I sure hope that is a typo. The rescue team should at least be 2 people (1 chopper pilot, 1 rescuer). I'll be intereseted to see how this new helicopter would measure up with the 7738 Coast Guard Helicopter (2008), probably the best LEGO helicopter ever. I'm not encouraged by the new cockpit piece that is (tiresome argument) probably a big, single-use, and highly-specialized/junirorized part, though I'll reserve final judgement when pics come out.

LEGO Fire Trucks (from my 60002 - Fire Truck Review). Render by KielDaMan (LXF Sources: BrickWild - 7945, roamingstudio - 7239, Costy - 7208) Painstakingly took around approx. 2 days (~48 hours) to finish the render at basic settings. -

Student Enrollment: Adding Dialogue to Comics
XimenaPaulina replied to Brickington's topic in Brick Flicks & Comics
Wow, that was quite a fast revision! See how a li'l bit of tweaking of the font size and repositioning of speech balloons could do wonders? I like this revised version now, I think the larger font looks better and the two repositioned speech bubbles have effectively occupied the previous empty space. It looks much much better now IMO. I'm quite satisfied with this now, just correct the minor typo "Precous!" (missing "i") and it's all good to me and I'll pass this lesson.- 8 replies

Student Enrollment: Adding Dialogue to Comics
XimenaPaulina replied to Brickington's topic in Brick Flicks & Comics
Hi Brickington, Thank you for having the interest and taking the time to learn about adding dialogue to comics. I'll try to help you the best way I can. With regards to your work, here are my comments/questions: 1. First, highlighting the positive: it looks like you already know how to create speech balloons - you've done them neatly and cleanly. 2. I liked the font style you used for the text, perfectly suitable for a comic panel. The font size is ok as it is, though I'm curious to see how it'll look like it the font size were slightly larger (one font size higher probably?). 3. Question: Did you deliberately make Gollum's speech balloon border-less? Any reason why? 4. On speech balloon positioning: The large empty space in the upper right quarter of the panel is quite noticeable, are you intrending to put anything there or you'll leave it as is? If you'll leave it as an empty space, I think the panel would look better if you re-position Gollum's speech balloon a bit higher to occupy some of the bare space above. You could also experiment in moving the knight's speech bubble to the right side - just to try how it'll minimize the empty space on that side. The points I made are only slight revisions from what you have already made, so I assume it wouldn't take much effort on your part. It's simply "trial-and-error", so I'll wait for your responses and revised work.- 8 replies

Triple Review Special: 60001 - Fire Chief Car
XimenaPaulina replied to XimenaPaulina's topic in LEGO Town
I think the size is just about right, though I agree the tire assembly could've been better. The blue car from the 4207 City Garage actually looks nice with smaller wheels and smoother tires (below) - it would be good to see cars such as this Fire Chief Car get this properly sized wheels to differentiate with the supposedly bigger truck wheels. Pic from xtremegoogler's 4207 City Garage review With regards to the fenders, these pieces are more appropriate for larger vehicles such as trucks, but in smaller cars it does look oversized. I wish we'd get an updated modernized version of this piece which would look better in smaller cars.- 24 replies

Thank you for this highly informative article Andrew! I really appreciate all the extensive statistical research and excellent graphical presentation that went into making this write-up (I did a similar statistical reasearch before, though covering a different topic and on a much much smaller scale than this massive effort of yours, so I could realy relate on all the hardwork you've put into this ) This has really been insightful and I hope many FOLs would be able to read this so they would be better informed. Most of the time, people are quick to complain about the price of LEGO without really looking at the real picture (or are just simply lazy to be bothered to check the facts), so this study you conducted really puts into perspective the historical truth behind the pricing of LEGO. Once again, thanks for the great article and you've done the whole FOL community a huge service with this highly educational study.

Great work darwin! I knew it was just a matter of time before someone did a proper modification of these two sets so they would fit well together, and I must say you pulled it off seamlessly. By the looks of it it seems you had another Rancor Pit set (?) to expand the underground base (quite expensive mod) or you just had a rich collection of similarly colored parts? (OT: BTW, loved your PacMan avatar! Kabayan? )

We actually had an Octan petrol/gas station back in 2007: 7993 - Service Station That was one of my most favorite sets up to now, and it goes well with the similarly-themed Octan 4207 City Garage. Though I guess after 6 years it's time for another updated Octan petrol/gas station to go with this new tanker truck.

What was the last movie you watched?
XimenaPaulina replied to EbonHawk's topic in Culture & Multimedia
A couple more movies I've seen recently: Les Miserables - I'm an extremely biased huge Les Mis fan so I absolutely loved this move - despite the director's obsession with super-close ups and some singing that was decent at best but not comparable to the superb voices of theator actors I've been used to hearing. Hathaway and Jackman did great acting (and deserved their Golden Globe awards), and it had me singing at the end of the movie. District 9 - the best sci-fi movie I've seen in a long time. Refreshing to see a different depiction of aliens in our planet. -
Thanks for another informative review Rufus, it's always enjoyable reading your take on CITY sets. Most of the time, your reviews convince me to buy sets that I don't normally plan to purchase, but this time it's not the case - not really your fault, but the set itself. While I see some commendable details in this model that was not in the previous Octan Tanker, I still prefer the 2010 version for its trailer set-up (more common, and gives more truck variation vs. other single-chassis CITY trucks), the more prominent grills and more protruding bumper in front, and the fact that the driver wears the Octan uniform. I guess having a new Octan Tanker every once in a while gives others the chance to own this truck, but personally, if I had the chance to buy the 3180, I'd certainly pick it over this one. I believe this is a new 'extra giveaway' since I also got two hose-gun assembly in my 60002 Fire Truck. Kinda unusual to be a spare part considering most extras are the typical small 1x1 elements, but I guess it's a pre-emptive move just in case one of the hose-gun assembly suffers from too much wear-and-tear from kid's play.

Triple Review Special: 60000 - Fire Motorcycle
XimenaPaulina replied to XimenaPaulina's topic in LEGO Town
I may also take a crack on it considering it seems like an easy mod to do and I had an extra fire hose reel from the 60002 fire truck. Speaking of extra pieces, forgot to include this review: I'm quite surprised to see relatively many extras for such a small 40-piece impulse set (it even has more extra pieces than the bigger 60001 Fire Chief car set). And an extra tire too! I don't really remember getting extra tires from sets with motorcycles, so was I just lucky? -
Triple Review Special: 60002 - Fire Truck
XimenaPaulina replied to XimenaPaulina's topic in LEGO Town
Thanks, glad you liked the triple review. I must agree I also instantly liked this truck the first time I saw the set and it's worth every penny I've spent. (I'd even go as far to say this is the best truck for 2013, for me, even better than the new cement truck, flatbed truck, and the new tanker truck). Thanks! Actually if I had multi-storey modular buildings I would've used that to better show the length of the extendable ladder, but I guess a stack of superheroes is a good alternative. Thanks man. yeah I agree I'm sure kids would have quite the fun playing this with all the playability features - heck even I, a childlish adult, enjoyed playing 'testing' the features myself. -
Triple Review Special: 60001 - Fire Chief Car
XimenaPaulina replied to XimenaPaulina's topic in LEGO Town
No worries my friend, I actually appreciate people giving info that I overlooked. Those two indeed look like 'cars' for the Fire Chief/Commander, albeit not of the modern CITY versions. I guess I'd have to qualify my statement even better - 60001 is the first Fire Chief Car of CITY Fire subtheme (not Classic Town) - I guess that covers it up well. Thanks, like I said above I think TLG did a god job of reinventing the CITY Fire subtheme by giving us new vehicles of the CITY Fire Department - a Fire Motorcycle (60000), this Fire Chief Car (60001), a new Fire Helicopter model (60010) + the best looking (general consensus) Fire Truck we've had so far (60002) - not bad for a subtheme often maligned by AFOLs for being redundantly boring.- 24 replies

Triple Review Special: 60002 - Fire Truck
XimenaPaulina replied to XimenaPaulina's topic in LEGO Town
I remember watching Nat Geo's Mega Factories episode on LEGO, and they did show designers doing actual visits to check on places/vehicles to draw inspiration (Police HQ in that episode), so you might be right that 60002's design is more European than American. Again, my minor issue with the length is just a personal preference. I actually think the current length is ok, but could still be improved to compare well with other LEGO trucks. Thanks, that's probably the closest match to 60002 (much better comparison than the MacDill one). -
Triple Review Special: 60002 - Fire Truck
XimenaPaulina replied to XimenaPaulina's topic in LEGO Town
Out of curiosity, I tried to compare the 60002 Fire Truck with other recent CITY trucks, and my initial concern that this fire truck 'could've been longer' seems to be justified in these comparison pics: (LXF Sources: PsyKater - 60016, 60018, Sjuip - 4434, Costy - 4432) (LXF Sources: PsyKater - 60016, 60018, Sjuip - 4434, Costy - 4432) The comparison images clearly show that this fire truck is shorter than most of the other CITY trucks - which is quite disappointing since I consider fire trucks (like the reference image above) as 'monster workhorses'. So I may just have to mod it to suit my personal preference. -
Great thread! Lots of interesting insights and experiences from PFOLs. Recently just had my first child, so I still haven't dealt with this 'kid-LEGO issue' yet. It will be at least 5 years from now before Li'l KDM touches and plays with all of his daddy's LEGO, so he'll have to do with Duplo first. But still, as early as now I'm already preparing my "LEGO will" so to speak as he'll most probably inherit 90% of my collection (I'll keep a few personal favorites to me). When the that time comes, he'll have full ownership of all my LEGO so he could play with them the way he wants to (just no eating LEGO pieces - safety first!). I'll just probably guide him, help him build, but for the most part I plan to let him discover and experience himself the wonderful world of LEGO building. I guess this is always the internal guilt that most adult toy collectors experience. I, for one, do sometimes feel, that all the LEGO that I've purchased are not 'being used properly' and 'their primary purpose is being wasted' when they're just stored in display cases or boxes. Think of Toy Story and you know what I mean. But after having a kid, all the LEGO that I bought will now be able to fulfill their ultimate purpose in a few year's time - that is to provide joy to a child through play.

Wow, looks like I have a new favorite minifig customizer in EB! I've been following your custom works from your Steampunk Series to this Space Invaders, and gotta say the creativity and cleverness of your customs are truly admirable. I really like how you combine standard LEGO pieces with third-party accessories, they really make your customs unique-looking and highly-detailed. The mutant spawn is my favorite in this batch. Great stuff, your flickr page is customization gold, keep doing your thing mate!

Triple Review Special: 60001 - Fire Chief Car
XimenaPaulina replied to XimenaPaulina's topic in LEGO Town
Yep I did take a look at Brickset and indeed that is the first Fire Chief Car, but 60001 is still the only minifig-scale Fire Chief car we've had (should've qualified my statement better ). Still it's good to see this particular vehicle get a much much needed update after 30+ long years!- 24 replies

Triple Review Special: 60002 - Fire Truck
XimenaPaulina replied to XimenaPaulina's topic in LEGO Town
Thanks for the comments guys, really appreciate it. And glad to know I'm not the only who sees 60002 as probably the best among all fire trucks ever released. 1) I haven't tried it, but the feed hose can probably fit inside the storage compartment. 2) I agree the hanging equipment outside the truck (power saw, wrench, ax) are all unsafe practice in the real world. But this is understandably for better presentation of the product, as the truck would look quite bare without those equipment showing outside. At the very least, you could always store them inside the spacious equipment compartment. 3) Shovel and crowbar? I agree those would have been welcome additional equipment for this truck! Though on the bright side those two are quite common pieces so not a big deal. Thanks for the heads up. That is such an old Fire set that I completely overlooked it, though you are right that the water inlet feature isn't the first time for a LEGO fire truck. Thanks for the correction. -
Triple Review Special: 60001 - Fire Chief Car
XimenaPaulina replied to XimenaPaulina's topic in LEGO Town
Thanks for the comments guys! My memory about Fire sets are quite hazy but IIRC this is the only Fire Chief car we've had so far. Most of the past fire vehicles are fire trucks, pick-up trucks and the like, but none dedicated to the Fire Chief (I may be mistaken, so I guess it deserves a second look). LOL, you're probably right about that! Mr. Fire Chief doesn't have all day right?- 24 replies

Triple Review Special: 60000 - Fire Motorcycle
XimenaPaulina replied to XimenaPaulina's topic in LEGO Town
Yes, you are right about that. The reference image I've shown above actually has a hose reel at the back (just hidden from view by the fireman). Here's a couple of better views: Though I'm not so sure how such hose reel set-up could be squeezed in such a small space at the back of the LEGO motorcycle. Heck, they even had trouble putting a proper attachment on the fire extinguisher on the side!
