  14. Kintobor's response is the most concrete. There may often be overlap and it sometimes comes down to how you want to describe your character. Sometimes it is a bit of a convincing of a MM that your proficiency is relevant through your description of how you use a skill, but that's the beauty of an role-playing with other real people. Unlike a computer game where there are binary rules, role-playing allows you to try and convince someone that your strategy is relevant. There are still limits, i.e. you may not be able to use Religion to get a door to unlock, but you could approach unlocking a door with a number of different proficiencies, ranging from Athletics (break the door), to Sleight-of-hand (pick the lock), to Engineering (take the hinges off), to Deception (convince someone on the other side you have a package to deliver). The "Try Anything" is an action that I've enjoyed watching people use and it'll be interesting to see how folks find unique uses for their specializations. But yes, the Rally/Defend actions are meant to give people options beyond the simple "I attack".

  17. MM Note: I'll reply to your in character responses in a little bit, but the tank is not a target, it doesn't have stats. Similar to when you try to break a door down or break a lock, you're using skills not making an attack. In this particular instance it'll still use your weapon proficiency skill, but it won't be an attack.
  18. MM Note: To be clear, this wouldn't be an Attack action, this would be a "Try Something" action and thus unimpacted by the Rally action.

Shooting at the tank to detonate it in one direction as opposed to a detonation that hits potentially enemies and allies will be a more difficult challenge. (i.e. DC 1 vs. DC 3). Additionally while an explosion will do damage, it won't be an instant KO.
  20. This is somewhat player dependent. A player's stats are completely customizable between missions, so if you want to play one mission as a heavy melee and the next as a long range casting wizard, you're allowed to. Some players will probably desire for their character to have motivation to change things drastically for internal role-play consistency reasons and may never change their core stats. Others may see it as a way to show that some skills just haven't been practiced in a while and have lapsed while new skills have been developed. It really comes down to how you want to play your character.
  21. Currently RAW (rules as written) the Spell only specifies that the target needs to be attacked, RAI (rules as intended) the Spell should specify someone to have rolled a Successful attack.

  23. Mechanics wise at early levels auto-successes have a much bigger impact than proficiency bonus. Zaria statistics to hit look like this (50%, 50%, +100%), Yelana's on the other hand (50%, 100%, 100%) so at this point she'll hit more consistently. Combine this with Yelana's superior range (Artillery vs. Melee) and she is probably the bigger threat to enemies. I know you're still new to role-playing games, so something to consider for future missions (and this applies to everyone) is to look at what your party members statistics are before leaving on the Mission and prepare accordingly. The rules allow for characters to be super flexible. Know you're going to a dark planet, prepare a light spell; know that the party doesn't have someone with healing, consider picking up extra plasma potions or a healing spell for yourself; know that things are going to require a lot of sneaking, consider swapping an athletics proficiency for a stealth proficiency. Party members are a team, it's your job to work together as that as you either all succeed together or all fail together (most of the time).
  24. Correct, the caster will have a +5 armor bonus against the next attack. If the target is attacked multiple times in a round, it only works against the first one.
