodox Christmas gift - a new pet, in the form of a mysterious creature known as a Mogwai, which he names Gizmo. Mogwai are cute, cuddly, and intelligent little creatures, but come with three important rules for their care: keep them out of bright light, don't get them wet, and never, ever feed them after midnight. Gremlins is all about what happens when the rules get broken, and it's a scream (in more ways than one). A sequel came six years later, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, and it's even funnier. (What are they teaching kids in school these days?!) That's Gizmo, driving a Barbie doll car. And for more, try doing a Google image search for "gizmo" and see what the results look like. This should also give you an idea of how big a thing Gremlins is / was, considering that "gizmo" is also just a word. (Chris Columbus, the writer of Gremlins, also directed the first couple Harry Potter movies. It seems so weird to me that you can be a fan of the latter and not have even heard of that earlier film he wrote, especially considering it was a hit and all.)

Blondie-Wan replied to Transparency for Effect's topic in LEGO Licensed
Okay, but this is also the Licensed forum, so theoretically, only the licensed themes / franchises in the game (which make up the vast majority, granted) should be discussed in this thread, not stuff from Ninjago, Legends of Chima, or The LEGO Movie. But then, anything pertaining to licensed stuff is handled so erratically and inconsistently anyway.- 527 replies

There's nothing in the rules that says you can't promote other people's Ideas projects all you want, only your own. And even a limited amount of self-promotion is okay, as long as it falls within certain narrow constraints. Personally I think those constraints could stand a little loosening, but oh well. I'll comply with the mods' directives. And I think the OP is doing so, as well. That said, as long as this thread is here, I'd like to cite the stunning Hearthstone Bakery as a City-related Ideas project that's particularly deserving of attention, IMO. Just look at that beauty.
-
Oh, same here. I just find it noteworthy, that's all.
-
Also - first Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, and Midway Arcade, and now E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, The Goonies, and Gremlins? It's like Ernest Cline is a consulting producer on this game...
-
I assume that means there'll be some other way to get Supergirl, et al., since having to buy multiple Starter Packs in order to get all characters surely wouldn't be sweet.
-
Maybe for a typical multiplex of today, perhaps, but not for a grand, historic movie palace of the sort specifically represented by the Palace Cinema (even if the official set does have far too few seats even for the former, never mind the latter).
