LEGO Ideas Discussion
Blondie-Wan replied to The Real Indiana Jones's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I wish that rule were otherwise as well (as I'd love to see additional Ideas sets based on some of the properties that have already gotten Ideas sets), but they did make a point of saying they'd arrived at these guidelines after years of reviewing various projects and operating the program, and learning more and more over time about what they could and couldn't do with it. It's possible there's just some regularly occurring legal barrier that prevents them from doing new Ideas sets for an IP once they've already done one, and that it's bigger than the Ideas team can deal with. -

Hi! I'm a huge fan of your Ideas projects centered around vessels of discovery and exploration, and this one is no exception. I've supported and followed it. Best of luck! -

It would? Why / how? -
Well, Short Circuit does at least have an Ideas project that's made it to review (which seems to increase the chances of a franchise in general making it to LEGO Dimensions). Knight Rider has never had that, nor has The A-Team. I'm sure some of the support for the Johnny 5 project came about just because of the quality of the build, and some just because it's a cool robot design that can be appreciated even by people who've never seen the movies, but it does also give at least one indicator of Short Circuit awareness & interest that we don't have for Knight Rider or The A-Team.

It does seem peculiar that they're still allowing projects based on existing IPs that haven't had Ideas sets but not ones that have. It seems to suggest that the licensing agreements that arise via Ideas tend to have different terms from ones that don't, in ways that mark an internal distinction between the two, which seems odd. I wonder what effect this will have on the support projects get when they're based on existing IPs. Conceivably, people who submit, say, Star Wars projects might be hesitant to support other people's Star Wars projects, for fear those other projects will enter review before their own - if someone else's Star Wars project gets approved in an earlier review batch, it means their own won't even be considered. Hmm. -

Why? -
One thing I haven't seen brought up yet is the fact the Adventure Time packs are bringing us two versions of a character. There are lots of packs for which the side build (vehicle, gadget, what-have-you) is actually another character or creature, like Shelob the Great, the flying monkey, the terror dog, the velociraptor, K-9, the Dalek, and arguably even the TARDIS itself. But the Adventure Time packs are going a step further, and giving us Jake the Dog in the form of a car in the Level Pack... while the Team Pack gives us the same character, but as a playable character minifigure. Huh.

No, it's the only one we'll ever get through LEGO Ideas. There could be any number of Adventure Time sets in the future; they just won't be from LEGO Ideas. In fact, we actually already know there'll be (at least!) three different Adventure Time packs for LEGO Dimensions, so that's three sets right there. And aside from the wealth of LEGO Dimensions packs produced for this, Back to the Future, Doctor Who, etc., we've also seen other, non-LEGO Dimensions sets produced for such Ideas-originating IPs as Ghostbusters and Minecraft. As long as the LEGO Ideas Adventure Time set is a success, I think we could see further sets for the property, at least while the series is running. -

It's interesting that they have the rule now about no longer accepting projects based on IPs that have already gotten sets, and even provide a specific list with Back to the Future, Doctor Who, etc., but don't say anything about IPs that have gotten sets, but not through LEGO Ideas, like Star Wars, Marvel, DC, etc. -

Wasted how? We're getting what looks like a great set. -
There actually are in fact four other main actors who've taken on the role of Indy at other ages, but each of them covers him at a specific age or age range that doesn't overlap with the other actors' portrayals. When people talk about recasting the character, they usually seem to mean having someone around the age range of Indy in the first three movies, in that same time frame, and I have to say I don't really care for that at all. Already done, actually, though not as a movie. Granted, crystal skulls had also already been done several times before the fourth movie... He's not; George is still on as executive producer, though it's not clear whether he has any story involvement. I'm a lot more forgiving of the fourth movie than lots of others, but I acknowledge it's flawed, and the worst of the four; I don't think it's irredeemably terrible, though. Moreover, it had a long and difficult gestation, with unique circumstances that wouldn't necessarily be repeated on subsequent movies. The people I'm concerned about aren't Lucas, Ford, or Spielberg; they're Koepp and Kaminski. But both of them have done decent work as well, and I'm hopeful.

As I noted earlier, I don't think it's particularly likely, either, though it's beautiful and I supported it (and I'd love to be wrong about its chances). I actually think the Voltron one is not only the likeliest of the four projects in this batch so far, but that it's actually fairly likely, period (well, just so long as there aren't a lot of messy conditions with the rights). -
Ghostbusters (Reboot) 2016 sets rumors and discussion
Blondie-Wan replied to just2good's topic in LEGO Licensed
Theyve had two minifigure-scale versions of an AT-AT out at the same time before, and those were much larger and more expensive sets of the exact same vehicle, while these two are at least different. That said, the original could go at any time now, anyway - it's over two years old now, after all. But I think most Ghostbusters fans, even those who aren't rabidly opposed to the new movie, consider the original car the most classic and iconic. I'm sure TLG is aware of this, and probably expects to sell more of the original Ectomobile than the new one, even if the new movie is well-received. -
I certainly understand the desire not to have the forums swamped with pleas for supports for Ideas projects, but I can't help but think there's room for a little more slack than is given now... though I suppose that would be better discussed and debated in the forums devoted to forum operations. That said (and I hope you'll forgive all my questioning; I'm not trying to be disrespectful or anything, I promise), I'm wondering whether that linked thread specifically for Ideas promotion is the best place for all Ideas promotion - after all, it's in the Town forum. Granted, Bedrock fits under "town", I guess, but... (What if each of the forums devoted to specific themes had its own dedicated thread specifically for Ideas promotion?)

That still applies even if it's about someone else's Ideas project and not one's own? The wording of the rule suggested otherwise to me.

First 2016 LEGO Ideas Review - Guessing Game
Blondie-Wan replied to Robert8's topic in General LEGO Discussion
It's not just the backlog; IIRC, when they announced the first two of the four sets we're currently waiting on (the Caterham Super 7 and the Adventure Time figures), they indicated only one of the two would be out this year, and that it would be later in the year. Apparently, three of the four forthcoming sets are due next year. I've been wondering whether they'd set aside production time for a set or two from the review batch before that, but since they wound up not approving any projects from that batch, they just wound up rescheduling the production time for something else, so that the only two Ideas sets we're getting this year are the Maze and either Caterham or Adventure Time - i.e., they had resources allocated for something in between the Maze and those two, but when that one review went with nothing approved, they rescheduled the factory time they'd expected to use for a project from that review. -
If you could only keep one MOC/set, what would it be?
Blondie-Wan replied to Diesel Lover's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Ooooh, that's a brutally tough one. If I could get away with this, I'd make a "MOC" specifically for this choice, and it would be just a huge abstract hunk of brick - as many parts from as many different sets as I could, just stuck together randomly, so that I'd be keeping as many pieces as I could, which I could then take apart and use as I wanted. If I couldn't do that? I'd really have to think long and hard about it. Would it have to be a MOC or set I actually already have now, or could it be any one I've ever seen, or what? -

Both of you amaze me, but especially you, Lyichir. It would take me probably from now until the actual set release to be able to put that much of it together in LDD, even if I had a hard copy of the real instructions from which to work. Anyway, it's a very sweet set. I doubt I'll be able to get it, but I'd love to. -

First 2016 LEGO Ideas Review - Guessing Game
Blondie-Wan replied to Robert8's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I think a lot of us read it that way when the 2014 set was Santa's Workshop; that seemed like subject matter they'd save for the final set in the line. Then, last year, they released a tweaked reissue of the Winter Toy Shop, the first set in the series. Several people are under the impression they initially weren't going to release a set last year, since Santa's Workshop was apparently going to close out the theme, but that since the line had been so popular, they decided to have a sort of "encore" with a new version of the first set (and the fact it was nearly the same helped them get it out in time, since it didn't require as much development time as a whole new set - they apparently only decided to release it once they were well past the point at which they'd have had to begin work on a whole new set of they were going to do one). That said, I don't know for sure. But that was my understanding. -

Blondie-Wan replied to Robert8's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I thought the Winter Village line was over. Not all of them are licensed, and one of the ones that is (Johnny 5) is from a new license; it's also not really very large at all. The others are large, but the Fossil Museum doesn't have as high a brick count as one might think - it has fewer pieces than the Maze. -

Blondie-Wan replied to Robert8's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I actually mostly agree with that, though I do still think there could eventually be a Star Wars project approved; I just agree that it would be profoundly unlikely for anything appearing onscreen in the movies to get through. I also think both of the two Star Wars projects in this batch have particular strikes against them, apart from just being projects from an existing extensive license. Beyond that, I also fully agree the Gingerbread House is easily the likeliest of this batch to pass. The Fossil Museum should be second, if anything is; it has the fundamental appeal of the Natural History Museum from a couple reviews ago, but without all the structural overhead (walls, etc.) that made that large and brick-intensive and fit into an existing line that already has annual sets planned years in advance. By focusing on just the displays and not the museum structure around them, it makes the project both (much) more affordable and easily-produced than that other museum would have been, as well as more of its own thing instead of merely an addition to the modular building line. And the Ideas line certainly embraces science-related sets. -

It's just plain hard to attract 10,000 supports. In all the time this enterprise has been around, there have been well over 17,000 projects posted (closer to 18,000, in fact), and in all that time, from the early days of LEGO CUUSOO eight years ago right up to the present, I think there have been fewer than a hundred projects that have gotten 10,000 votes. The rate at which projects do hit that goal is picking up, but that's partly just because there are so many more submissions these days than there used to be, and it's still tough for any one project to do. It's a big accomplishment whenever one does. -
Very nice, MattGee. I'm envious.

21309 NASA Apollo Saturn V (LEGO Ideas)
Blondie-Wan replied to Blondie-Wan's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I doubt it. It's true they might speed up development of an Ideas project a little in order to hit a certain date (as with the Ghostbusters Ideas set, released in time for the movie's 30th anniversary), and we also know they can take a healthy chunk of time between announcing something and revealing and releasing it (and I wouldn't be surprised if they did that with this one, since it looks like it'll be huge, and there are also three other sets in the queue - one announced simultaneously, and two from the review before). However, the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 is presently over three years away. I don't really see them having that much time pass between announcing a set and releasing it.
